    FIFA 21 was unsurprisingly the biggest game across Europe, Middle East, parts of Asia and Africa during October, according to the latest GSD charts.
    The football game was comfortably the biggest selling title of the month. Digital and physical FIFA sales are down about 9.4% for the first four weeks compared with last year's FIFA 20, however, it's worth noting that this is a console transition year, with an updated version of the game set for December.
    No.2 belonged to another EA game in the form of Star Wars: Squadrons, which narrowly beat out Activision's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, which had to settle for third spot.
    Despite launching right at the end of the month, the fourth biggest selling game of October across the regions was Watch Dogs: Legion from Ubisoft.
    The next highest charting new game is Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit at No.18. The Nintendo Switch game was only available in a box as it requires a remote control kart to play. Meanwhile, the new Dark Pictures game, Little Hope, just misses out on the Top 20 at No.22. The game was released right at the end of the month in time for Halloween.
    September's No.1 game, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, drops down to No.7. Meanwhile, Company of Heroes 2 re-enters the charts at No.8. The strategy game was part of a Sega promotion during October to celebrate the publisher's 60th anniversary.
    In terms of games hardware, just under 750,000 games consoles were sold across the EMEAA region. That is a drop on the 795,000 consoles sold during October 2019, although that's due to a significant drop in performance for PS4 and Xbox One - which is to be expected with the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in November.
    Unsurprisingly, Nintendo Switch remains the dominant platform by quite some margin. Switch console sales are up by almost 77% in October 2020 compared with the same period last year.
    Elsewhere, over 4.3 million accessories, points cards and toys-to-life products were sold across EMEAA during October, driven heavily by PlayStation Store wallet cards (followed by Xbox Live Gift Cards). The highest charting accessory was the DualShock 4 controller for PS4 at No.3.
    The performance is a slight drop on the 4.5 million accessories, points cards and toys-to-life products sold in October 2019. But again, we should expect to see some drops in these areas ahead of the launch of new consoles.
    In terms of just accessories (so headsets, controllers and cases), sales are actually up slightly, from 2.1 million in October 2019 to 2.2 million last month.

    Luigi's Mansion 3 failed to unseat Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in the EMEAA charts, which remained the No.1 game in terms of retail, digital and combined sales.
    Modern Warfare stormed to the top last week, though it could be argued that The Outer Worlds, MediEvil and the notoriously buggy WWE 2K20 didn't amount to serious competition.
    Luigi's Mansion 3 is another matter. It is one of the most significant Switch exclusives of the year, behind the clear favourite Pok?mon Sword and Shield. However, despite the pedigree and the captive audience on Nintendo's console, it only finished second in the combined physical and digital sales chart.
    Call of Duty remained top of every single chart provided by ISFE GSD: physical, digital and combined, in terms of both units sold and money earned.
    The only other new entry in the combined EMEAA chart was Nighthawk Interactive's Disney Classic Games: Aladdin + The Lion King, which made it to 14th place.

    60% of European gamers surveyed in a recent study say they're unlikely to buy a games console that does not play physical discs.
    The data comes from the latest research conducted by ISFE and Ipsos MORI's GameTrack survey, on behalf of GamesIndustry.biz. The data covers UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
    Gamers have been increasingly downloading major releases over buying them in boxes. In June, digital games data tracker GSD revealed to us that (during Q1 this year) some markets are now more than 50% digital for AAA releases such as Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, Star Wars, Call of Duty, Tom Clancy and Red Dead Redemption.
    The UK was 56% digital for these titles, France was 47% digital, Germany (including Switzerland and Austria) was 50% digital, Spain (plus Portugal) was 35% and Italy was 33%.
    Interestingly, the data loosely matches up with the interest in a digital-only games console. According to Ipsos MORI's survey results, 17% of UK gamers would be likely to buy a digital-only machine, French players are 12% likely, German fans are 11% likely, while Spain and Italy are both 6% likely to buy a device like Microsoft's Xbox One S All-Digital.

    Unsurprisingly, FIFA 20 has topped the UK boxed charts in its first week on sale.
    It is comfortably the biggest release of the year, although physical launch sales are down slightly compared with FIFA 19 (a drop of 7% year-on-year).
    The PS4 version of the game accounted for 61% of the sales, with the Xbox One edition accounting for 38%. The Nintendo Switch 'Legacy' version accounted for 1% of sales.
    The PS4 physical version attracted fewer sales this year, with both the Xbox One and Switch versions enjoying a slight increase in sales.
    The Xbox One version was boosted by a special hardware bundle available from GAME, Amazon and the Microsoft store. The All-Digital Xbox One S was bundled with FIFA 20, Minecraft, Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 3 for £169.99. This meant that Sea of Thieves rose from No.21 to No.7 (up 199%), Minecraft on Xbox rose from No.22 to No.9 (up 197%) and Forza Horizon 3 increased 183% and is at No.10.
    This all shows the impact a major release like FIFA can have on console sales and the performance of other titles.
    Outside of FIFA 20, the next big release was Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age. The Square Enix game debuts on Switch at No.11 and arrives almost a year after the PS4 version (selling about half of what that version managed in its first week).
    Meanwhile, Bandai Namco's Code Vein reached No.13 and Focus Home Interactive's The Surge 2 came in at No.35.
    Last week's No.1, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, drops to No.2 with a 62% fall in sales week-on-week. Borderlands 3 tumbles from No.2 to No.3 with a 45% sales dip. Gears 5 holds firm at No.4 with a 70% increase in sales (the game also benefitted from a hardware bundle). Rounding off the Top Five is Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled. The Activision game rose 74% in sales due to some price activity at UK retail.

    NBA 2K20 enjoyed a strong launch week, topping the European charts for combined digital and retail.
    Despite attracting criticism for its aggressive monetisation -- complete with overwhelmingly negative Steam user reviews -- consumers' thirst for the annual basketball title appears unaffected.
    Also a new entry in the latest charts is a remaster of the 1999 meme-factory Final Fantasy VIII, which came in at No. 2.
    Meanwhile, Rainbow Six Siege continues to have a strong presence in the charts, four years after its release, coming in at No. 3. The latest charts place it at No. 3 the week prior too, but previous charts had Switch-exclusive Astral Chain in that spot. This is because Ubisoft's data was incomplete when the charts were originally posted.
    Spyro Reignited Trilogy returns to the charts once again, climbing from No. 66 to No. 4, helped along by the recent PC release.
    Then, reliable as the tide itself, Grand Theft Auto V continues its chart omnipresence. Though down a few spots from the week prior, it still sits happily at No. 5.
    Supermassive Games' interactive horror movie The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan, has slipped from No. 1 the week prior to No. 6, still resonating with consumers despite more lacklustre reviews than its predecessor, Until Dawn.
    Gears 5 -- one of two AAA exclusives published by Microsoft this year -- has snuck into the charts at No. 7. While this could be considered a lacking performance from an Xbox tentpole release in launch week, the numbers are no doubt impacted by the title's inclusion in the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, meaning it's impossible to tell how popular the game is without figures directly from Microsoft.
    Spurred on by huge sales in digital, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration has squirmed its way into the combined charts, coming in at No. 8, up from No. 314 previously.
    Another new release breaking into the charts is Catherine: Full Body. The PlayStation 4 exclusive performed notably better at retail than digital.
    Finally, Red Dead Redemption 2 rounds out the charts, up four places from the week previous, to place at No. 10.

    A big Steam summer sale and a week of big new releases has toppled most of the usual contenders at the top of this week's EMEAA regional charts.
    Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled stayed at the top despite multiple new releases this week, including Super Mario Maker 2, F1 2019, and Judgment. However, it's worth noting that Nintendo doesn't share data on digital sales, meaning Super Mario Maker's second-place position is solely based on its physical sales.
    F1 2019 debuted at No.3, and Judgment landed solidly at No.5 despite being a PS4-exclusive.
    The Steam Summer Sale is going on at the moment, which is affecting the digital chart especially and boosting some older titles. Most noticeable is Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, which bumped up to No.7 following a 90% discount on the storefront. There are also big leaps for South Park: The Fractured But Whole (No.226 to No.11) and Two Point Hospital (No.470 to No.13).
    Looking at the digital charts alone, games like Monster Hunter: World (No.8), Uno (No.9), and Cities: Skylines (No. 10) also had strong weeks - there are a number of others further down benefitting from deep discounts including Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Dark Souls: Remastered, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, all of which went from far lower on the digital charts to the top 20 this week, and all of which did so on the heels of a Steam discount.

    Super Mario Maker 2 retains No.1 for a second consecutive week as Nintendo Switch games impress across the UK Top 40.
    The game's No.1 performance is strong, with just a 47% fall in sales from its first week. The title keeps itself ahead of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, which drops 45% in its third week in the charts (but holds second place).
    F1 2019 maintains No.3 (despite a 57% fall in sales week-on-week), while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues its rise up the charts, moving from No.4 to No.5 with a 9% increase in sales week-on-week (that's three racing games in the Top Five).
    No.5 is another Switch fast climber, with Super Smash Bros Ultimate jumping five places after a 21% increase in sales performance. The fourth Switch game in the Top Ten is a return for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which makes No.9... despite sales actually falling 9%.
    Further down the charts, Super Mario Party (+1%), Super Mario Odyssey (+14%), New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe (-11%) and Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu (-1%) all rose up the charts, although some of those titles did drop slightly in sales. Broadly, handheld games tend to be more resilient in the summer months when game sales take tumble, with consumers picking up portable devices to play on their summer breaks.
    Physical sales for Xbox One and PS4 games are quite slow at this time of year, and as a result some simple pricing activity and promotion can make a major difference to some chart placings. Mortal Kombat 11 has jumped 14 places to No.10 following a 32% sales bump, whereas Minecraft has jumped from No.22 to No.13 thanks to just a 6% sales improvement.
    FIFA 19 is also on the brink of a Top Ten return following its drop to No.20 this week, with a 14% rise in sales week-on-week (up to No.11).
    Last week's new games took quite a sharp drop. The Sinking City sunk from No.37 to No.12 after a 60% drop in sales in its second week (which in itself isn't a terrible performance). While Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, buoyed last week by the Switch version, fell from No.9 to No.34 with a 62% drop in sales.

    A new study has found that a majority of gamers are interested in using streaming services like Stadia or Xbox's Project xCloud -- but some will be unable to use them.
    The news comes from a study conducted by Broadband Genie and our sister site Eurogamer, which found 83% of 3,142 people were keen on playing games via streaming.
    Of these Eurogamer readers, only 21% were "absolutely" interested, while another 17% would "probably" use such a service. A further 17% expressed no interest, leaving 45% potentially interested depending on a number of factors.
    Looking into those factors, the most common (71%) was concern that performance or visual quality might be compromised by the reliance on a solid internet connection. 34% said they prefer a tangible product, while 26% doubted their broadband would be able to handle such a service.
    Just shy of half the people surveyed reported they were on fibre optic connections, with a further 22% specifically on Virgin Media fibre. However, 20% of people were still on ADSL broadband, with a further 2% reliant on 4G.
    Google has previously said players will be best served on Stadia with a 35 Mbps connection, which will deliver 4K streaming at 60 frames per second. The minimum requirement is 10 Mbps for 1080p resolution, with Google warning this will be scaled down to 720p on slower connections.
    ADSL broadband averages at around 10 MBps, although they can often fall below this, depending on how many devices and users are using yur connection at the time. This means players would be unable to experience Stadia as its minimum setting unless they upgrade to fibre optic.

    Following E3 2019's annual deluge of game announcements, NPD analyst Mat Piscatella has outlined his predictions for game sales in 2019, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare as the year's top seller and Nintendo as best-selling publisher.
    In a blog post, Piscatella outlined his takeaways from the show's major exhibitors. Despite E3's seemingly heavy focus on streaming and subscription services, he feels the audience was left with more questions than answers, and doesn't see Stadia or Project xCloud making a significant market impact in 2019. However, he predicts xCloud will have an impact on ongoing Xbox hardware sales and Game Pass subscriptions.
    "Nintendo Switch is the most important piece of video game hardware in the market right now," he says of Nintendo's presentation, saying he expects its hardware sales to continue in strength and for Nintendo to wrap up the year as the best-selling publisher, with sales driven largely by Pokemon Sword & Shield (which launch in November).
    Overall, Piscatella sees a stronger-than-usual line-up for the "transition year" between console generations, though with no major end-of-year release akin to 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2, a number of other titles could slip into the top 10 unexpectedly.
