British chip boffins ARM announced the availability of a quad core processor dubbed the Cortex A15 MP4, designed to run at up to 2Ghz and likely being targeted at upcoming Windows RT devices.
ARM described the release as a "hard macro implementation" which means that the design is more easily able to be integrated right into chips produced by third-party designers. The design is based on TSMC's 28nm process.
"This new Cortex-A15 hard macro is an important addition to our portfolio and will enable a wider array of partners to leverage the outstanding capabilities of the Cortex-A15 processor," said ARM processor marketing chief Jim Nicholas.
The company reckons that the Cortex-A15 draws no more power than the Cortex-A9, the design in most high-end smartphones today, while delivering performance in excess of 20,000DMIPS at 2GHz.
Chipmakers have already been working on integrating the Cortex-A15 but the 'hard macro' offering is essentially something more pre-packed which makes it even more likely that ARM's top shelf processor will end up in mobile devices.
The bottom line is that it's this type of chip that will go head to head against Intel's Ivy bridge parts as the CPU architecture war plays out in Windows 8 tablets and notebooks later this year.

Microsoft aiming to simplify OS after years of complexity.
The firm has said in a blog that the next version of its desktop operating system will come as Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT.
The latter replaces “Windows on ARM or WOA” and “will only be available pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors.”

This simplification runs counter to the Microsoft tradition, which has been to fragment its products into numerous different flavours.

But the re-think represents yet another way in which Microsoft is seeking to position the new OS as the biggest change to Windows since it launched Win 95 in, er, 1995.
The new software borrows heavily from WinPho, in that it features live tiles, swiping and other elements of the phone OS. In this sense, it's part of a wider trend for computer OSs to be designed such that they can run across many splintering form factors - phones, tablets, in-car, PC, TV.
It can now be downloaded in beta now, ahead of its summer launch. 3m developers have already done so.

Platform accounts for 15 per cent of the total time users spend watching full-length shows.
Media network Viacom surveyed Americans aged between eight and 54 to achieve the data. While tablets lead the mobile market for full-length TV show viewing, the devices have also become the second choice overall for show viewing, trailing behind TV itself.
The rise of tablet streaming use has come at the expense of desktop PCs and smartphone, which have both declined.
Interestingly, tablet users view comedy and music the most, which are genres favoured by desktop users, while reality, drama and sci-fi are the most viewed choices on TV.
Colleen Fahey Rush, exec VP and chief research officer, Viacom, said: "We found that the tablet is a jack of many trades - it offers video and social experiences, it's a source of information and it's portable."
Results also show that tablets make 50 per cent of users feel happy and relaxed and 49 per cent said the tablets are effective for life management.

Just last week, we reported the unveiling of Samsung's dual-core powered Galaxy Tab 2 devices, with 10.1-inch and seven-inch options in the works.
Now, a 'Samsung insider' claims the firm has stopped production of the 10.1-inch model in order to upgrade its dual-core processor to a quad-core version, according to netbooknews.
However, chip specifics are unknown, while it's thought that America may not get the power upgrade, simply receiving the dual-core option as originally planned.
Seemingly, the seven-inch version will retain its original dual-core processor. This is presumably so that Samsung can still retail the device at $249.99 to cover the low end tablet market, a space that the firm still doesn't have any traction in.

Scientists, engineers and software developers are always looking for innovative ways to accelerate applications and shorten computational cycles. SoftLayer is looking to help them out by offering a new HPC cloud-based solution consisting of dedicated servers leveraging the latest GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) cards from Nvidia.

SoftLayer’s new offering provides an on-demand, consumptive billing model for High-Performance Computing (HPC) users looking to meet the most compute intensive environments. These environments include traditional HPC fields such as data mining, numerical and seismic analysis as well advertising agencies and web design shops looking to develop interactive games, applications and 3D content.

“Using GPUs for running applications is an emerging trend in HPC today. Computing requirements continue to skyrocket but users remain as demanding as ever. They want capacity on-demand and prefer to pay only for what they use. It is incumbent on hosters to deliver this capacity in a cloud-like fashion if they want to break into this market,” said Philbert Shih, Managing Director, Structure Research Ltd. “Giving people the ability to scale GPU resources adds incredible flexibility in the way research, engineering and development projects are conducted. By putting such raw computational power into a user’s hands, in an easy pay as you go model, the focus is on research results not acquiring or maintaining the latest technology.”

SoftLayer’s new HPC hosting solution consists of dual-processor Intel E5-2600 (Sandy Bridge) based servers supporting one or two Nvidia Tesla M2090 GPUs. GPUs work in conjunction with the server’s CPU to accelerate application and processing performance. The GPU will offload compute intensive portions of the application from the CPU to accelerate overall performance of the machine, dramatically boosting application performance by running in tandem with the CPU. As a result, SoftLayer users will see a massive performance boost and HPC applications accelerated by as much as ten times.

“We are offering breakthrough performance in a unique delivery model,” said Duke Skarda, Chief Technology Officer of SoftLayer. “The beauty of this solution is the way users can break down to toughest computational problems and largest blocks of data to work them in parallel over our network driving quicker results. GPU technology is still in its infancy but customer demand continues to soar as more and more HPC applications get migrated over to cloud infrastructures.”

“Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers like SoftLayer are pushing the technological envelope by making the latest technology accessible and scalable through a cloud offering,” said Sumit Gupta, General Manager of Tesla HPC at Nvidia. “This technology is all about performance without compromise and we found a partner in SoftLayer committed to enabling cloud computing services that enable GPU computing from anywhere around the world.”

    Key features and benefits:

    • Cost effective HPC (ideal for scientific and technical computing)
    • Massive compute performance increase while accelerating application speeds by up to 10x
    • Cluster management and GPU monitoring
    • Parallel compute environment operates invisibly to the user
    • GPUs specifically designed to work as computational accelerators

Hot on the heels of the most successful storage mediums of all time — MiniDisc and Zip disks — Sony has announced the Optical Disc Archive, a system that seems to cram up to 30 Blu-ray discs into a single, one-inch-thick plastic cassette, which will have a capacity of between 300GB and 1.5TB. As far as I can tell, the main selling point of the Optical Disc Archive is, just like MiniDisc, the ruggedness of the cassettes. Optical discs themselves are fairly resistant to changes in temperature and humidity, and the cassettes are dust and water resistant. What is the use case for these 1.5TB MiniDiscs, though? In terms of pure storage capacity, tape drives are still far superior (you can store up to 5TB on a tape!) In terms of speed and flexibility, hard drives are better. If you're looking for ruggedness, flash-based storage is smaller, lighter, and can easily survive a dip in the ocean. The Optical Disc Archive might be good as extensible storage for TV PVRs, like TiVo and Sky+ — but as yet, we don't even know the cost of the system or the cassettes, and I doubt either will be cheap.

Veteran developer believes realization of Sci-fi tech possible in 3-5 years

Valve's Michael Abrash has revealed that he is developing prototype 'wearable computing' hardware in a blog post on the company website.
"By 'wearable computing' I mean mobile computing where both computer-generated graphics and the real world are seamlessly overlaid in your view," he said, "there is no separate display that you hold in your hands (think Terminator vision)."

Citing enhanced demand for "computing available in more places", Abrash, a veteran of the original Doom and Quake, thinks this is "the most valuable thing I could do at Valve."
"It all started with Snow Crash," he said, refering to Niel Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel.
In Snow Crash, much of the action takes place in the 'metaverse'; a virtual reality successor to the internet, in which those who use physical access points are stigmatized.
