Mobile entertainment specialists Tapwave are set to launch the Zodiac handheld in Europe within the next two months, with a price point and other launch details for the portable multimedia device set to be announced shortly. [br][br]In preparation for the launch, Tapwave has established a UK presence, with Andrzej Kasprzyk appointed as director of European sales, while Roy Parker has been named as director of international operations.[br][br]The system is expected to arrive at UK retail in the next six to eight weeks, and Tapwave hopes to see it appearing in a wide range of outlets - including a presence in both traditional games retail and in the PDA sections of more IT focused stores.[br][br]The Zodiac is a portable device based on the Palm operating system used by popular PDAs such as the Palm Tungsten and Sony Clie, but is optimised for use as a games and multimedia device.[br][br]While it retains the full personal organiser functionality of other Palm devices, it offers a large 480x320 widescreen display, an ATI 3D graphics chip, built-in stereo speakers, two SD card slots, an analogue control stick and shoulder L and R buttons.[br][br]The system, which launched in the USA in June, is capable of playing back music and movies as well as a variety of games - with Tapwave promoting a selection of boxed titles, including Doom II, Duke Nukem Mobile, Tony Hakws Pro Skater 4 and SpyHunter, as well as a game download service over the Tapwave.com portal. [br][br]The sleekly-designed device ships in two different versions - the Zodiac1 being a 32Mb system, while the Zodiac2 sports 128Mb of built-in memory - and appears to be squarely targeted at older gamers and professionals seeking to upgrade their PDAs and snag a gaming system in the process.[br][br]The timing of Tapwave's launch in Europe is also good - since neither Nintendo nor Sony will be launching their next-generation handhelds in this market until 2005, arguably leaving the Christmas market wide open for a handheld device. [br][br]"Right out of the gate, European interest in the Zodiac has been strong, from consumers and media to distributors and developers," according to Tapwave co-founder Byron Connell. "The company is now ready to unveil our multimedia console in other markets, starting in the UK and then expanding from there. We are looking forward to starting a relationship with consumers and distributors worldwide." ...

Nurve Networks LLC unveils what is undoubtedly the most unexpected kind of new video game system: one that users will learn how to design, program and build themselves.[br][br]Video games generate billions of dollars in revenue each year and game programming books occupy rows of bookstore shelf space. Video game development has made its way into college curriculums and entire game programming universities have emerged. But, video games run on advanced hardware, the design of which is a black art that few understand.[br][br]For over a decade, books by Computer Scientist and best-selling game development author Andre' LaMothe (his latest title "Tricks of the 3D Game Programming Gurus") have taught generations of game developers to create today's cutting-edge video games. Now, his focus is changing from video game software to video game hardware with the unveiling of the XGameStation Micro Edition, a revolutionary new video game system that offers users what no PlayStation or XBOX can - knowledge. While the other systems duke it out in a never-ending battle of polygon counts and shader passes, the XGameStation is less about upgrading its own hardware and more about upgrading your grey matter.[br][br]The XGameStation Micro Edition (XGS ME) is a complete game development kit inspired by classic systems such as the Atari 2600, 800, Apple II, C64 and Nintendo Entertainment System. The XGS kit includes a fully-assembled XGS unit with all necessary cables and accessories, a full-length eBook written by Andre LaMothe on the design and programming of the XGS along with all the software necessary to create your own games, demos, and experiments. The book introduces the reader to analog/digital engineering, then gradually explores the entire design of the XGS's hardware and software.[br][br]Armed with a complete understanding of how the system was built and operates, users then create their own games or play games made by their peers. The online community at http://www.xgamestation.com completes the system's appeal, providing a place for XGameStation developers to share ideas, software and even discuss hardware modifications. As the holy wars continue over which console is better, XGameStation unites gamers, hobbyists and students in a single community where the goal is not to prove who has the best specs, but to work together for a common goal of learning, understanding and pushing the system's limits.[br][br]The system plugs into any NTSC/PAL TV and supports vintage Atari 2600 controllers as well as a PS/2 keyboard. XGameStation Micro Edition games and applications are stored on internal processor Flash, allowing users to develop and download their games from a PC using the accompanying tools.[br][br]In short, by empowering hobbyists and game developers with a game platform they can truly call their own, the XGameStation Micro Edition is reviving the magic of programming and hardware hacking for systems like the Apple II, Atari 800 and Commodore 64. For the first time in history, the engineers of tomorrow's cutting edge video game systems will learn and build their skills using one from today.[br][br]The official website for the XGameStation is http://www.xgamestation.com/ there you will find Media, Downloads, Demos, and more information on purchasing the XGS Micro Edition. ...

Nokia has announced that shipments of its N-Gage game decks have surpassed a million units worldwide, with strong uptake of the new N-Gage QD hardware driving significantly improved sales in the past months.[br][br]The company's senior vice president for games, Ilkka Raiskinen, announced the achievement at the European Games Network trade show in London yesterday - where the firm is also showcasing its forthcoming N-Gage line-up.[br][br]While the figure represents shipments rather than sell-through, company spokespeople indicated that channel inventories are quite low, so the installed base isn't far behind the million mark.[br][br]Raiskinen also revealed that around 150,000 N-Gage users have signed up to the N-Gage Arena service, representing around 15 per cent of the installed base of the system, and that the game deck has had a global tie ratio of "more than one, but less than two" software units.[br][br]One slightly surprising revelation was the fact that the N-Gage has performed most strongly in the United Kingdom, with sales of the system here far outstripping sales in any other territories. Europe remains Nokia's strongest territory overall for N-Gage, but the company believes that early figures from N-Gage QD suggest a reversal of fortunes in the USA, where N-Gage has so far failed to gain a foothold.[br][br]Nokia also chose the European Games Network event to unveil a new addition to its Christmas software line-up, with Gameloft's Asphalt Urban GT providing the platform with a 3D racing title which features over 20 licensed cars which can be fully customised by buying new parts in the game. ...
