EA reckons physical media - games on a disc sold in a real world shop - still have a future, despite the growth of digital sales and the emergence of streaming.
EA's European boss Jens Uwe Intat outlined three reasons why he's convinced physical media isn't going anywhere: the sheer size of video games in terms of data, the desire by many to own a physical copy of a game, and gift giving.
"The amount of data our developers put into a game grows so fast," he told Eurogamer. "Software engineers, you give them storage space and they use it. As fast as the pipes grow, those guys are so creative.
"Secondly, there are people who just like to have a physical copy of a game. Thirdly, there is still this impulse purchasing and gift purchasing where people just like to give a physical present to somebody rather than a voucher or an attachment to an email.
"So I think there is still a lot of reasons why physical goods in bricks and mortar stores will have an interesting future."
Uwe Intat's comments echo those of his boss, CEO John Riccitiello, who in January cast doubt on the viability of cloud-based gaming services.
"We make services, we don't make products, and I think the challenge I would have in answering the question the way you framed it is I don't think people want a streaming game service. I think they want their games to work," he said.
This despite EA's own prediction that digitally delivered content will bring in more business than traditional packaged games by the end of 2011. EA also recently launched Steam rival Origin, its PC download shop.
Wii and 3DS maker Nintendo has also backed physical media. In February Nintendo of Europe's MD of marketing and PR, Laurent Fischer said packaged software will "drive the mass market".
And in August last year then Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai insisted a digital future is over 10 years away.
"We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn't as robust as one would hope," Hirai said.
"There's always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium.
"To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even 10 years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme."
Last July saw a watershed moment in the rise of digitally distributed games, when NPD revealed that US PC game digital downloads were reaching parity with in-store sales.
In October 2010 Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick predicted that in three years' time 40 per cent of the Grand Theft Auto company's sales will be digitally distributed titles.

Microsoft will announce the arrival of new apps for the Xbox 360 "very, very soon".
Last.fm, Facebook, Twitter and Sky are already part of the Xbox 360. YouTube with voice search through Bing is coming with the Christmas redesign of the dashboard.
More third-party applications are set to hit Xbox 360, Robin Burrowes, Xbox Live product marketing manager for EMEA [Europe, Middle East and Africa], told Eurogamer.
"We're working avidly to extend those entertainment partners," he said. "Nothing, unfortunately, to announce today.
"The announcement to be of more partners coming to the platform will give us that critical mass of content experiences.
"There will be announcements, so look out for those coming very, very soon indeed in terms of that space.
"The engine has been really built to cater to that additional amount of content."
One app rumoured to be coming to the Xbox 360 is Skype, which Microsoft bought for a whopping $8.5 billion in May.
Another is the BBC iPlayer, which the BBC wants on the Xbox 360, but only if it is available to all - not just Xbox Live Gold subscribers. The BBC iPlayer is currently available on the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii free of charge.
"We want to be on as many devices as possible," BBC general manager for programmes and on demand Daniel Danker said earlier this month.
"Of course we'd love to be on the Xbox because we want to get the iPlayer to as many licence payers as possible, which is pretty much everyone in the UK.
"We want to be on the cheapest level that you can have on Xbox, and not only for [Xbox Live] Gold subscribers."
In late 2009, a BBC source told The Telegraph: "Microsoft only wants to offer its users access to platforms it can charge for as this is the model it is pursuing.
"This does not fit with the BBC's model and Microsoft will not budge at the moment. It is really frustrating for those involved on the BBC side who want to make sure iPlayer is rolled out on as many popular entertainment platforms as possible."
On the issue of the BBC iPlayer coming to Xbox 360, Burrowes remained tight-lipped, but did say talks were ongoing.
"I can't talk about the specific nature of the deal," he said. "All I can say is there are a number of active discussions with a number of partners right now. We are talking to key partners at any given time in the UK.
"Our desire is to bring as many of them to the platform as we possibly can. But I can't talk about the specific nature of any deal. There are too many sensitivities in and around that. Unfortunately some of those sensitivities have spilled out in the past."
There are 35 million Xbox Live members across the world.

Whatever your feelings about Kinect Star Wars, only the coldest of hearts could fail to be excited about this news.
Eurogamer reports that two German retailers have listed a lightsaber peripheral that is Kinect compatible and designed to work with Microsoft's upcoming Kinect Star Wars.
It is said to have a light effect but, strangely, not take any batteries. Prices are currently around the EURO 16 point.
Although the game will not require the use of a controller or accessory, as Kinect tracks a user's body there is in theory nothing to stop a user holding any object they like in their hands. A long, thin lightsaber like device is unlikely to hamper how the camera operates.
In most instances a superfluous accessory would be a nuisance, but in this instance? Yes, that's right. It will make the game one thousand per cent better.

    2. Nintendo 3DS News

Nintendo has confirmed that Super Mario Land: 2: 6 Golden Coins and Metroid 2: Return Of Samus will be released for 3DS via the eShop this year.

Super Mario Land 2 saw the debut of Mario evil alter-ego, Wario, who makes his first appearance as the main bad guy in this cool platformer.

Metroid 2 was notable for being eight times the size of the previous game - impressive for a handheld game released in 1993 - and sees Samus visit the Metroid home planet to destroy them before the Space Pirates attempt to harness their power.

Both games are slated for a Q4 2011 release, and will make nice additions to the 20 free games that 3DS ambassadors will receive before the year's out.

Nintendo will give away Legend of Zelda: Four Swords free via the DSiWare store next month as part of the Legend of Zelda 25th year anniversary celebrations.
As detailed at E3, the DSiWare version will be a remake of the GBA Four Swords game that came on the same cart as Zelda: A Link to the Past. It's a four-player co-op game that sees Link split in four using the Four Sword and set out to rescue Princess Zelda once again.

Those who played the GBA original remember its mint co-op gameplay mechanics that forced players to work together in tandem to overcome puzzles and sweet boss fights.

Nintendo makes no mention of online play, so our guess is it'll support local wireless play only.

You will be able to download the game for free some time "in September" via the DSiWare store via a DSi or DSi XL, or from the eShop store via a 3DS.

Nintendo last week confirmed a Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword release date for UK for November 18.
