Paramount Pictures will set a milestone on October 30, simultaneously releasing Mission: Impossible III on HD DVD, Blu-ray and DVD. The HD DVD and Blu-ray versions will be in 1080p resolution with 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus surround sound. Analysts are saying we should expect to see the other studios following suit, launching new titles in every imaginable format. Of course, Universal will be missing out on all the fun, at least for now, since it's the only studio that's not shipping Blu-ray titles.

The big news will be when one disc player will be able to play all three releases, or when there is a DVD-compliant copy of the movie on one side of a disc, and an HD DVD or Blu-ray version on the other side. Meanwhile, the release of Blu-ray and HD DVD players and content figuratively mosey out onto the world stage to the sound of one hand clapping. ...

Nintendo Wii and DS games could soon feature an intriguing voice-recognition system that can read and analyse your speech.

Analysed text can be displayed as text on other players' consoles during multiplayer games with the tone of your voice altering the colour, size and font of the text, according to a US patent held by Nintendo.

As you speak, the system picks up on your voice pattern - shout "I WIN!" and it will appear in big red capital letters; whisper and it'll be much smaller and in a more subdued colour. The patent, issued in February, has surfaced after an IGN forumite claimed to know of Nintendo's plans to use a system called 'voice-to-text communication' in its games.

It's unclear whether these plans are primarily for Wii games, but the forum poster also claims that "some peripherals for DS will be compatible with Wii and vice versa," suggesting good compatibility between the two consoles. ...

Utada Hikaru, the Japanese pop star best known to gamers for her songs from the Kingdom Hearts franchise, trumped 26 of 30 Tetris challengers in a Nintendo-sponsored event over the weekend in Japan.

    J-pop chanteuse Utada Hikaru.
Nintendo hosted an event called The Tetris Battle at the Tokyo International Forum on Saturday, according to Japanese Web site ITmedia. Members of the Club Nintendo fan club who won a Nintendo promotional contest each challenged the Japanese pop icon in a round of Tetris DS.

Utada--a self-proclaimed Tetris aficionado since the age of 5--lost her first two games, but she rebounded, winning 26 of her next 28 bouts. She also defeated a Nintendo developer in an exhibition match. The 23-year-old singer blamed the unfamiliar Nintendo DS system she used at the event for her slow start. Before her winning streak began, a shocked Utada reportedly exclaimed, "Are you serious?... This is impossible!"

Besides Tetris, Utada has other ties to video games. She contributed the single "Easy Breezy" for the first Nintendo DS advertising campaign in Japan and sang the theme songs "Simple and Clean" and "Passion" for Square Enix's action role-players Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, respectively. ...

Publishers like Capcom, Sega, Midway, Taito, and Namco have been offering retro-themed compilations for years on a variety of platforms. However, the biggest third-party publisher of them all, Electronic Arts, has generally shied away from the practice, other than a few offerings such as the recent Command & Conquer: The First Decade collection.

That might be changing, if a new GameStop product listing is accurate. According to the retailer, Electronic Arts is jumping into the retro trend headfirst with EA Replay for the PSP. Slated for release October 3 with a price tag of $29.99, the compilation will let players relive 14 of the publisher's back-catalog offerings, including fondly remembered hits like Syndicate, Ultima VII: The Black Gate, Road Rash, Wing Commander, and Jungle Strike. Some of the games will support head-to-head multiplayer action, all will be playable in widescreen or normal views, and all of them will allow players to save their games at any time. The site even says it will include unlockable game art.

The full list of games listed for the compilation is included below, along with their first release dates and systems. Given the difficulties inherent in porting a keyboard-and-mouse control scheme to PSP, it is likely that the compilation would feature shrunken-down versions of the games' console versions, so those are the dates and systems given below.

    B.O.B.--1993--SNES and Genesis
    Budokan--1990--Genesis
    Desert Strike--1993--SNES and Genesis
    Jungle Strike--1993--SNES and Genesis
    Haunting Starring Polterguy--1993--Genesis
    Mutant League Football--1993--Genesis
    Road Rash--1992--Genesis, later on 3DO
    Road Rash II--1993--Genesis
    Road Rash III--1995--Genesis
    Syndicate--1995--SNES, 3DO, Jaguar
    Ultima: The Black Gate--1994--SNES
    Virtual Pinball--1993--Genesis
    Wing Commander--1993--SNES
    Wing Commander: The Secret Missions--1993--SNES

The Retail Radar picked up on a listing for an Electronic Arts retro compilation earlier today, but there are a few more incoming bogies to mention, with plenty of activity on the PSP front, and some news for owners of other systems as well.

First off, GameStop has a couple new listings for previously unheard of versions of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas. Only the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game have been announced officially, but it looks like Ubisoft hasn't forgotten the current gen consoles or portable gamers just yet, as GameStop is also soliciting pre-orders for PSP and PlayStation 2 editions of the game.

Product pages have also sprung up on GameStop for a couple more unannounced PSP games. Later this year, the retailer expects to receive shipments of M.A.C.H. from Vivendi Games, and Rocky 6 from Ubisoft. There's very little information on the site about either M.A.C.H. (which shares the name of an obscure Commodore 64 action game) or Rocky 6 (presumably based on the upcoming sequel to the big-screen boxing franchise).

In other PSP blips, Namco Bandai's Warhammer WarCry card battling game apparently has a subtitle now, as GameStop is calling it "Warhammer WaCry [sic]: Battle for Atluma." According to the product page, the game will feature more than 450 cards to collect, wireless multiplayer, the ability to build a custom deck from more than 90 different units, and a thorough tutorial mode.

Also, GameStop isn't expecting the PSP to see Gran Turismo arrive on the portable until 2007. The game's last official release projection date was simply 2006, although that was only announced for Japan. In 2004, Gran Turismo 4 Mobile was among the first wave of games announced for the portable, but it hasn't caused much of a stir since, being noticeably absent from the last two Electronic Entertainment Expos. ...

    News from Gamesindustry

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, industry veteran Ian Livingstone has said that although Sony has been the clear victor in past console battles, the race will be much harder to win this time around.

In an exclusive interview, Livingstone said: "It's going to be a much closer race and significantly, I think Nintendo, with the Wii console, is going to be right back up in the thick of it.

"Sony has had a recent history of being the clear winner, and I don't think anybody believes that's going to be the case this time... It's going to be a much closer race."

According to Livingstone, Sony will have to allocate a hefty marketing budget to communicate the value of the PlayStation 3, and "let consumers know that the PS3 is not just a games machine but a complete home entertainment system with Blu-ray.

"To get the consumers to understand exactly what that means, and how that justifies the cost of the hardware - that's going to be the challenge for them."

Livingstone, who is currently product acquisition director at Eidos, confirmed that the publisher will be supporting all three next-gen consoles, stating: "It's much more of an open race and it's a very exciting time for independent publishers like ourselves, to be able to successfully leverage our IP over more formats than before."

US games designer American McGee has lavished praise on Nintendo's innovative next-gen console strategy, labelling the PS3 and Xbox 360 as "just a video card and processor update."

Speaking to commercial website Computerandvideogames.com in an interview yet to be published in full, the industry veteran laid out his forthright views on the next-gen battle.

"I sense that Nintendo is going to capture the hearts of gamers while Microsoft and Sony stab each other in the neck for market domination," McGee stated.

"Nintendo is focused on innovation and games," he added. "The other guys are focused on making money."

It's McGee's assertion that the focus on high definition, cinematic graphics and the touting of immense technical processing power will be detrimental to both Sony and Microsoft's grip on the games market.

While the two firms fight for market share, McGee believes Nintendo's cheaper, gameplay-centric and highly innovative approach taken with the Wii console will capture consumer interest on a much wider scale.

"The only true next-gen console out there is the Wii. Everything else is just a video card and processor upgrade," McGee concluded.

His comments echo the industry's general reception to the Wii, with suggestions of a much stronger market position for Nintendo coming from many highly placed industry professionals.

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Eidos' product acquisition director, Ian Livingstone stated his belief in a much closer race for the next-generation of hardware, stating:

"I think Nintendo, with the Wii console, is going to be right back up in the thick of it. they've gone for gameplay over graphics instead. I think that's quite an interesting move and it could be very successful for them." ...

There's no movement in the top three this week, as THQ's multi-format cartoon racer continues its winning streak - while GTA: Liberty City Stories and New Super Mario Bros stall in second and third.

Marking its third week at the top, Cars continues to cling to the racing line and stay ahead of the pack, despite a 17 per cent drop in sales. Outside of the top three however, some old favourites are making a valiant and, in some cases, meteoric rise back up to the top of the charts.

The Sims (Original) is making the most of its retail promotions, climbing from sixth to fourth place, pushing poor old Dr Kawashima's Brain Training down one place into fifth position.

Sixth place goes to sibling The Sims 2, whilst other iterations of the popular people management game are creeping back into the charts further down. The Sims: Unleashed re-enters the chart at number 30, and The Sims: Superstar climbs six places to 31, leaving The Sims: On Holiday and The Sims: Makin' Magic to re-emerge at number 37 and 38 respectively.

Back in the higher end of the charts, Konami keeps up training for the new football season with Pro Evolution Soccer 5 in seventh place - followed by a top ten re-entry for EA's Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which climbs from 14 to this week's number 8.

Disney gets swallowed by the currents with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest at number 9, and Activision continues to dodge traffic at number 10 with film franchise Over The Hedge.

THQ's Monster House marks the only noticeable new entry this week, coming in at number 18 ahead of the movie's weekend release, which should help push the title further up the charts next week - potentially overtaking Cars for the all-formats lead.
