BioWare has said the next downloadable addition to Mass Effect will be a Fight Club-style arena. Expect less of a focus on story, and more on gambling and good old-fashioned dust-ups.

"We had something in Mass Effect 1 that again, we weren't able to pull off just because we didn't have the time and we didn't think we'd be able to do it well enough, which was a fight club or an arena. So we're actually working on that for our next downloadable content piece and we're hoping it'll be really special," said BioWare's Preston Watamaniuk. He was speaking in a documentary bundled with Mass Effect Platinum Hits and leaked to YouTube (thanks, Joystiq).

"We wanted to be able to give people a much more combat-oriented, lighter-story experience," added Mass Effect project director Casey Hudson. "You're going to go to a kind of casino gaming fight club space station."

BioWare has previously used arenas in both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire. There's no word on when the content will be available for Mass Effect.

BioWare boss Ray Muzyka went on to stress the importance of post-release content for Mass Effect as a series.

"Mass Effect, like I said earlier, is this big toy box; this enormous galaxy with millions of stars and planets to explore and we can select the interesting ones and develop them out and continue the storyline as we did with the Batarian race in Bring Down the Sky," he said.

"From a franchise perspective it's going to help fill in the gaps and understanding and continue certain plotlines and develop other certain types of gameplay. And really we'll try and customise it and build other types of post-release downloadable content to different play-patterns and to suit different types of players."

Casey Hudson said players will also be able to carry characters from Mass Effect 1 over into subsequent instalments in the series, making post-release content more appealing.

As for news on Mass Effect 2, Hudson suggested we'll be looking at a "much darker experience" that touches on different themes to the first game.

"In the second game you're actually going to go through a darker period where you're really looking for answers; it's a lot harder to find what the realities are, and there are a lot of twists and turns and it's generally a much darker experience," he said.

Preston Watamaniuk added: "We are going to continue on other themes such as technology: what does it mean to be alive? How does synthetic life or intelligence compare to real-, true-life or organic life? How do you cross those boundaries, can we cross those boundaries, should we cross those boundaries? We really want to push into that direction."

Watamaniuk explained that BioWare wants to make player decisions span across the entire Mass Effect trilogy, too, otherwise there would be no point including them.

Mass Effect 2 is due for release by April 2010, and on multiple platforms. BioWare hasn't yet explained whether that includes PS3. ...

Namco Bandai plans to release a brand new Naruto PS2 game here in May.

Ultimate Ninja 4 will be the first instalment based on the Naruto Shippuden anime. It is set two-and-a-half years after the ninja left his friends to pursue his craft.

That's exciting for fans of the series, because all sorts will have changed for his return, which soon sees him uncovering a threat from a mysterious organisation called Akatsuki. Dun dun dun.

The main Master mode combines RPG and action, and tells the story of Naruto's return to Hidden Leaf Village. There's a Free Battle mode boasting the usual one-on-one fights to accompany the main campaign, and more characters than ever to pick from. ...

Here's an interesting one-off about Windows Mobile 6.5. Microsoft has mandated that all phones running the OS feature a physical "Start" button.

Using the Start button will not take you to the Home screen, like the Zune, but to that trademark honeycomb icon screen that's new to Windows Mobile 6.5. As much as we like touchscreens, mandating a hard button in the 6.5 spec seems like a smart decision from Microsoft—one that should keep widely varied phones running the OS doing so with some level of consistency. ...

The Palm Pre isn't pulling any punches when it comes to attacking iPhone weaknesses. It has copy and paste, data tethering and will support Adobe's Flash.

Flash was confirmed to Newsweek's Dan Lyons weeks ago, but now they're being open about the support.

Palm has joined Adobe's Open Screen Project—an industry initiative designed to bring full web browsing and Flash-based apps to televisions, desktops and mobile devices. So, by definition, this will not only bring a complete web-browsing experience to the Palm Pre, it could also result in the development of standalone Flash apps for the webOS platform. The Flash player for smartphones is expected to be released by the end of the year. ...

So this thing's definitely got some heft to it -- and honestly, especially for a business-centric device in this class, we don't think that's a bad thing. As with just about everything HTC churns out, the Touch Pro2 is exquisitely manufactured, feels rock-solid, and the WVGA is absolutely awesome -- we noticed that the gestures and animations are totally smooth and responsive, proving that WinMo is perfectly capable of handling this kind of UI dazzle.

The Straight Talk functionality for seamlessly moving between different types of communication will be appreciated by anyone who spends half their business day on the phone and seems to work (and look) positively lovely -- and as for that speakerphone? We can totally picture ourselves slamming this thing upside down during a meeting in a fit of "our company just lost a $100M contract"-style rage with a satisfying, weighty "thud" and instantly bringing the whole room into the conversation. Follow the break for a couple videos of this thing in action (and sorry, no angry speakerphone fits).

Microsoft has no plans to change the price points of the Xbox 360 in Europe to take into account the impact of the falling pound Sterling versus the Euro, which effectively makes the console cheaper in the UK compared to mainland Europe.

Additionally, there's little evidence that European gamers are taking advantage of the situation and importing consoles en masse, according to the corporation's VP for the Interactive Entertainment Business in the EMEA region, Chris Lewis.

"We're mindful of [the situation], but it's very hard to plan too far ahead as regards foreign exchange rate fluctuations," he said. "Sterling right now is in a different place right now versus the Euro and the Dollar, and the Yen - so that which you allude to, you'd start to expect to see some the Sterling-based business hemorrhage out of the UK.

"Actually we're not seeing that much of it - we have a look at it a couple of weeks ago along those lines, trying to match our sell-in with our sell-through to see if there's a disparity there that might imply that stock is going elsewhere. We're not really seeing a lot of it at the moment - but that's not to say it won't start to happen.

"Do we then get into a flurry of price changes? No, I think we remain structured about it and we don't try and predict too far ahead what we think currencies will do. I think we're in a fine place as regards our price points anyway now, and I think the consumers are testament to that - they are flooding to the platform in a way that is even beyond our own expectation levels to be honest - which is great.

"Fortunately we've built sufficient inventory to give us the flexibility to accommodate those levels of demand versus our original plan, so we haven't had any stock shortages. We have sufficient stock to continue to cope with increased demand," he added.

The full interview with Chris Lewis, in which he also talks about the impact of marketing and the New Xbox Experience, is available now. ...

Whilst some stockists claim to be continuing to struggle to get their hands on copies of Wii Fit, enough of Nintendo’s title has clearly made it into the channel to secure a fifth successive week at the top of the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack UK All Formats Top 40 this week.

It’s the ninth time that Wii Fit has topped the UK listings, putting the title within touching distance of becoming Nintendo’s most successful chart title ever.

And there’s more success for Nintendo, too, with news that last week’s number four, DS hidden object debutant Mystery Case Files: Millionheir, has climbed one place to third this week.
