Nintendo's Profits Rise 43 Percent, Lifted by Popularity of New Wand-Wielding Wii Game Console

TOKYO Jan 25, 2007 (AP)— Booming year-end sales of the wand-wielding Wii game console sent profit at Nintendo soaring 43 percent for the nine months ended December, the Japanese manufacturer of Pokemon and Super Mario games said Thursday.

Nintendo Co., which also makes GameBoy Advance and Nintendo DS handheld machines, recorded group net profit of 131.9 billion yen ($1.1 billion) in the first nine months of the fiscal year, up dramatically from 92.2 billion yen the same period a year earlier.

The company did not break down quarterly numbers.

Sales soared 73 percent to 712.6 billion yen ($5.9 billion) during the April-December period from 412.3 billion yen the previous year, the Kyoto-based company said in a release.

Nintendo's Wii is embroiled in a head-to-head battle in next-generation home game consoles against sector leader Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, which has been plagued with production problems.

Wii, inspired by the English word "we," has benefited from its fun image built around the wandlike remote controller that players wave around like a tennis racket, fishing rod, drumstick or gun, depending on the game.

Nintendo said it sold 3.19 million Wii machines worldwide, 1.25 million in the Americas, and 1.14 million in Japan.

The company said it had met its target of 4 million units shipped by the end of 2006 as that number had been manufactured and were still getting distributed, according to spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa.

He said Nintendo was well on its way to reach its target of global shipment for 6 million Wii machines by March 31, the end of the current fiscal year, and will have manufactured 7 million Wii machines in fiscal 2006.

Earlier this month, Sony said it shipped 2 million PlayStation 3 machines worldwide by mid-January, falling about two weeks behind its initial plan in shipments in Japan. The machine's launch in Europe has been delayed until later this year. Sony is also targeting shipping 6 million PS3 machines by March 31.

Selling machines in high volumes is crucial in the gaming business because hot-selling formats attract software companies to make more games, which in turn boost console sales and often bring in hefty profits for the hardware companies that also make software.

The Wii faced some minor problems early on with its wand, which flew out of the hands of some enthusiastic players, snapping the wrist strap and sometimes crashing into TVs.

But that hasn't dented the company's profits or stopped the Wii from selling well.

A voluntary exchange for a thicker strap for the controller announced in December will cost slightly more than 1 billion yen ($8 million; euro6 million), including costs extending beyond the period covered in Thursday's report, Minagawa said.

Nintendo said it was also marking robust sales with its Nintendo DS portable, totaling 18.88 million units sold worldwide in the first three quarters the fastest rising game platform ever in the Japan market. The machine is also selling briskly overseas, it said.

In-house game software sales, which are crucial for boosting profitability for game companies, also did well for Nintendo, it said, such as "New Super Mario Bros.," "Brain Age" and "Nintendogs" for DS, and "The Legend Zelda: Twilight Princess," for Wii.

Etsuko Tamura, analyst for Mizuho Investors Securities in Tokyo, said Nintendo was likely to do well through next fiscal year because of a planned strong lineup of game software, such as "Dragon Quest" for DS.

"There's no bad news for Nintendo," she said, shrugging off some doubts that consumers may already be starting to tire of the Wii, partly because of its simplicity. "Nintendo will come up with new kinds of games for Wii."

Easy-to-play games to attract the elderly and other newcomers are likely in the works, including dieting games, said Tamura.

Nintendo also got a boost from the weaker yen, which inflates overseas earnings when repatriated. During the nine months, Nintendo racked up a 26 billion yen ($216 million) foreign exchange gain.

The company kept its full-year forecast unchanged at 120 billion yen ($996 million) profit, despite heftier profits for the nine-month period partly because of the uncertainty of currency fluctuations, on 900 billion yen ($7.5 billion) sales.

Nintendo shares, which have more than doubled over the last year, closed up 1.5 percent in Tokyo at 33,500 yen ($278) shortly before earnings were announced.

Iv been seeing many user have difficulty running Ratchet and Clank size matters on Custom firmware. Im on 3.10OE-A' and im running it perfectly with no problems at all. It is confirmed to work as long as you have your configuration in the recovery menu of your custom firmware set up the correct way.

    Here are the correct settings-

    -configuration-
Game folder homebrew (currently: 3.XX Kernal)
    Use NO-UMD (currently:disabled)
    Fake region (currently:America)
    Free UMD region(currently Enabled)

    -Advanced-
    -advanced configuration-
Plain modules in UMD/ISO (currently: Enabled)

    -CPU Speed-
    Speed in UMD/ISO (currently:333)

(apparently some user's use 266mhz, try that. I'm using 333mhz and its running perfectly.)

    -Plugins-
    All Disabled!

Side Note- These are the settings to run the UMD of ratchet and Clank. DCEmu is not interested in the settings to run the ISO or any other copywritten illegal ISO.

    Thanks you

Infrastructure in Ratchet and Clank: size matters still does not work on Custom firmware. It is rumored however to be working on Devhook.

    DIGG THIS

Fanjita and Ditlew have released a new downgrader for the latest version of PSP firmware, heres the latest release info below:

    v3.03 Downgrader

After much work over the past few days, we finally succeeded - we have an easy-to-use downgrader for v3.03 PSPs!

    Some ground-rules:

    * This downgrader is for v3.03 firmware only. But if you have v2.81 - v3.02, no problem - you can just upgrade to v3.03 to use the downgrader.
    * You need a copy of the unpatched GTA:Liberty City Stories UMD. No ISOs, no patched UMDs, not Vice City Stories. See here for some info on how to check if your version is patched. The most reliable way : the unpatched disks have the v2.0 firmware update on them.
    * This downgrader is intended to enable homebrew. Homebrew is NOT the same as piracy. Don't be a thieving loser - buy the games you play.
    * The downgrader will work on all current PSP hardware (TA-079 - TA-086). Patching of TA-082+ is automatic in the downgrader.
    * You downgrade at your own risk. There is always a chance of bricking, although we have done everything we can think of to make this process safe.

Full instructions for downgrading are included in the Downgrader_HOWTO.txt file in the ZIP file. Read them carefully! You will need

Warning: After downgrading from 3.03 to 1.5, there are some remnants of 3.03 left in flash. If you later try to re-upgrade to 3.03 and repeat the downgrade, things will break. At some later point, we will work on a cleaner that will remove these extra files. Until then, enjoy! (Don't worry, upgrading to 3.03 OE firmwares still works fine).

    HEN for v3.03 (final release)

If you're not keen on the risk of downgrading your PSP, you might prefer to use a homebrew loader instead. Well, we've thought of you - we give to you "HEN 303 - the Duff release" (named in the eLoader tradition!).

HEN 303 (short for Homebrew ENabler) works in the same way as Dark_AleX's HEN for 2.71 firmwares. By running HEN, it installs a patch in your PSP's memory, that allows you to run homebrew almost as if you had a v1.5 PSP. This patch remains in place until you fully turn off your PSP - it will survive the PSP being placed into sleep mode.

The requirements for HEN are the same as for the downgrader - you need the unpatched GTA:LCS, and a v3.03 firmware PSP.

You can view the readme.txt file in the archive for more details about how to use it. Remember that not as much homebrew works with HEN as it does with eLoader or v1.5 firmware. But we hope to release an eLoader plugin for HEN soon, that would improve that situation - and remember that the amount of homebrew that works with HEN is increasing all the time.

Note: a pre-release version of this file was leaked on the internet. It is dangerous and could brick your PSP - do not run it or distribute it. The authentic version contains the text "This is the official final released version of 3.03 HEN" in the readme.txt file.

Innovation of the WowWee Robosapien V2 robot continues to flourish, and now you can control this budding robot overlord with a Wii remote. In this seemingly endless preview video, watch just long enough to see the 3.x alpha version of Robodance open-source software linking the Wii to the little guy. In addition to letting you script routines for the robot, this version that will be released next month maps commands from the Robosapien's complex remote to the much easier-to-use Wiimote.

If you do end up watching most of the video, check out the cheesy script where the robot actually tickles Elmo. Sweet. Anyway, Robosapien's no Asimo, but the little guy can do a lot for his $120ish price, and the Wiimote makes his antics nearly effortless to control and even more fun.

    news via cubed3

Following Cubedł's intial report of Telltale Games being interested in Wii development, confirmation of it becoming a reality has now emerged.

According to a new update on Telltale Games' website, the company has made headway with Nintendo to become an official developer on the Wii console. The team is now looking for a Wii Systems Programmer who can migrate core components of D3D based PC game engine to the Wii, implement additional platform specific features, modify and support existing art and production path to accommodate Wii production, as well as contribute to the design and direction of Telltale Technology and products.

But what could they be working on? Clearly after all the initial talk of Sam & Max you would hope that it is definitely in the pipeline, and the fact that Telltale also stipulates under the 'Additional Preferred' section of the position that the applicant must have a 'love of adventure games' is certainly a positive sign.

Definitely good news, especially with the comments from Autumn Moon Entertainment's Bill Tiller (another former LucasArts stalwart from when the company worked on numerous adventure titles) in Cubedł's exclusive interview from late last year: http://www.cubed3.com/news/6275/

    Hong Kong -

Nintendo reported Friday that sales of its new Wii videogame platform have pushed the company's earnings up 43% in the last year.

The results helped Kyoto, Japan-based Nintendo (other-otc: NTDOY - news - people ) hit its 52-week high by closing at 34,150 yen ($281.14) on Friday. Nintendo's shares have climbed 113% in the last year.

Nintendo’s net income topped 131.92 billion yen ($1.1 billion) for the nine months through December 2006, up from 92.19 billion yen ($764.6 million) in 2005, beating a 12-month profit forecast of 120 billion yen ($996 million) for this year.

Much of that increase came from the Wii, the relatively low-priced game machine that Nintendo introduced last fall to compete with Sony's (nyse: SNE - news - people ) PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) Xbox 360.

Nintendo’s Wii has outperformed Sony's machine, which debuted at the same time. According to research house NPD Group, Nintendo shipped 1.1 million Wii consoles to the U.S. in November and December, 60% more than shipments of PlayStation 3. In Japan, Nintendo sold nearly 990,000 units in December, more than twice PlayStation3’s sales in two months, according to Tokyo research firm Enterbrain.

Microsoft, meanwhile, lowered its forecast for its Xbox 360 machines, which it began selling at the end of 2005. The company had previously predicted it would sell 13 million to 15 million machines by the end of June. But yesterday Microsoft predicted it would likely sell 12 million consoles by that date. ...

    news via wii.vggen

Speaking to Game Informer, Hudson Entertainment's John Lee hinted at the possibility of an original Games Channel for the Nintendo Wii.

When he was asked about Hudson publishing original games on the Virtual Console, he stated: "Well, the VC was specifically designed to bring back classic games, not to introduce new content. So to answer your question specifically: No."

"However, in the future, you should rephrase that question to: Are there any plans to launch original content on some downloadable service on the Wii, and you might get a different answer."

CVG contacted Nintendo regarding the quote, and the company of course responded that it does plan to allow original content to be released via the Wii Shop. Which it naturally should've, since the company confirmed at last year's E3 that original content would be released at some point. It's not surprising that Nintendo would want to separate it from classic titles in some way. ...
