    Article from IGN

Most any IGN reader knows that these new-fangled videogame tapes aren't the anti-female, gore-filled playthings of violence-obsessed social pariahs most senators would have the world believe. Now there is science to back you up.

Frank Alpert, a Professor of Marketing at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia, has just released the findings of his study on videogames, titled Entertainment Software: Suddenly Huge, Little Understood.

"It's only been around for about 25 years yet the entertainment software industry now outsells the movie box office," Alpert said.

According to the study videogame sales would outstrip CD sales in a few years time, mainly due to the increasing popularity of downloading music from the Internet.

His studies found that the average age of a game player was 33 and that women comprised 38% of players.

Action games are still the best-selling genre, but the most successful game brand of all time is Will Wrights' peaceful, virtual people series The Sims. According to Alpert the series popular is because there is no violence. "It's a far broader audience because it's about human relationships."

Despite the massive popularity of videogames, Alpert is aware of the need for literature and knowledge about this young but rapidly growing industry. "A lot of older people didn't grow up with it, don't play it and don't understand it. A lot of a younger people aren't yet in a position to write about it."

Prof Alpert plans to approach the Queensland government in an attempt to secure funding for further research into the videogame industry.

    Criitical Posted this news/release:

    Hi,

Following the recent release of sweetlilmre's SDL port for the Gizmondo, I thought I'd have a quick go at using it to port the GP2X port of chui's uae4all to the Gizmondo. It works, to a large extent (except for sound, and sundy other issues that are noted in the documentation).

I've attached release 1 of the port to this post, and will update it as I sort out the issues that still exist.

Please read the README_GIZMONDO.txt file before asking questions - if I've already provided an adequate answer in that text file I will be VERY annoyed that you didn't bother to read it before asking a question. I don't write instructions for fun.

Microsoft reps have denied recent rumors alleging that it has partnered with a number of Japanese consumer electronics companies to develop a device to compete in Japan with Apple's iPod.

Several reports are currently making the rounds, reporting that Microsoft has collaborated with eight other companies to create a new product to compete with Apple.

"The announcement that came out of Japan this week was simply about the Japanese launch of Windows Media Player 11," said a Microsoft representative who asked not to be named. "Due to translation issues the announcement was misconstrued to sound like Microsoft was developing a rival to the iPod; that's just not the case."

According to Microsoft, the press release (which is in Japanese) actually states that Microsoft announced availability for its new WMP 11 in the Japanese market. The companies listed in the release are companies that Microsoft has partnered with in Japan to ensure a good user experience. These companies have all agreed to support Windows Digital Rights Management 10 for portable devices.

"The companies listed in the Japanese release are device partners," the representative said. "For example, in the U.S. one of our device partners is iRiver. We've partnered closely with them to ensure that their Clix [media player] device runs WMP 11 technology."

The release lists both device partners and service partners. Device partners include iRiver Japan, NTT DoCoMo, CreativeMedia, Toshiba, and Victor JVC. Service partners include The Language Channel, a subscription-based e-learning service; OCN Music Store, which is used for Portable Media Center (PMC)-optimized video downloads; and Napster Japan. Napster Japan service is slated to become available in the fall of 2006.

"The announcement was written about the WMP 11 launch in Japan," said Microsoft representative Sally Julien. "The companies listed are partners who will use the technology in their products, just as they have done with WMP 10."

Both sources at Microsoft refused to comment when asked whether the company has plans to launch its own MP3 player. In addition, Microsoft refused to confirm recent rumors regarding a portable gaming device dubbed "xplayer."

"We don't comment on speculation," Julien said. "There are a ton of rumors out there right now but we have nothing to announce at this time."

Microsoft has already unveiled its WMP 11 technology in the states. The player comes integrated with MTV's URGE digital music service. Similar to existing music download services, URGE also offers music blogs, feeds, editorial content, radio, and MTV/VH1/CMT channel hubs. URGE incorporates MusicNet's 2 million-track music library.

Microsoft reps say U.S. consumers can expect to see verified MEDIA devices rolling out to retail stores in the coming months. These devices will be interoperable with WMP 11 and URGE.

    Zodttd posted this news:

I'm hoping to have the public Beta 2 out today or tommorow.

    It includes:
    - Hardware scaling support for interlace 1 option (no need for progressive).
    - A "threaded" interpreter giving a 1/8th speed boost to the emu overall, this is before underclocking.
    - Many improvements to the speed of the GPU. Unai did some excellent work and now has the GPU going much faster for 2D, and also faster for 3D rendering.
    - Oh did I mention underclocking? Yes, you can now underclock the emu's PSX clockspeed during gameplay. What does this mean...
    * I GOT 61-70 FPS IN BUSTER BROS MENU'S / INTROS AND 30-34 FPS IN-GAME! *

This really seems to help some games, but not much in others. I'm not quite sure why it doesn't help as much (a 3-5 FPS increase) in some games, but so much more in others. It seems to prefer 2D games with more potential for speed. Either way, you have to see games run at 60 FPS on the GP2X! It's jaw dropping.

For those who want "accurate emulation", the PSX Clock is set accurately by default. For those who want to try underclocking, it's available in-game and can be raised or lowered to certain reasonable extents with what seems to be no harm to the emulation.

This is really good stuff...I'm going to wait a little bit before releasing Beta 2 to see if Unai let's me know if he fixed a bug he had in the GPU. I don't know how severe the bug is, but I haven't noticed it in the games I tested.

With feedback from testing of the underclocking feature, I should be able to make an auto-clocking option.

I'm going to get everything ready for Beta 2 in the next couple of hours...
