Assuming it successfully clears all of the regulatory hurdles that govern these types of deals, Sony's $380 million acquisition of Gaikai (and the mysterious cloud gaming service borne from said purchase) may eventually benefit the electronics megalith's non-dedicated-yet-gaming-capable devices like cell phones, internet-connected televisions and Blu-Ray players, waffle irons, etc.

Migrating Gaikai's capabilities to those devices is "absolutely within the frame," according to Sony Computer Entertainment president/CEO Andrew House, speaking with the Wall Street Journal. "It's recognition on Sony's part that the cloud and cloud streaming technologies are going to have profound and possibly a very positive impact on not only our game business, but also in the way our consumers interact with and obtain content in general."

Of course, the world still has no idea what this partnership actually means in practical terms, but its nice to know that we may soon have a Blu-Ray player capable of playing modern video games. Oh wait.

Sony promised us a YouTube app for the PlayStation Vita this month, and although it's just sliding under the wire, that app is here. The viewer as it hits the console will play videos over 3G and WiFi as well as in HD quality, if you've got the bandwidth to burn. Most of the basics for favorites and searches are covered, including a small player that will let you hop between clips. There's no mention of subscriptions for those perpetually addicted to Maru or Ray William Johnson, however. That quirk aside, the free app is due to swing by the PlayStation Store any moment now, so fire up your Vita and get ready to watchgame strategy videos distracting pet clips on that OLED-packing handheld.

No titles based around the series currently in development, says SCEE producer

Sony has no definitive plans to continue the Resistance franchise in future, an SCEE exec has claimed.
Speaking to OPM, SCEE online producer Daniel Brooke said that whilst the series had been exciting to work on, there was no upcoming game based on the IP currently in the works.

The creator of the Resistance series Insomniac Games revealed earlier this year that it was to step away from the series after releasing the third entry last year.
The last game in the franchise to be released was Resistance: Falling Skies on PS Vita, developed by US studio Nihilistic Software. The game was met with a poor critical reception however, garnering an average score of 59 on Metacritic.

Sony Worldwide Studios president admits the handheld was under represented

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has admitted that the PlayStation Vita was under represented at the company's E3 press conference.
Speaking to Develop Online, Yoshida discussed a string of tweets he received following the conference that criticised the absence of so many of the games being released for Vita over the next year.
"In retrospect, we should've spent more time showing and talking about our PS Vita titles," he said. "We have 25 PS Vita games playable on the show floor... We could have spent more time talking about those, but we had a very clear intention this year to make the total press conference shorter, because we're notorious for holding lengthy ones.
"I'm hoping that journalists are looking at the games on the show floor and getting the word out that way."
Yoshida also elaborated on the importance of the PlayStation Mobile initiative to realising the Vita's potential. Sony has released an SDK that smaller, independent developers can use to make games for Vita and PlayStation certified Android devices.
"In the past, becoming a certified, licensed developer for the Playstation platform was not an easy thing to do. The development kit was somewhat expensive," he said.
"With PS Mobile, people can just download the SDK from our web site and when they decide to publish their game, they can pay us just $99 per year to become the publisher of their content, so that includes PS Vita."
"In my mind, we are still at the starting phase of realising and showing the potential of PS Vita."
Sony's handhled has performed below expectations since it launched in Europe and the US earlier this year. In March, Sony revealed that it had sold 1.8 million units worldwide, but Yoshida has since ruled out the possibility of a price-cut in the near-term.

Sony Worldwide Studios vice president Scott Rohde (aka the Shit Umbrella) says Vita and PS3 can do "special things"

    Sony Computer Entertainment

Sony Computer Entertainment is a Japanese videogame company specialising in a variety of areas in the...

    www.playstation.com

Sony has always had a strong first-party studio system. One of the strengths of the PlayStation business has been that Sony has a robust array of game developers working on exclusive content, whether it's The Last of Us, Beyond, or God of War: Ascension. According to Sony's vice president of Worldwide Studios, Scott Rohde, the first-party studios are all given the autonomy to work on games as they see fit. 3D, PS Move, multiplayer or anything else is never forced upon them. And because he protects their interests, he's known as the "Shit Umbrella."
"This is another thing that I'm very proud of as part of Worldwide Studios and Sony. We do what's best for every single game," Rohde told GamesIndustry International during E3. "It's simply not the culture at Sony to say, 'OK, here are 10,000 initiatives. Everyone must do those things no matter what effect it has on all the games.' Games come first. And that's why all the great studios like Naughty Dog and Santa Monica, they're going to help lead by example across all of our group and do great things. And if they don't think something makes sense, then we're not going to force it down their throat."
"It's my job to create a giant umbrella and protect the studios from that because the game is first. There's a name for that. My nickname is the Shit Umbrella. And it's very apropos," Rohde said with a chuckle.
"Because we have the Vita, I think we can do a lot of special things. And remember, that Wii U tablet doesn't have a processor in it, so it's got to be fueled by that box sitting under your TV"
    Scott Rohde

Indeed, one of the things that many have speculated was forced upon the new God of War is the inclusion of multiplayer. This just isn't the case, if you ask Rohde.
"The game teams are everything and, of course, we talked about it within Worldwide Studios even back during the development of God of War 3. 'Should we think about multi-player here?' And the foundations of what is in Ascension right now, we started to build that during the development of God of War 3 because we wanted to do it right," Rohde said.
"They tried very, very hard to make sure that they were crafting a multi-player experience that did not feel tacked on because it is totally standard and I totally agree with the sentiment across the industry that it's a box that a lot of game teams check. God of War is a single player experience and they found a pretty neat way to turn this multi-player. It still has that whole God of War feel."
With E3 shining a spotlight on Wii U, and Microsoft emphasizing its new SmartGlass technology, the idea of multi-device experiences is gaining prominence. We asked Rohde what Sony has up its sleeve, and predictably he pointed to the Vita as that second screen. In fact, Rohde believes it gives Sony an advantage over the Wii U.
"Because we have the Vita, I think we can do a lot of special things. And remember, that Wii U tablet doesn't have a processor in it, so it's got to be fueled by that box sitting under your TV. We can do some pretty special things that you'll start to see on the floor this year and you'll see more over the upcoming months about what you can do when you actually have a processor in the thing that's in your hand as well," Rohde stressed.
That's all well and good, but every Wii U comes with that touchscreen game pad controller. Moreover, most Xbox 360 owners do own some smartphone or tablet to take advantage of SmartGlass when Microsoft launches it. Vita, on the other hand, is only owned by 1.8 million consumers thus far and it's hard to say how many PS3 owners also own a Vita. Rohde believes this will pick up. It's early days for Vita still, he said.
"When you start to see how you can cross over between the two platforms... developers are interested in that kind of stuff"
    Scott Rohde

"It's only been three months though, just three months. There are a lot of games on that machine and I think what we have to hang our hat on... every single person that actually picks that thing up absolutely loves it. If you're a gamer and you pick up a Vita, you're going to have fun. And you're going to use it over a device like this if you really want a game," he said, while pointing to an iPhone.
"So we're going to continue to build on that momentum. We have a lot of good things coming. And some of the games that we have coming out in the near future, they do cross out into the mobile space a little bit. And I think that's just - again, it's natural. We're not necessarily going to brand that as a technology, but it's absolutely natural for games to do that. You see all the big third party publishers have been doing it for a while. You see hints of it from us and hints of it from Microsoft. That's just going to continue

PS Vita got short shrift during Sony’s E3 presentation, but don’t mistake that for a lack of energy behind the new handheld.
According to Sony, the firm focused on just three big brands heading to Vita – Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty and YouTube – to prove the device’s star power, and also to silence critics of SCE’s typically long presentations.
But there was plenty more new games on display at the expo itself for the four-month-old device.
“We had 25 PS Vita games playable on the show floor, some of which are really great titles I’m very excited about,” Sony’s Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told MCV.
“We could have spent more time talking about those, but we had a very clear intention this year to make the total press conference shorter, because we’re notorious for holding lengthy ones.
He added: “I hope we accomplished that with this year’s conference – which I think lasted about 80 minutes – but from the perspective of people who are waiting for more information on Vita titles, we weren’t able to provide that.
“I got lots of tweets to my account complaining that there weren’t many PS Vita games being talked about. In retrospect, we should’ve spent more time talking about our PS Vita titles.
“I’m hoping that journalists are looking at the games on the show floor and getting the word out that way.”

A new Sony survey has hinted at cross-platform digital discounts for any full game released on both PlayStation 3 and Vita. The research, spotted by Digital Spy, asks respondents how likely it would be that they would purchase a Vita copy of a game they already own for PlayStation 3 if it was offered at a discount. It offered a range of possible savings, ranging from 100 per cent off to a more modest £5 saving. The survey used a seemingly hypothetical Grand Theft Auto game as its test case. The questionnaire also asked customers if they'd rather buy a physical copy of a PS3 or Vita game at full price, or a digital version with a £5 discount. For Vita, respondents were asked to answer the question for five different games - PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, LittleBigPlanet, and unnamed titles in the Uncharted, GTA and Gran Turismo franchises.

Those who are already writing Vita’s obituary are significantly jumping the gun, publisher Ubisoft has stated.
Ubisoft was a key supporter of the handheld with three launch titles and at E3 showed off a Vita version of Assassin’s Creed III.
“It’s a really good platform and we’ve always liked it,” Ubisoft’s senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key told IGN.
“The way it’s designed, it’s a beautiful piece of hardware. It’s got cool features that you can’t get anywhere else. And Assassin’s Creed, we believe, is the right type of game for that system.
“It’s definitely too early to say that Vita’s not going to be a success.”
Key also claimed to be pleased that other big IP – most notably Call of Duty: Black Ops II – has been confirmed for the system.
“Assassin’s Creed III is not the only big Vita game coming this holiday, and I think that’s a good thing,” Key added.
“We’re actually very happy that there’s another big Vita game coming for Christmas from a competitor because we think that will raise all boats. It’s going to generate a lot of interest in the Vita this holiday season. Sony’s going to be spending a lot of money and resources to make sure that the Vita is there and it’s relevant and it’s doing well.”

Finnish mobile phone company Nokia has announced a fresh round of redundancies with some 10,000 workers facing the sack.
The move brings the total amount of staff laid off by the company since the appointment of current chief executive Stephen Elop in September 2010 to 40,000.
"These planned reductions are a difficult consequence of the intended actions we believe we must take to ensure Nokia's long-term competitive strength," Elop stated.
“We do not make plans that may impact our employees lightly, and as a company we will work tirelessly to ensure that those at risk are offered the support, options and advice necessary to find new opportunities."
The company is also closing the last of its Finnish production plants, although it will continue to operate an R&D facility in its home country. R&D sites in Germany and Canada will close their doors, however.
Also closing is Nokia’s luxury handset maker Vertu, which produces flashy jewel-clad handsets costing as much as $300,000.
The net result of these moves – which are expected to be completed by the end of 2013 – is a core operating cost saving of around $3.8bn per year.
Nokia’s share price has tumbled by over 70 per cent since February 2011.
