Released today, iR Shell, developed by Ahman, has returned in version 4.7. It includes native support for custom firmware 5.00 M33-3 and a number of updates and improvements. Guess what it also has got in store for PSP Phat users? Infrared remote control learning! The site has been revamped by osgeld and is looking great.

Full release notes written by Ahman below:

It has been a long time since the last iR Shell public release. Osgeld of irshell.org admin has convinced me to make another release, so here it is. You can thank him for bringing me out of retirement.

Below is the list of new feature summary:
    - Support Dark_AleX latest 5.00M33-3 CFWs. Users of original 5.00M33 & M33-2 should upgrade to M33-3 to avoid incompatibility issues. The latest Popsloader 5.00 is also supported.
    - An Infra-Red learning remote is added for PSP Phat. You no longer need to hunt pronto codes for your appliances. Just point your remote unit at the PSP and it will learn the iR code. It is available under higher firmwares and not fw 1.5 mode. Refer to the Release Note for usage details.
    - The nethostfs connection handling has been redesigned to be more robust. However, iR Shell 4.7 and onwards can only connect to the new nethostfs PC server v2.1. Make sure you've updated the nethostfs PC server.
    - Enhance UMD/ISO game compatibility via nethostfs MAX mode. Most previous failed games will probably work.
    - Usbhostfs & nethostfs host redirection under XMB has returned.
    - The Adhoc PC connection for nethostfs was broken since fw 3.71. This feature has been brought back for PSP Phat.
    - Enhance the HTML Plugin (by Dark_AleX) to allow direct launching of flash games with extension SWF.

    Special thanks to:
    - Osgeld for spending so much effort in resurrecting irshell.org.
    - Dark_AleX for the M33 custom firmwares and his assistance to help adding popsloader support.
    - Tyranid and other developers in ps2dev.org for creating the pspsdk.
    - Osgeld, StoneCut, F34R and other moderators who keep irshell.org running and providing technical support to the community.
    - All iR Shell beta testers, donators, skins & plugin contributors.

    Credits:
    - M33 Custom firmware & popsloader are developed by Dark_AleX/M33.
    - remotejoy & usbhostfs are developed by Tyranid.
    - iR Shell bundled skins & plugins are developed by their corresponding authors.

Team M33, led by Dark_AleX, the developer behind the popular M33 custom firmwares, has released an updated popsloader plugin for its newest custom firmware, 3.80 M33.

This update fixes the sleep mode bug discovered in the previous plugin.

The popsloader's main purpose is well explained by saulin here.

    Installation:
Make sure you have 3.80 M33 with the M33-4 patch installed. Copy the containing seplugins folder to the top level of the memory stick. Enable the plugin in the recovery mode, and add the wanted pops files by following the description below.

List of files needed for each version:

    3.00-3.03: kd/popsman.prx, kd/meaudio.prx, kd/pops.prx, vsh/module/pafmini.prx
    3.10-3.30: kd/popsman.prx, kd/pops.prx, vsh/module/pafmini.prx
    3.40-3.72: kd/popsman.prx, kd/pops.prx, vsh/module/pafmini.prx, vsh/module/libpspvmc.prx

For example; for 3.72 pops to load, you must get the files mentioned for 3.72 above and rename them to popsman372.prx, pops372.prx, etc. Repeat for all wanted firmwares.

The files must be decrypted (use square in psardumper) from their full firmwares using the psardumper attached. PSP-Hacks.com has a good archive with all the PSP firmware updates. Put the EBOOT.PBP in the root/top level of the memory stick and run the decrypter. The decrypted files will lie on your memory stick when finished. Move them to /seplugins/popsloader/ and rename the files correctly. Hold R while booting a PSX game to bring up the popsloader menu.

Download the update below and comment. ...

MrTuto_Alek just gave word on IRC that a 1.50 kernel addon for 3.80 M33-2 now has been released by Team M33. Essentially, this lets you use 1.00/1.50 kernel homebrew on your new custom firmware like you can on earlier custom firmwares. Great news for PSP-1000 users indeed.

    Spread this awesome news

    Requirements:
A PSP-1000 (fat) with 3.80 M33-2 custom firmware installed. Official firmware will not be able to install this.

    Instructions:
    - Copy the files in the release to a directory called anything BUT UPDATE
    - Move the directory you created to /PSP/GAME/.
    - Get the Sony 1.50 update and copy it to the root with name "150.PBP"
    - Run the program and done.

    Download:
    1.50 firmware update.
    3.80 M33.
    3.80 M33-2 patch.

    Note:
This will not work on the newer PSP-2000 (slim).

Thanks to Exophase.com for the installation instructions.

A new build of the PSPTube application for PSP, 14/01/08, has today been released on the official website. It seems to fix a few important freeze bugs, and is a recommended update if you have previous versions installed.

PSPTube, with its smooth interface, lets you stream, and also save, media from various different websites, like YouTube, Dailymedia, Stage6, Veoh, NicoNico, and Onsen.

    Installation:
Make sure you have a custom firmware, such as 3.71 M33-4, installed, and put the PSPTube folder in /PSP/GAME3xx (replace xx with your firmware's version). It runs from the 3.xx kernel. Run it, and choose a network connection to connect to.

To use the login function in Dailymedia, open the configuration file in the archive and plot your user information in their respective places. This will allow you to view media you have to log in to view on a computer.

    Controls:
    Out of video:
Triangle: Display a menu with different options, such as saving videos.
Circle: Go back to the search panel.
Cross: Play the currently selected video.
Left trigger: Go back one page.
Right trigger: Go forward one page.
Select: Go to next video site search results.

    When playing a video:
Triangle: Show or hide the currently playing video's time information.
Circle: Stop playing video and go back to video search results.
Square: Go back to search results while video still is playing. Will split the screen in half if pressed twice.
    Left/right D-pad: Choose between 0.5x, 1x and 2x speed.
    Start: Pause the video.
    Select: Change screen size.

These are still beta builds, but they work extremely good.

Available for download below. Please give your comments on this build.

Thanks to Baboon for noticing it. ...

    Via Dark_AleX.

An update from the legendary Dark_AleX for his custom firmware, 3.71 M33, named 3.71 M33-2, was just recently released on DAX' website, and so was an update for the 1.50 kernel addon, which allows for 1.50 homebrew to be used on 3.71 M33 (only for PSP fat). They contain a number of fixes listed here:

    3.71 M33-2 changelog:

    - There was a bug that caused corruption when writing files of more than 32256 bytes using usb flash.
The bug has been corrected, and now the implementation is as reliable as it was when it was based on 1.50 kernel.
(tested with a full restauration of a dump)

    - Psp Slim: a functionality to let the charge of battery when connecting a usb cable has been added.
This feature is based on Noobz plugin code.
By default is not enabled, you can enable it in recovery.
Note that the charge of battery may be delayed some seconds since the moment you plug the cable.

    - After installing this update, program at /PSP/GAME/UPDATE will always be executed on 3.71 kernel, despite configuration.

    - VSHMenu: vshmenu will not be executed when onscreen keyboard is active, to avoid the lost of
the select button function in the keyboard.
An option to reset the psp has been added.

    Note about twi bugs remaining:

The WLAN network error, and the PSP Slim psx game change of brightness.
These two bugs are copyright of Sony happens too in OFW.

The WLAN network happens when there is no network available, so not a big problem.

    1.50 kernel addon v2 changelog:

    - When returning from sleep mode, 3.71 ipl was executed causing an inmediate crash. Fixed.
    - vsh plugins were being executed on recovery too Fixed

It is important that you read the full readme for installation instructions!

    Source: StrmnNrmn's blog

People have been a little impatient and worried about the sudden absence of the infamous Daedalus PSP developer StrmnNmrn, but no reason to worry; the developer just updated his blog, explaining it. Here you have the full post:

Apologies for the lack of updates. I've not had internet access at home since moving flat at the end of August. My ADSL was activated today so I'm finally up and running again. I can't believe how long it's taken!

Between the flat move and a busy few weeks at work (getting ready for the Tokyo Game Show) I've not had that much time to work on Daedalus, but I have made some progress on a really cool feature people have been asking for for some time, namely savestate support.

For those not familiar with savestates, the basic premise is very much like 'hibernate' or sleep modes on PCs and laptops. A savestate can be created at any point during emulation. At a later time the savestate can be reloaded to restore the emulator to the exact state it was in when the savestate was created.

What's really useful about savestates is that they work even if the underlying save mechanism used by a rom isn't supported properly. I'm hoping that by adding savestate support Daedalus will become significantly more usable for many roms. Savestates also make development a lot easier as it means I can jump straight into the middle of a game when debugging/profiling rather than sitting through the title sequence dozens of times.

I still have a little bit of work left to do on the savestate system, mostly on the UI side, but there are a number of additional optimisations I want to finish off before I release R13. I'm currently planning to get everything ready for release on either the weekend of the 29th Sept, or possibly the first weekend in October.

    Source: VG.no (translated by me).

Last weekend, it got known that the Norwegian electronic store chain, Expert, had sold some copies of the upcoming game Halo 3 a week and a half before the official release date.

The news spread around the world, and the lucky owners told everyone about the game content on various forums.

For Microsoft, this is a big crisis. They have tried as hard as they could to keep the game from being sold on beforehand, due to fear of the game's story and the game itself being leaked to the web before the release date 25 September in the USA and the day after in Europe.

Today, Microsoft wakes up to some really bad news:
    • A pirated copy of the game has been leaked to the Internet.
    • The whole Halo 3 ending video has been uploaded to YouTube.
    • Two copies of the game are being sold to the highest-bidding person on the Norwegian auction-service Finn.no.

It is not known where the pirate copy is from, but it looks to be an American (NTSC) version of the game. The YouTube video and the Finn.no copies, however, are most likely from the people who bought the game from Expert.

    - As far as we can see by looking at our store systems, the mistake has happened twice. One nearby Stavanger, and the other in Oslo, marked director of Expert, Trond Bentestuen, says to VG.

He says that between five and eight games have been sold from the store chain, and that it was caused by human mistake. He is now working to get the games back from their owners.

    - We are cooperating with Microsoft to get 110 percent control over the faults that have happened through our store chain. We strongly apologize what has happened, Bentestuen says.

    - Are you considering to purchase the copies of the game that have been put out for sale on Finn?

    - It is not impossible we might. We absolutely do whatever we can, Bentestuen says, while also making it clear that the customers that bought the game, have done nothing illegal.

    - Will the case have consequences for those that sold the game?

    - We are debating it. We first have to find out whether it was caused because they didn't know, or if they did it on purpose, Bentestuen says.

PS: Microsoft still hasn't answered our query for a comment on the case.

    -----

Over at the site ITavisen, they can also confirm that Expert has made a deal with the two persons selling the game on Finn. ITavisen is also informed that more than five copies have been sold, but exactly how many is unknown.

Bentestuen makes it clear that the pirated version leaked to the web, does not come from the Expert-sale.

Readers, please do not post any links to neither the YouTube video with the ending without spoiler marking it, nor to the pirated version of the game!

Source: NRK Spiller (translated by me).

Halo 3, the most hyped game of the year, should not be on the market before 26 September. But a Norwegian store was the first in the world to sell it.

Marked and communications chief of Expert, Trond Bentestuen, tells Spiller.no that five copies of the game have been sold from an Expert store in Stavanger.

    - We're in dialog with the customers that have bought the game, Bentestuen says. This is to make sure that the customers that bought the game keep it to themselves. We're sure these are serious gamers that won't do anything silly. Bentestuen says that Expert does not have the right to crave the games back.

Expert does not want to tell who the lucky owners are. - The five Halo 3-copies were sold by mistake. We have now gone through the routines to make sure this won't happen again in other Expert stores.

Bentestuen says that when games arrive so long before the release date, they have the responsibility of keeping them from being sold. But this time the routines failed. Microsoft does not wish to comment the case to Spiller.no.

On the Norwegian IT site, ITavisen's forums, one of the lucky owners commented this on Saturday (translated, so all rights reserved):
I couldn't believe my own eyes. Ahead of me in the games section of Expert was Halo 3. I equipped my VISA card, and went straight home to try it. From what I can see, Expert has now stopped selling the game after what was a mistake from their side. I run through it with a friend yesterday, but I won't spoil the ending.

In addition to that, another person by the nick of MOCAMBO who has got their hands on Halo 3, has posted more pictures (including spoilers, so beware!) on the Halo Fans Forums here. ...
