News From Dreamcast Scene

Ya, it's about time. Sega of Japan have finaly added Rajirugi to their upcoming Dreamcast releases page. (You know, the page that suddenly stopped showing released for a few months and caused us all so much panic ) Anyway, there it is in all its glory. Hopefully they'll catch up with Under Defeat as well. Check it out here

Also, the cover art for Rajirugi has been released. Whether or not this is the cover art they are sticking with is yet to be said.

Gamespot reports that the company behind the Gizmondo handheld console, Tiger, is looking at some tough financial numbers. Mostly, it seems, brought on by poor sales of the console. From the article: "Gizmondo Europe subsidiary has experienced severe financial pressures from various vendors as its cash flow has been unable to service the requirements. This has in part been aggravated by a lack of investor funding. The company has been actively negotiating for further funds from debt and equity sources to assist the cash flow needs of Gizmondo Europe but there can be no assurances that this will be achieved ...

Time to announce the Winner

The judging is made up from 5 Judges, 3 are Coders (Inc Fanjita), Me Wraggster and one Wild card judge, the judging gives marks out of 10 and they are added up, then the winner is chosen.

Heres what our Special Guest Judge Fanjita said about the releases

OK, here goes. I've based my judgements on the following criteria, mainly:
technical achievement
originality
fun/wow factor
completeness and presentation

Quake 2
A great achievement by McZonk, this has come along a long way since the early alpha release that I saw.

This sets the standard for future 3D FPS homebrew for the PSP.
Overall score: 8

Ceres
A nice faithful asteroids clone, and the addition of a back-story helped with the professional appearance.

My only gripe was that there didn't seem to be a lot of difference from the previous version.
Overall score: 7

Tower Toppler
A fun, cartoony port with great presentation and a novel approach to platforming.

I found it difficult to get to grips with the controls, though.
Overall score: 6

PSP Cloth
I've always had a soft spot for small tech demos, and this is a great little demo of realistic cloth simulation. It's effects like this that add the finishing touch to professional games.
Overall score: 5

KETM
A nicely polished port of this fun shooter. With the ability to add new mods, this should have lasting appeal.
Overall score: 7

Missile Command
An update of the existing Duck Shoot LUA game, I enjoyed the missile-command style of play. The addition of downloadable cheats over wifi was a cool addition.
Overall score: 6

GALPSP
This wasn't really my kind of game, but I can see how it would appeal to fans of the genre. The library has obviously been well put together, and there's potential for some great games to come from this in the future.
Overall score: 7

Iris
A very nice achievement considering that this is original code and not a port. There are some small visual glitches that give away the beta status, but overall there's enormous potential in this game. Support for v2.0 is also a bonus.
Overall score: 9

PSP-OSS
At first glance, this is "yet another shell", but it becomes obvious that it's an extremely-well put together one. The skins are slick, the function is broad and well-implemented, and the effortless EBOOT launcher / HOME button handler hides some hard-core code.
Overall score: 9

News from the GP2xForge site:

After a week of hacking, I've managed to get a "bare essentials" version of GP2XForge on-line. So what's the point of this site? It will provide development resources to all interested open source developers for the GP2X. Currently, these focus on version control and publishing of source. In the future, they may be joined by facilities for file releases, mailing lists, and so forth.

Here's a list of projects currently hosted on this site. If you're interested in sharing your code, you're very welcome (even encouraged) to register a new project and host it here.

As for the current state of this site: well, as you can probably tell, it's not quite finished yet. No good prepackaged software was available for a site like this (at least, none that I could find, I tried GForge but it sucked hiney), so I'm more or less piecing this together as we go along. I ask for your patience. In due time, most if not all issues will be resolved, but in the meantime, I want to bring this functionality to the community as soon as possible. As the mantra of open source goes: Release early, release often.

Small changes in the server and client:

When there is packet loss, the server increments the delay in (number of lost packets)/10. This should fix the situation faster.
Bugfix: The client asks for the lost packets also at the end of the transfer instead of returning ack. This should solve many transfer errors.
Other small changes.

Well um, I should probably let people know how things are going again - so nobody gets the crazy idea that I'm abandoning the project or something like that. Anyway, the lib test app has been updated recently ( [wifi_lib_test.nds] ) - ICMP has been implemented to the point that you can ping the DS. Granted that's not entirely useful, but... whatever.... I'm continuing to work on bashing the other bits into shape, and I'm hoping to have a new release soon. The new release will be a bit different than the current release, a lot is changing, and it'll be much nicer for release 0.3. So, I've not given up yet... still working on it. Also, to clarify, Yes, I have completed the requirements for the remainder of the bounty, and have received the payment. Many thanks to all who contributed towards making this a reality!
