    With the coming of Android 3.1 you finally have the option of using the device as a USB host. This may be through a USB OTG (On-the-Go) adaptor, but nonetheless it’s a feature which was sorely missed until now. [Manuel] put together a guide on using Android as a USB host. As you can see, his example hardware is an Arduino board but this is applicable with just about any device.
    The tutorial implements a test app for the Android device where a slider will set the brightness of the Arduino’s on-board LED. The Arduino sketch is nothing special, it just reads data received on the UART. This means that it doesn’t care if it’s connected to an Android, PC, OSX, or Linux system, it goes about its business until the RX interrupt updates the data variable.
    This will greatly simplify a lot of projects we’ve seen, such as this message scrolling belt buckle. That used extra hardware to make the Arduino the host, a step that is now necessary.

    Speaking a few days before this morning’s official launch of the PlayStation Vita, Sony’s American boss Jack Tretton has said that early Sony sales data is “very, very positive”.
    “Memory is going out the door very aggressively despite the fact that memory is in a lot of the presale bundles,” he told IGN. “The software appears to be selling quite well top to bottom.
    “I’ve been involved in every platform launch we’ve ever had back to 1995, so I have the history to fall back on, and in terms of the press that we’ve gotten for Vita, in terms of the way we’ve been able to deliver the message and in terms of merchandising at retail and getting the hardware and software in people’s hands, I think this is probably our most successful lead up to a launch platform.
    “Now that the holidays are behind us and the marketing campaign is kicking in and the merchandising is appearing at retail and we’ve got our promotional campaign kicking in, I feel great about the velocity that we have going into Vita, and I’d say that we’re best positioned of any platform launch that I’ve been a part of in terms of positive momentum and positive feedback relative to it.”
    Tretton also slammed those who have dubbed the machine’s arrival in Japan as a failure.
    “Quite frankly, it scares me if people think that the Japanese launch is struggling. The fact is they sold 500,000 units in three weeks,” he added.
    “I would be pleased if we did 500,000 units in the first three weeks here in the United States. I think that’s a real healthy number for a new platform launch.”

    PS3 owners who purchase Mass Effect 3 early via PSN will receive an extra theme not available elsewhere.
    Consumers will be able to pre-order a downloadable copy of the game through PSN online, claims the US PlayStation Blog.
    Those who do will receive an in-game M55 Argus rifle and Mass Effect 3 PS3 theme, the latter of which is exclusive to the platform.
    Pre-order bonuses for Mass Effect 3 at retail include N7 Warfare Gear, which is exclusive to GAME, and includes a Valkyrie rifle, defender armour, increased ammo capacity and ‘amplified’ weapon damage. The standard pre-order extra, available with most retailers, is the aforementioned M55 Argus rifle.
    Gamers who pre-order Mass Effect 3 through EA’s digital download platform Origin will receive an AT-12 Raider Shotgun.
    Mass Effect 3 hits UK shelves on March 9th for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

    The UK MD of Sony has admitted that Sony should have made higher capacity Vita memory cards available in Europe at launch.
    On the High Street right now the 16GB SKUs are already becoming hard to track down, leaving gamers to choose between the 4GB and 8GB versions.
    Some overseas retailers are offering the 32GB SKU, though costs are upwards of £70 per unit. It’s not yet known when the 32GB card will be released in Europe.
    “We've already learnt from the early days in Japan that we probably haven't got big enough memory cards introduced for the UK market,” Fergal Gara told Eurogamer. “We've already gone to secure bigger size cards to bring them into the UK market.
    “Before it comes to market you just have to guess what people are going to want. We thought they'd want a lot of 4GB cards just as the minimum, and then they buy packaged media. But actually, the way it's going is, many of the early adopters are clearly going to download a bit more, or just want to buy the big chip in case.
    “It's going to evolve. But we can certainly see they want bigger cards.”
    Vita games are not particularly small in size, either. The biggest release so far seems to be FIFA Football, which weighs in at over 2.8GB. Even smaller games like Super Stardust are in excess of 600MB in size, meaning memory cards are filling up very quickly.
    UPDATE: As pointed out by an MCV reader, Uncharted: Golden Abyss is around 3.4GB in size to download.

    Ubisoft’s colourful platformer Rayman Origins has emerged as the critics’ favourite of the PlayStation Vita launch range.
    The game currently carries an average review score of 89 per cent on Metacritic. It has been praised for the quality of its visuals, which are said to be an ideal match with Vita’s fantastic OLED touch screen.
    Ubisoft has also laid claim to the second highest rated game – puzzle title Lumines: Electronic Symphony (85 per cent).
    This is followed by PQube BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extended (83 per cent), Sony’s Super Stardust Delta (83 per cent) and Uncharted: Golden Abyss (80 per cent).
    Other highly rated games include Capcom’s Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (79 per cent), Sony’s Wipeout 2048 (79 per cent), EA’s FIFA Football (77 per cent) and Sony’s Escape Plan (76 per cent).

    Q2 2012: BRINGING THE PAYNE

    Q3 2012: THE SUMMER DROUGHT
    It’s looking like another quiet summer again this year. But that’s not to say there are no potential hits heading to shelves. Far from it.
    Instead, retailers can look forward to the arrival of Warner Bros’ LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes. Not only is this the sequel to the biggest-selling LEGO game of all time, it also coincides rather conveniently with the silver screen debut of hotly anticipated Caped Crusader flick The Dark Knight Rises.
    Speaking of which, there is a stellar line-up of summer movie blockbusters that will almost certainly have video game adaptations, including Marvel’s The Avengers, Pixar’s Brave and Dreamworks’ Madagascar 3. Expect these to tempt movie buffs into stores throughout the summer.
    Plus, there’s the not insignificant event of the London 2012 Olympics. As well as a new Olympics title from Sega, last year’s Mario & Sonic title stands to benefit from a second wave of sales.
    As September arrives, the High Street can depend on unannounced but inevitable follow-ups to some of the industry’s annual surefire hits, such as EA’s FIFA 13.
    Other safe bets include Codemasters’ F1 2012 – until then racing fans can enjoy next week’s F1 2011 on Vita.

    Having released Battlefield 3 on the Apple App Store earlier this month, EA has now pulled the game from sale.
    IGN reports that the decision was made after an influx of negative reviews regarding both its controls and its network stability. The game is free to play thanks to sponsorship from Act of Valor, but included only one map and four weapons.
    At the time of removal the game had a 2.5 star user rating on the App Store.
    "EA Mobile is committed to delivering mobile entertainment experiences that are on par with the content and quality users have come to expect from their favorite EA gaming brands,” a statement from the publisher reads.
    “To this end, we have decided to remove Battlefield 3: Aftershock from the App Store and are currently re-evaluating the app in response to the consumer feedback we've received. We thank all the fans who have downloaded the game to date."
    An expanded and improved version of the game will be released later this year.

    GAME will close Gameplay.co.uk next week, MCV can reveal.
    All that website's customers will now be served via Gamestation.co.uk as of March 1st.
    The move makes sense for GAME. It acquired Gameplay back in 2004 but since then it has become a forgotten brand at the retail specialist. The site was also not updated when GAME and Gamestation relaunched its websites last year.
    Meanwhile, GAME has also informed a further 35 stores that they will be closed. It is part of the store closures already announced by the firm. There are currently 610 GAME and GameStation High Street stores and this will be reduced to 550 outlets by Christmas 2013.
    The company says it has a 'detailed plan to help customers move to another local store or online' and says it will do its best to redeploy its staff if possible.
    "So that all of our customers can enjoy the benefits of the new online platform that we launched last year, Gameplay customers will be served through Gamestation.co.uk from March 1st 2012, including customer support for their purchases," said a GAME spokesperson
    "All new orders will be directed through gamestation.co.uk from that date. We’re talking to our customers who access our online community through Gameplay about this today, and look forward to welcoming them to the growing community at gamestation.co.uk."
    But it's not all bad news for GAME Group. The firm will finally upgrade its in-store IT systems next month. The new system fully connects their online platform with the stores. That means click and collect should be on the way. More information will be available next month.
    The news comes a year after the firm announced its 'Dedicated to Gaming' strategy. The company's strategy is to grow its multi-channel and digital offerings, whilst reduce its store count.
    The news follows troubled times at GAME Group, which has suffered severe credit issues following a disappointing Christmas. The Group has secured a reduced banking facility to help it trade through the coming weeks. However, some games are still absent from store shelves.

    Specialist retailer GAME has said that it's unable to stock all new releases, in part due to shelf space in stores.
    Yesterday it was revealed that the retailer would not be stocking any of Ubisoft's PlayStation Vita games at launch, and it also cancelled pre-orders for the Special Edition of Wii game The Last Story days before release.
    The company is negotiation releases on a case-by-case basis with games publishers, following a troubled year in which it expects to make an £18 million loss.
    But GAME's marketing director Anna-Marie Mason told our sister site Eurogamer.net that "there's no one specific catch-all reason" why the retailer isn't able to offer new releases to customers.
    "With regards to the Ubisoft titles, that is one moment in time. It doesn't mean to say we won't have that title or that part of our proposition on an on-going basis.
    "We can't stock absolutely everything. That's just not possible."
    "The same applies in a rational way to our online business," she added. "There isn't a definitive reason why we haven't been able to stock those two things most recently. But that may well change."
    Last week the store did not have copies of Namco's Tekken 3D Prime Edition, meaning it was not available on sale at over 350 UK stores. The game did not chart in the official UK sales charts as a result.
    Mason also said that consumers who place pre-orders shouldn't lose faith in the retailer, as recent situations are exceptions and not an indication of forthcoming problems with other titles.
    "We know our customers really well. Most of them have a really long history with us, and they know as a business we are absolutely committed to giving the best possible range as much of the time as we possibly can.
    "The instances we've had in the last couple of weeks are absolutely the exception, not the rule."

    Sony's new handheld, PS Vita, has launched in North America and Europe.
    First in line at Game's flagship store on London's Oxford Street was Zohaib Ali, 21, who had been waiting outside the store since Sunday.
    "No sleep," he told VG247. "Tonight I'm just going to play Vita all night. I've stayed awake all night. I've already played it - it's really good! I love games, I love technology - I just want my Vita."
