Ubisoft sees a bright future for the next gen over in the US, with the company predicting that next-gen systems will fly off the shelves over the next couple of years and its market forecast for 2008 saying that nearly 40 million consoles will be shifted in the US during that year.

However, speaking to financial site Bloomberg, company president Yves Guillemot predicted that, while demand for the PS3 in the US this year will be exceptionally high due to gamers' expectations, Sony should rapidly drop its PS3 price in 2007 if it intends to win the fight against Microsoft.

It's certainly a fair point and, after riding the rush of initial adopters, Sony will almost certainly have to adjust its pricing policy on the next-gen machine if it wants to reach the massive audience it did with PS2 and remain competitive against the 360. Guillemot's comments also add weight to Bill Gates' argument that 2007 will be the crucial year when the next-gen battle is decided.

Still, it seems things are looking up for the Ubis, with several major series like Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia under its belt and a raft of new titles like Assassin's Creed and Red Steel exciting interest across next-gen formats. Ubisoft isn't done either, with Guillemot saying that it was quite probable the company would add to its portfolio by acquiring new franchises and studios along the way as it shapes up for more next-gen goodness.

Red Steel is one Wii title we're really, really looking forward to, because any game which allows you to swing a virtual sword in anger fulfils our long standing dream of engaging in epic sword battles from the comfort of our own living room (but not in any uncool Star Wars kid kind of way you'll understand).

Ahem anyway, Ubi's developers have just started up a blog and the first entry from producer Marie-Sol Beaudry from its Paris studio, details how it will be implementing that crucial sword fighting mechanic with the wonderful Wiimote.

Beaudry begins by saying the game's sword fighting proved a real challenge, but, "We quickly learned that wielding a sword and manipulating the controller was a lot of fun, but we didn't want to force people to become actual professional swordsmen - just have fun.

"Also, we have to consider the animations of the sword and matching it up with what you see on screen. We didn't want any delay whatsoever in response to what was happening with the controller and what you saw on the screen. "

However, Beaudry also acknowledged how important the controller is to anyone making games for the Wii and how it informs pretty much every design decision: "Everything we're doing in the game is directly effected by the controller. This includes everything from level design, overall game design, movement and storyline."

Beaudry teased with one last info nugget too, saying there are a couple of surprises in store for Red Steel players, finishing with the cryptic, "Also the sword fighting is going to offer more diversity in movements and couple of special moves I will not talk about this time."

Zodttd just released his Playstation emulator for the GP2X, heres the info:

    psx4gp2x Public Beta 2, a Playstation 1 emulator for the GP2X.
psx4gp2x is based on psx4all. Both psx4gp2x and psx4all is original code by Unai, ZodTTD, Chui, and Tinnus.

    New in Beta 2:
    - Many improvements to the GPU's rendering engine. Many games should render correctly completely.
    - The GPU has been optimized many times over.
    - The C interpreter has been greatly improved and is currently driving the CPU emulation until the dynarec that is in progress is completed.
    - A huge bug fix that increased the compatibility of psx4gp2x greatly. Many more games can now be played.
    - Less need for "underclocking" the PSX CPU clockspeed. It is now done automatically within the interpreter. This is a performance gain seen in many games.
    - A new menu system. Less button usage and easier to handle.
    - Now uses the MMU patch by Squidge to optimize the framebuffer. This increased the framerate of games by about 2 FPS.

    - More accurate FPS counter with more information available in the menu.
    - Removed the GP2X scaling mode.
    - Improved the progressive interlacing mode for a better image. For a perfect image in games, turn off progressive in the Graphics Options.
    - Sound is currently still disabled for this release. It is working but drains performance too much to be feasible at this point.

    Special control configurations for psx4gp2x:
    L2 Trigger = GP2X's PUSH-STICK + L Trigger
    R2 Trigger = GP2X's PUSH-STICK + R Trigger
    psx2gp2x in-game menu = GP2X's PUSH-STICK + SELECT
    psx4gp2x PSX CPU underclock method = GP2X's PUSH-STICK + VOLUME DOWN/UP
    EXIT GAME = GP2X'S L Trigger + R Trigger + A + B + X + Y

    How in install:
    1. Once the psx4gp2x package is unzipped, place the case-sensitive file named scph1001.bin (or other bios versions renamed to this) in the "psx4gp2x" directory that contains "psx4all.gpe".
    2. Copy the psx4gp2x directory to your SD card.
    3. Move games to anywhere on your SD card.
    4. Run psx4all.gpe.

    GodatHell posted this:

Over the last days i updated the tweaker a little bit. Now the GUI is entirely rewritten and a whole bunch of new features are included. For more information check the ReadMe which is a little bit blown up (364 lines ^^).

    What's new:
    ===========
    CPU/LCD/RAM Tuner 2.0
    ---------------------
    - complete new menu
    - RAM-Tuning Options
    - Saveoption for Configfiles
    - complete new commandline-options
    - no SDL anymore
    - CPU-Tester

The RAM-Tuning can speed up the whole RAM-performance a bit. With a bit stricter timings i gained a overal performance plus of 4-5% in Quake. this isn't much, but you have to remind, that Quake is no havy RAM user ... with applications like GnGeo you should experience a noticable speedup .

The GUI now looks like an AWARD-Bios and let's you save your configurations. Another big plus is, that you can use the program WITHOUT using scripts. The commandline is better than before, but you can the new configfile for filestarting too. Just add a run-parameter and the program in the config-file and the tweaker will set the parameters and run the application after that .

    News from Gamespot

Last week was light on new releases, but one new high-profile game was put to the test. Electronic Arts' NFL Head Coach made its series debut on June 20 and is one of the first big-name sports strategy titles aimed at the American market.

For a football-starved country that devours EA's main pigskin franchise by the millions, sales prospects for NFL Head Coach were uncertain, as it focuses exclusively on coaching and management instead of Madden's on-the-field action. The game didn't quite get the Gatorade shower EA had hoped, but the PlayStation 2 version of the game landed in a respectable third place.

With the launch of the Nintendo DS Lite in the US earlier in the month, the dynamic DS duo of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day and New Super Mario Bros. swapped spots and landed in first and second, respectively. The highly rated Mario Kart DS kept its wheels turning in the top 10, power sliding into ninth, down two spots.

Football in the top 10 wasn't limited to the American variety--a flurry of FIFA soccer titles were also kickin' onto the list. Available now for $29.99, 2006 FIFA World Cup for the Xbox (fourth) and PlayStation 2 (fifth), as well as FIFA 06 for the Xbox (eighth), were helped along by surging interest in "The Beautiful Game."

The rest of the top-10 slots were older, budget-priced Xbox games. Star Wars: Battlefront II led the pack in the sixth slot, followed by Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse at seven and Ninja Gaiden Black at 10.

Noticeably missing from the list were any Xbox 360 games, thanks to a month that has so far seen only one new next-gen release (MotoGP 06 on June 16--Over G Fighters flew into stores today). ...

For 10 years the Metal Slug series has provided us with 'hard as nails' challenges, gained an ever growing cult following, and done it all in old school 2D. After a decade however SNK Playmore decided to try a 3D edition on the PS2, and from the moment it was announced fans will have been split between either loving or loathing it, all without playing it of course. Famitsu on the other hand have played it, and their very respectable review of 28/40 was the highest a Metal Slug title has received in a long time, meaning if you can get over the change, fans will indeed be rewarded. Those who do can take five playable characters and battle through ground air and sea. As you progress you'll earn skill points which beef up your characters firepower, accuracy and such, but much more exciting is the fact using parts you salvage from the battlefield, you can customize your vehicle, or if you have enough, create an entirely new one!

There's a training mode to help noobs saddle up for the front lines, plus a radar and both manual and auto lock-on aiming modes to help you adjust to the added dimension. Thankfully it also takes more than one hit to knock you down here, but the better you play, the more medals you'll earn and have to look back on with honor later. Then after completing single player mode there's a movie player and jukebox to unlock, the ability to adjust character's colors, plus a mini-game where you must escape the Rebellion Army as a prisoner of war within a time limit. Available now, give Metal Slug 3D a try, or if you're firmly sticking to the 2D titles, pre-orders are being taken now for Metal Slug 6 due on 27th of next month! ...

Amazon's UK arm is asserting that both the higher-spec 60Gb and lower spec 20Gb versions of PS3 will launch on these shores, grinding an unofficial boot into doubts that the less expensive of the PS3 packs wouldn't release in old Blighty.

A question mark was raised over UK release plans for the 20Gb PS3 back in May, when Sony chief Ray Maguire spoke about the next-gen console in an interview with trade mag MCV. "The lower-end 20Gb version of PlayStation 3 has no wi-fi, no HDMI and none of the other slots in it, so it's really a question of where we would position it," Maguire said at the time, opining, "It's more likely that we will only launch the 60Gb version."

According to Amazon though, the 20Gb 'standard' version of PS3 will release in the UK on January 26, 2007. No price point is given.

At the time of writing, we were unable to get hold of Sony for comment on the 20Gb PS3's appearance on Amazon UK, but according to reports, the company's labelled the e-tailer listing as pure speculation, adding that the fate of the lower-spec package - in terms of a UK release - remains undecided. ...
