With announcements due from both Sony and Microsoft at Game Convention in Leipzig tomorrow, rumours at the show suggest that Sony will be dropping its PS2 price point - but that Microsoft may have little news to announce.
On the Xbox 360 front, however, reports that the date for the console and possibly even its price point could emerge at Game Convention appear to have been off the mark, with none of Microsoft's three key Xbox executives - Robbie Bach, J Allard and Peter Moore - making the trip over to Germany for the event.
In the absence of those executives, who have become the face of the Xbox 360 project, it's unlikely that an announcement about date or price will be made - with further announcements of European software support for the console perhaps more likely.
However, one strong hint about the price point for Xbox 360 did emerge today from Microsoft itself - with a German language page on the company's own website fingering CHF 600.- as the value of the console.
The page, which describes a new initiative offering incentives to resellers who sell certain volumes of Microsoft software, notes that an Xbox 360 console worth 600 Swiss Francs is one of the bonuses on offer.
That translates roughly as 386 Euro, or GBP 264 - which is broadly in line with the upper end of price expectations for the Xbox 360.
Although the figure is likely to be a rough estimate more than anything else, it does still suggest that Microsoft may come in at 399 Euro or thereabouts for the Xbox 360 - probably translating as GBP 299 - adding fuel to speculation that the console may be priced at a level somewhat higher than Microsoft's last system was at launch. ...by Published on August 16th, 2005 21:52
A new report by Japan's Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association has revealed that of all the current generation consoles, Japanese studios find the Xbox to be the most expensive platform to develop for.
CESA calculated that the average cost of producing an Xbox game is 202 million yen (USD 1.82 million) after 28 companies voluntarily disclosed their figures to the association.
In contrast, the CESA report states, it costs an average of 96 million yen (USD 877,000) to develop a game for the PS2. PSP games cost around 90 million yen (USD 822,000), as do GameCube titles, while each Game Boy Advance game costs the developer 53 million yen (USD 484,000).
However, at the other end of the spectrum, the cost of developing a game for Nintendo's new handheld, the DS, stands at only 37 million yen (USD 338, 286).
The figures for the Xbox are skewed somewhat, of course, because so few Japanese studios have ever invested significantly in producing Xbox software - meaning that they don't realise the same economies of scale that they have over the lifespan of the PS2. ...by Published on August 16th, 2005 21:49
Nintendo has confirmed that the biggest title on its release schedule for Christmas, GameCube title The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, has slipped to 2006 in all territories worldwide.
The platform holder says that creative leads Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma want the game to spend more time in development, and claims that the result will be a "more enjoyable gaming experience".
Despite the unveiling of its next-generation Revolution console and a new iteration of the Game Boy design, Twilight Princess was arguably Nintendo's biggest draw at this year's E3 conference in Los Angeles, and news that it will miss the end of the year is likely to be viewed as a huge blow for Nintendo.
In a statement released worldwide this morning, Nintendo said: "Our development team has decided to take extra time to add some incredible new elements to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. As a result, the game will now launch in 2006 globally. We recognise there may be some disappointed fans; however we firmly believe this additional time will result in a more enjoyable gaming experience."
The statement goes on to point out that Mario Smash Football (nee Super Mario Strikers), Battalion Wars, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness will all be out in time for Christmas. ...by Published on August 16th, 2005 21:19

The devkitPro windows installer has been released. This application will allow you to selectively download and install components of the devkitPro toolchains and later update them as required. The installer/updater even checks for updated versions of itself and will download and run the new installer. It doesn't get much easier than this.

PSP Hotbot has been updated to beta5, heres whats new
Beta 5 enhancements include:
Split setup for PSP 2.0 and 1.x

+ It's the same Hotpot software but with different default configuration.
+ The default configurations have been reviewed to offer speed over space (e.g., MP4 is prefered to MP3 for music encoding). You'll need to customize the settings again if you'd changed the previous configs. Apologies for any inconvenience caused (really !). I pondered over 2 days for this change but decided to do it while in beta.
Music Conversion (Existing users come first)
===========
+ jlanzago's request to handle iTunes MP3 to AAC converter for people who choose to use MP3 encoding in iTunes. I reviewed through various options (including going to QuickTime right away), but decided to postponed QT integration until v1.1 as planned.
The MP3 to AAC convertor uses iTunes itself to do the conversion. It should be able to handle your needs until I have full QT integration (like 1 month or so). You don't have to do anything to activate MP3 to AAC conversion, Hotpot will apply it automatically, MP3 -> AAC or AAC -> MP3.
2.0 Support
========
+ Beta 5 provides more robust support for MP4s. Previously certain files are not encoded in MP4 / AAC. Now it's enforced consistently as long as the user specifies MP4 as a preferred clone format.
+ Internet favorites can now be synced to PSP 2.0's bookmark. Existing bookmarks in PSP 2.0 web browser will be preserved. Hotpot will just transfer additional (selected) bookmarks from Windows to PSP. It's ok to sync many times, since Hotpot prunes duplicated entries away.
+ Typing History supported. I hate to use the keypad to type. Hotpot will now transfer every line from the history file "My Documents\PSP Keywords.txt" (if present) to your PSP. This gives you the ability to personalize the typing history to speed up keyboard input.
UI Enhancements
===========
+ Fixed an obscure crashing bug in the Settings dialog. This one got in during the last beta and escaped my regression tests.
+ Added code to warn users about outdated config file.
