Microsoft's usually not accustomed to leaving the release dates of Halo titles unspecified -- without a firm launch window, how would Peter Moore have known what to tattoo upon his rippling biceps? That's why we were surprised the drop date for Ensemble Studio's spartan-filled RTS entry, Halo Wars, had remained a vague "first half of 2009" for quite some time -- until now. Microsoft has finally solidified the game's U.S. release date: March 3, 2009.

Interestingly enough, we won't be the first region to strategically duke it out with the Covenant -- the game is dropping in Japan on Feb. 26, and in Africa, Europe and the Middle East the day after. Don't get too jealous, though, only the North American version allows you to command your troops to teabag your fallen foes en masse. We think it's worth the wait. ...

Sony has confirmed previous reports that Street Fighter Sackboys will be let loose into LittleBigPlanet.

"For all you fans who want to add to your growing costume collection, each costume will be available for $1.99. OR you can purchase ALL 4 COSTUMES for $5.99 in our Street Fighter Costume Pack," reads the US PlayStation Blog.

You may remember that pics of the plush fighters appeared online buit then were quickly taken down. When will they learn that once it's out, it's out, and just deal with it?

Fingeres crossed this happen in the Euro update this week too. But we're still waiting for Super Street Fighter Turbo HD Remix II (is that right) to hit PSN. Get a move on Capcom. Please.

More than 3 million copies of Xbox 360 exclusive Gears of War 2 have now been sold.

That's according to Mark Rein, the vice president of Epic Games. He told Eurogamer, "Microsoft confirmed to me this afternoon that Gears of War 2 sell-through surpassed 3 million units as of last week."

The original Gears, released in November 2006, was also a huge hit - but it was 10 weeks before sales reached the 3 million mark.

Gears of War 2 was released on 7th November, so it's taken just a month for the sequel to hit the same target. The news isn't altogether surprising when you consider that 2 million copies of the game were sold during the opening weekend alone. ...

US mega-retailer Wal-mart says it will offer "tens of thousands" of Nintendo's hard-to-find Wii from today.

Walmart.com is selling Wii units for $249.24, a "value bundle" including the console and accessories for $329, as well as offering a range of cut price deals on software, all while supplies last.

According to Reuters, Wii had sold out on Walmart.com, bestbuy.com and circuitcity.com as of Friday.

Despite Nintendo upping its monthly Wii production rates to 2.4 million consoles per month, the company recently warned that it might not be able to meet demand this Christmas. HMV doesn't

The fact that Walmart.com will be offering so many console is perhaps a good sign then, for US shoppers at least.

We've contacted Nintendo UK to ask whether the company's expecting Wii shortages in the coming weeks, and to see whether it has any advice for shoppers searching for the console, which recently topped online shopper search lists and was eBay's most wanted product too. ...

Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: World at War has achieved its fourth consecutive week at the top of ELSPA/GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 40 Chart, fending off advances from a range of new entries.

No new entry lands higher than No.22, which goes to the PC version of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV. Nintendo and Ubisoft’s latest releases, Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City and Prince Of Persia came in at No.26 and No.30 respectively, despite the anticipation surrounding each title.

Despite failing to enter the Top 40 upon release, Sonic Unleashed finally makes it into the charts at No.33, while the final new entry, Sony’s SingStar ABBA, appears at No.40.

Several titles rose significantly through the chart: WWE SmackDown Vs RAW 2009, up from No.22 to No.14; Far Cry 2, up from No.28 to No.17; and Fable II, up from No.35 to No.19.

Nintendo continues to fare particularly well in the Top 40, with four titles in the Top 10, including Mario Kart Wii in second place, Brain Training in fourth, and Wii Fit and Wii Play in eighth and ninth respectively.

We'd like to begin this new feature, this amalgam of new offerings on the Virtual Console and WiiWare by asking for your help: We really need a catchier title than "Wii Post." Sure, it's practical, but it's not exactly "sticky," to drop some marketing lingo on you. Leave a great new one as a comment on this post and you'll win momentary fame and the satisfaction of a job well done.

    WiiWare:
    • Bruiser and Scratch (Steel Penny Games, Inc., 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points): Bruiser and Scratch is a game about a dog and a cat who solve mysteries together. In addition to its irrefutably ridiculous premise (a dog and a cat working together?), B&S also features the above image, which is literally a screenshot from the game.
    • Hockey Allstar Shootout (Big Blue Bubble Inc., 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): You can't trust two-thirds of this game's title: This isn't actually a hockey game -- just a collection of player vs. goalie encounters -- and there are no allstars. So, with the WiiWare press release apparently penned by an unreliable narrarator, we're left with more questions than answers. Are there actual shootouts? Is it really 500 points? There's really no way to tell at this point.

    Virtual Console:
    • Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Sega Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Yeah, we know, we could have sworn this was already on Virtual Console too. [Update: Oh, that's right: It totally was. Update 2: Yes, we know they're different games. We just wanted everyone to know they're not hallucinating.]

Do not attempt to degauss your monitor, you read that correctly: According to UK's Times Online, PlayStation Home is "slated for release in the next 10 days." Color (or colour, rather) us mighty skeptical of the report, but after waiting so long for its public unveiling, we're hoping this isn't another false report. It should be noted that just recently, Red Bull has begun advertising inside Home.

Our present from Sony this year? With any luck, it's front-row tickets to the Great Collective Sigh™, whereby gamers worldwide all at once let out a drawn-out breath and say, "it's about fracking time." We've gone ahead and Facebook-poked our Sony contacts for more information. ...

Microsoft Game Studios boss Phil Spencer may "break the bank" at E3 next year by talking about Xbox 360 titles further than five or six months away.

"I came out of an E3 planning meeting just about an hour ago and we were looking at some of the plans for the future and things that we might want to tease," Spencer told Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb in a podcast.

"[It's] very exciting, because there's a lot of stuff on the docket and maybe we'll break the bank a little bit and talk about things that are further out, which will hopefully get the community excited."

Spencer said there had been "some pressure" to do so, but was careful not to spoil any of the surprises.

Microsoft delivered one of the strongest platform holder conferences at E3 this year, thanks to the New Xbox Experience and the unforeseen Final Fantasy XIII for Xbox 360 announcement.

The company has so far been secretive about plans for 2009, however, although Halo Wars and Halo 3: ODST are already talking points.

Spencer had just been to see the former, and said everything was hunky dory at developer Ensemble, which is to close after Halo Wars ships. Contrary to popular belief, the real-time strategy game will apparently feature a lot of storytelling and video cut-scenes; good for those "into the Halo fiction", said Spencer.

He also looked back at the catalogue of first-party Xbox 360 success stories, which recently include Fable II and Gears of War 2. The latter, he said, is "pushing 3 million" sales. Not bad for a series that didn't exist until this generation. ...

Shadowgrounds developer Frozenbyte and French publisher Nobilis have revealed an intriguing PSN and PC game called Trine.

Due in the second quarter of 2009, the idea is to hot-swap between three classes in order to reach the end of the level.

The first video, which sits on the Trine website, shows a Wizard character summoning platforms and physical objects in order to solve puzzles and bridge gaps.

Then there's a Thief who fires her arrows from afar to deal with baddies, and uses a grappling rope to hook onto platforms and swing across large chasms.

Finally, a Warrior character is at hand to use his big hammer to smash the living - or not-so-living - daylights out of any skeletons or fantasy baddies silly enough to get in the way.

Trine looks rather nice, too - but then we like robes and wizards' hats and things. The full website should launch as this year turns into next. ...
