    via IGN,

During its recent Ubidays event in Paris, Ubisoft announced that it would be publishing the much-discussed, but still mysterious Beowulf game based on the upcoming movie of the same name. The epic poem was adapted to the screen by Roger Avary and noted author Neil Gaiman. Robert Zemeckis is slated to direct.

"Ubisoft is excited to be partnering with Paramount Pictures and Shangri-La, and the creative teams at ImageMovers, to leverage the 'Beowulf' movie assets and storylines and extend them into the interactive video game universe," said Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft. "Ubisoft has quickly become an industry leader in creating high-quality movie-based video games that deliver a compelling experience to both casual and hardcore gamers alike."

"'Beowulf' is particularly well-suited for the video game format," added Robert Zemeckis. "Not only does the film have a compelling story and strong visual style that will translate well into a game, but because the film is entirely digital, we are able to share our assets with Ubisoft. Audiences will be able to make a seamless transition between the film and the game."

The Beowulf film features a star-studded cast of Hollywood elite, including Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, and Angelina Jolie. Although no details about their videogame likenesses was provided at this time, the shared assets should provide for a cast of characters that look a whole lot like their feature film counterparts.

The game is expected to hit stores in time for the movie's planned release in November of this year. ...

    via IGN,

Those looking for their next puzzling fix on DS can rejoice: Nintendo has announced it's bringing Puzzle League DS - known as Panel de Pon in Japan - to Europe on June 29.

Panel de Pon has had several names through the years (Pokémon Puzzle League, Tetris Attack) but although the name may change, the highly addictive and fantastic block-based puzzle gameplay always remains the same.

For those still unaware of its charms, you move coloured blocks left and right to form a line or column of three or more same-coloured blocks. In classic puzzle tradition, the squares then vanish with a satisfying 'pop'. As you advance, you can line up combos of block popping so that, as one set of squares disappears, more blocks drop down to form new lines - which then also vanish.

This new Panel de Pon features more modes than ever before and you can test your skills against time attacks, avalanche attacks, matches with the computer and Daily Play which, rather like Picross DS, gives you a set of regular challenges to tackle.

Meanwhile, if you like to pit your wits against human opponents, Puzzle League DS features an online multiplayer mode that sees players racing to clear the most blocks, using special attack items to hinder the progress of foes.

If all this wasn't exciting enough, Nintendo has also revealed that Puzzle League DS is launching for the bargain price of Ł20 (around 29 Euros).

    via IGN,

Today Gamecock announced a few details on its upcoming bug noir game Insecticide, scheduled for release on PC and Nintendo DS this holiday season. The first offering from developer Crackpot Entertainment, Insecticide takes place in a futuristic city where insects have become the dominant species and is inspired by gumshoe detective films.

Gameplay borrows from both classic adventure titles and action games. Players will have to piece together clues to unravel a mystery and catch its culprit. Crackpot is taking advantage of the unique input options of both the PC and DS to allow for "precise navigation" of the game's environments and control of each character's special abilities.

Six legs and a six shooter.

"The heart of classic detective novels and movies is to get the audience involved mentally, but now via PC and the Nintendo DS we can get players involved in a much more tactile arena," said Rick Stults, Console Chief for Gamecock Media Group. "The mouse and the stylus are the key to the 'touch and feel' experience we're really aiming for with this game and I think that's something players are really going to enjoy."

The environments of the DS version will be realized in full 3D. The handheld version will also feature a multiplayer co-op mode.

The PSP's Remote Play function is also set to be improved thanks to the firmware update and PSP owners can now access their PS3 from anywhere in the world - as long as they have a broadband connection and firmware 3.50 for the PSP, which is available at the end of May.

Finally, firmware 1.80 includes the ability to print photo images stored on PS3's hard disk drive or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers via the USB connection. ...

Did that updated Final Fantasy XIII trailer (you know, the one you weren't able to see because filming was not allowed) from the Square Enix Party get you even more excited about Japan's most anticipated PS3 title? Well don't start saving your cash just yet, as there's going to be quite the wait before you actually get to play it.

Fielding questions at a Square Enix financial briefing in Tokyo today, president Yoichi Wada said this about Final Fantasy XIII: "It will still take a bit more time. At the very least, [a release] this fiscal year is definitely out of the question."

Japanese is known for being a pretty vague language, but Wada's words were pretty clear. No FFXIII in Japan until some time after March 2008.

Let's hope Square Enix starts the translation before development finishes up. ...

    via IGN,

The latest ESRB ratings have come in, and, much to our chagrin, only one new Virtual Console title got the rating treatment. In the past, these ESRB updates would come with several newly-rated classic games that were likely to make it to Nintendo's download service, but it seems like Nintendo may have accumulated a backlog of already-rated games.

Below is the one newly-rated Virtual Console title:

    ESRB Ratings for 5/22/07

Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos

We have enjoyed the hell out of the VC version of the original game, so needless to say we're anticipating this one. It's always good to see more Tecmo loving on the Wii. Strong sales of VC titles may very well lead to future installments in franchises such as this on the Wii.

We'll keep you updated with the latest in ESRB ratings, so be sure to check IGN Wii frequently for the next batch. ...

    via IGN,

According to hints in the latest issue of Nintendo Power, Super Paper Mario is no longer the only way to get your fill of Mario's paper-thin RPG antics on the Wii. That's right, the N64 hit, Paper Mario, may be getting the Virtual Console treatment sometime in the near future.

The official Nintendo mag had a brief preview of the N64 classic in the Wii Channels section of its July issue. The magazine listed the game as its 'top pick' among upcoming Virtual Console games, hinting at its impending release. No specific details were given regarding whether or not we can actually expect this game to come any time soon. We're pretty sure that we will see the title hit Nintendo's service sometime in the near future, as Nintendo is likely to try and ride the wave of accolades and positive press that Super Paper Mario is enjoying right now on the Wii, but nothing is set in stone at this point.

We've always been huge fans of Mario's flattened out adventures, so this comes as pretty great news to us. We'll keep you posted as any firm details surface. ...
