    News from Arstechnica

As we reported yesterday , E3 is alive and kicking, just in a much reduced and more efficient form. Next year's E3 will still be in LA, but will consist of many small press events and more "intimate meetings" between the press and developers instead of the monster show floor of years past.

In a press release, ESA President Doug Lowenstein said that "it has become clear that we need a more intimate program, including higher quality, more personal dialogue with the worldwide media, developers, retailers, and other key industry audiences...It is no longer necessary or efficient to have a single industry 'mega-show."

Downsizing makes a lot of sense. Many small shows that let press see and play games without having to deal with the crush of people all trying to get to the same place makes a lot more sense, and it should put the emphasis back on the games themselves, not huge video screens or live bands. ...

Nintendo's portable just keeps getting stranger. Already heralded as an educational pet simulator, brain trainer and a Japanese-English dictionary, the DS is about earn a new title: interactive cookbook. Chris Kohler of Game|Life takes a look at Shaberu! DS O-Ryouri Navi (translation: Talk! DS Cuisine Navigator), a DS title that features over 200 recipes that are broken down to many steps and read aloud to you by the narrator. You can bark voice commands at your DS, such as "next page" and "more detail" for even simpler instructions.

Like all bizarre DS titles, the cookbook was a hit in Japan, selling more than 120,000 copies in its first week available. Kohler continues, comparing last week's Japanese hardware sales of the DS and Sony PSP (hint: Nintendo's portable outsold Sony's more than seven times over). Is this popularity due to Nintendo's ability to capture nearly every demographic in Japan?

Kohler's final point highlights the Long Tail theory developed by Wired magazine editor in chief Chris Anderson, which proposes that the combined sales of of many lesser-known products from a company account for more revenue than the sales of its most popular products. Here, Kohler's quick calculations show that nine titles like Shaberu! DS O-Ryouri Navi would equal the sales of New Super Mario Bros. and likely would cost less time and money on development. The discussion leads up to a comparison of Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console to Xbox Live Arcade. Nintendo is offering their entire back catalogue as is, while XBLM sells only the highest-quality products, hand-picked and sometimes seldom released. From the perspective of a consumer, who really has the most advantageous online structure here? ...

    News via Gamespot

Another proposed bill to restrict the rental or sale of games to minors has been stricken down today. US Chief District Judge James M. Rosenbaum upheld a suit filed by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) to block a Minnesota law today, deeming it unconstitutional.

In May, Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty signed into law a bill that would fine minors $25 for purchasing or renting games rated M for Mature or AO for Adults Only and required retailers to post appropriate signage detailing the law in stores, much like alcohol warnings in liquor stores. The law was scheduled to go into effect tomorrow until today's ruling shot it down.

Like other game laws that were blocked before it, Judge Rosenbaum said the Minnesota law invalidly violates the First Amendment, which protects games as a form of free speech.

The state argued that the law would protect "the psychological well-being of minors" and foster "children's moral and ethical development." However, the judge's decision stated that the state failed to provide "empirical support for its belief that 'violent' video games cause psychological harm to minors."

    slaanesh posted this news:

Sorry - I've run a little behind but I will release *this* week:

    Summary of what's new:

Sample support. MAME 0.34 uses .sam format - I've collected all these samples and I will release a companion file containing these.

New module - Sega System 16 game support. Altered Beast, Alien Syndrome and Shinobi are the highlights here. Golden Axe would work but doesn't fit in the 8MB RAM. Bummer!

Latest version of Cyclone 68K core.

Improvements to sound subsystem. Additional option to play in 11025 mode instead of 22050 - gains a couple FPS doing so with reduction in sound quality. I also plan some further improvements here like triple buffering.

CPU cores recompile with gcc -O1 flag instead of -O3. This improves sound quality considerably and many games are very clear (again). As a result, some games will be a little slower, however improvements in other areas have made up for this to a degree. Generally, if a game was previously fast enough to play with sound, then there isn't a problem.

The usual slew of other fixes. More details in the whatsnew.txt in the release.

Optimized graphics subsystem (from GP2X/MAME4ALL version, thanks Franxis and Chui).

I'm considering removing support for the "fast" version set of modules as they aren't really that compatible. If someone could create a list of games which fully work with DrZ80 I will create a few seperate modules for those games.
For example, the new Sega System 16 only uses 68K and Z80 cpus. Seeing as Cyclone and DrZ80 are both available, that would make a perfect pure assembler core module. However, in reality whilst this does work and I get around 18-23FPS with sound, the game will always crash when exiting (which is annoying). This seems to happen with the GP2X version too. :-(
There are only a handful of Z80 games that I know work with DrZ80. If Galaga was one of these I'd be very happy, but it isn't. Sure it works, but not with sound :-( Whenever there are multiple CPUs or multiple Z80s involved there seems to be less chance of compatibility.

The other option is to use the -O3 cpu cores for the 'fast' modules. Tell me what you think!

Anyway! Enough! Release later this week!

    New from SuccessHK

An exclusive PSP edition of Capcom's legendary platforming game, directed by the original's creator Tokurou Fujiwara. The game makes use of a 3D graphics engine, giving depth to the visuals, but plays in a side-scrolling perspective and similar art design to stay true to the original. Your goal is to work your way through side-scrolling stages, defeating enemies and using your best platforming skills. The game lets you build up your skills as you progress. You start off with just a basic jump, but eventually gain a double jump and even the ability to fly. You'll also earn lots of magic spells along the way. The game promises a greater number of spells and weapons than ever before. New for Goku Makaimura is non-linear gameplay. You're no longer on a fixed path from start to end. The levels include branching points and even warp points. By using a warp point, you can warp back to previous levels and collecting items that you might have missed.
