Microsoft has announced it is to widen the availability of both its Surface tablet devices by introducing them to new markets.
The firm highlighted that both the Surface RT and Pro would be available in both the UK and additional countries "in coming months," with a roll-out set to begin around "late March."
Expansion of the Surface Pro will see the device make its way to the UK in addition to Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, China and Hong Kong.
Microsoft's decision to widen the device's availability comes at an interesting time, as the Surface Pro continues to suffer supply issues in the US and Canada, with the 128GB edition of the device recently selling out for the second time since its launch.
The device was even late for its debut in the US; with Microsoft initially stating the Pro would launch 90 days after the release of the standard RT Surface. However, the Surface Pro didn't emerge until well over 100 days after the original Surface became available.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is boosting the availability of the Surface RT tablet by releasing the device to countries including Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, New Zealand, Russia and Mexico.
Success of the device sales-wise remains uncertain given the stock shortage of certain models of the Surface and the constant addition of new markets.
However, Microsoft is set to face greater competition as gaming manufacturer recently made its dedicated games tablet, the Razer Edge, available for pre-order.
Despite the Surface's label as the tablet for professionals, both devices offer similar specifications and the Pro edition of the Surface has even been proven to be a capable gaming device.
With both devices carrying price tags of close to the $1,000 mark, it will be interesting to see which of the devices comes out on top.
If Razer can effectively capture the gaming market, whilst avoiding the stock shortages the Surface has experience, it may very well take the edge – with, the uhm, Edge.

Reports indicate that Lucasart's highly anticipated next-gen title Star Wars 1313 has been halted following last year's acquisition by Disney.
Kotaku has received word from three different sources, all of which claim that development of the game is on hiatus. However, LucasArts has remains adamant that work on the title is on-going.
It is believed that following Disney's buyout of the Star Wars franchise, the brand has developed concerns over the title, particularly surrounding the title's failure to tie-in with the new Star Wars films, which were recently announced by Disney.
Initially revealed at last year's E3 expo in Los Angeles, Star Wars 1313 had already undergone significant revisions, with the game originally pegged as an open-world title, similar to fan-favourite Knights of the Old Republic.
However, budgetary concerns in 2010 saw the title scaled back, whilst the game saw a complete writing overhaul following the cancellation of the associated TV series.
Despite George Lucas himself reportedly sharing his excitement over the planned title, new owners Disney are believed to be not so enthusiastic towards releasing a game with no association to the new fins.
Given how impressive the game's unveiling at last year's E3 was, Star Wars fans and gamers alike will be hoping some from of deal can be reached in order for the title to reach its release.

EA studio Victory Games plans to create completely new Command & Conquer fictions.
While the studio's debut project will be set in the Generals universe and subsequent games will revisit the Tiberium and Red Alert, Victory's long term plan for the RTS franchise includes exploring fresh C&C universes.Tim Morten, senior development director for the C&C franchise, told CVG: "The Generals universe is where we've started, it was the universe most often requested by fans and also one that we haven't been back to for a long time."Over time we're planning to add factions to that universe and explore the Tiberium universe, the Red Alert universe, and then get into completely new fictions, so it's very exciting for us, it's kind of a starting point for a whole new C&C."In December 2011 EA announced that the next game in the long-running series would beCommand & Conquer: Generals 2, and would be powered by DICE's Frostbite 2 engine. The game's name was later switched to simply Command & Conquer and it was confirmed that it would be a free-to-play title targeted for release on PC later this year, a decade after the original Generals game launched.Morten said: "You mentioned some of the changes that have occurred over the course of our development and I'll say from a developer's perspective it has been a very fortuitous set of circumstances."We've got a new group of people, including some veterans of past series, but we've really got some fresh blood on the team, we've got a brand new engine, and it has taken time for everybody to walk through the mechanics of RTS on Frostbite and to really come up with the ideas that we feel are going to be critical to defining this next Command & Conquer. That history of changes has actually given us the space and time to focus on the gameplay so I think it has had a very positive impact on the product."
First HD in-game screenshot features the Global Liberation Army
Morten also said the series is to be supported by a new live service that will enable Victory Games to experiment with fresh game modes."We've put a lot of effort into building the back end that's going to accommodate this title and future titles in the series. It's a way for us to distribute content to consumers easily and to learn from them by collecting data about what content is and isn't working, and also to really integrate their social experience."The live service means that instead of trying to get everything done day one, you know, deadline is here and it has got to go in a box, we instead start with the core, make that as good as we can, and then add to that over time, so it's a really powerful paradigm shift in the way we build the game."By the nature of being a live service we've got the ability both to try brief experiments, such as trying out a new game mode one weekend and finding out what people think about it, and to roll out things that we've been cooking up over a long period of time. An example is something we're tentatively calling Domination, which is sort of an adaptation of Capture the Flag to real time strategy."There have been some efforts at this in other RTS games including past C&Cs, but our design team kind of incubates the idea, we test it internally, we roll it out to QA and closed beta testers, and eventually try it with an open audience. With a boxed product you could never do that, you'd have to get it right on day one for the launch, but with a live service we can put it out for people to give us their feedback and tune it on the basis of that."On the subject of whether the game will feature a single player component, as has been requested by fans, Morten said:

After whetting our appetite at CES, Samsung's updated Series 7 Chronos is slowly squeaking its way into US retailers. Spotted at Best Buy for $1,200, this 21mm dynamo packs a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 3635QM CPU and an AMD Radeon HD 8870M GPU along with a 15.6-inch touchscreen. While this lean, mean, Windows 8 machine's streamlined design and spec sheet are impressive, such adornment comes at a price. Absent from the Chronos' fine engineering is room for an optical drive, so DVD and Blu-ray enthusiasts be warned. However, should this caveat not apply to you, then by all means you have our blessings to check out Sammy's new up-and-comer.

A new graphics card standard has been set and will be found lurking in the PCs of millionaires everywhere from later this month.
Nvidia has lifted the lid on its first consumer card based on its GK110 Nvidia Kepler design that can be found in the Titan supercomputer cluster. Which is perhaps why it has what can safely be described as “a pretty high RRP” – £827, to be exact.
But if that won’t make a big enough dent on the family gold reserves, Nvidia says you can join three of the cards together via SLI for a £2,481 super setup that allows gamers to “max out every visual setting without fear of a meltdown while playing any of the most demanding PC gaming titles”.
The specs are indeed impressive, although the highlight has to be the inclusion of “high efficiency vapor chamber cooling”. Or arguably the 2,668 GPU cores.
“GeForce GTX TITAN is a beast of a GPU – and the only one in the world powerful enough to play any game at any resolution at any time,” GeForce general manager Scott Herkelman stated.
“And, yet, all of this immense power is housed in a sleek, sexy design, so gamers can also build beautifully-designed PC gaming machines about the size of a gaming console, yet magnitudes more powerful and always upgradeable.”
The GeForce GTX Titan will be available from February 25th.

Linux kernel 3.8 has been released. This release includes support in Ext4 for embedding very small files in the inode, which greatly improves the performance for these files and saves some disk space. There is also a new Btrfs feature that allows for quick disk replacement, a new filesystem F2FS optimized for SSDs; support for filesystem mount, UTS, IPC, PID, and network namespaces for unprivileged users; accounting of kernel memory in the memory resource controller; journal checksums in XFS; an improved NUMA policy redesign; and, of course, the removal of support for 386 processors. Many small features and new drivers and fixes are also available. Here's the full list of changes

The still unannounced next generation of consoles won’t be able to compete with today’s modern gaming PCs when it comes to raw power.
That’s according to Crytek boss Cevat Yerli, who toldEurogamer that: "Without breaking NDAs that are in place, realistically, from purely a price point perspective, it is impossible.
"It's impossible to package $2000-3000 into a mainstream, let's say $500 console. I'm not saying they are $500 consoles. They may launch a console at $2000, but the consumer pricing is usually much lower than that.
"So, given consumer pricing, and given the cost of production of a gamer PC and the amount of watt of power it needs, which is like a fridge, it's impossible."
Yerli also added that Crysis 3 will return to the template laid down by the original Crysis by pushing gaming PC tech to its limits.
The 2007 title was notorious for pushing the requirements needed to squeeze out its gorgeous maximum settings. However, 2011’s Crysis 2 reined this in as the studio focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3 releases.
PC gamers made their displeasure known – and Crytek has heard loud and clear.
"This time around the consoles couldn't gain much more," Yerli added. "It was like a five per cent or ten per cent gain. That's it. But the PC version, because the specs are now much more evolved, this is two years later, effectively, this is two generations of PCs we could leverage and DirectX 11 is fully rolled out, so now we could really push it.
"I made a joke at one point saying, 'we're going to melt PCs,' and I think we are going to melt PCs again. People want that, and we'll deliver that.
"With Crysis 2 we tried to make the spec available to as many PC gamers as possible. Then we heard back from the loudest group, which was enthusiast PC gamers, 'our PCs are running this game at 200 frames. What the hell? We should be running at 30 frames'.
"Our graphics programmers said, 'we're going to give them a game they can't run any more’.”
