Grand Theft Auto 5 will be released in Spring 2013, according to supposed images showing European pre-order posters that have surfaced online.
The allegedly leaked images appeared onGTA-Five.pl and suggest - in very small print - the eagerly anticipated sequel will be available between March and May next year, though this has not been officially confirmed by Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive.A March release date has been cited previously on a number of occasions. In September a senior research analyst at Baird said GTA 5 is unlikely to launch before the end of March 2013. Online retailer GameStop UK later listed theGTA 5 release date as March 1.
Rockstar has begun pulling back the veil of secrecy on Grand Theft Auto 5, it recently showed off the game to select members of the press and promised more GTA 5 details in November.
Its teases were accompanied with the release of the first official GTA 5 artwork.

PS Plus is "contributing in a big way" to PSN sales, Sony informs us

    Sony Computer Entertainment America

    us.playstation.com

Sony's online efforts have come a long way in the last six years, and while some would argue that Xbox Live is still superior, one unique differentiator for PlayStation Network is its PlayStation Plus offering. In fact, one industry veteran close to Sony told us recently that Sony has "drastically undersold" the value of PlayStation Plus. Sony appears eager to change that, if you ask John Koller, VP of PlayStation Home and Handheld Consoles.
Koller, who also oversees all PlayStation brand marketing, told GamesIndustry International that PlayStation Plus has seen a big rise in interest and that Sony is going to put some significant weight behind marketing the program from here on out.
"PlayStation Plus is fantastic. This is going to be a significant part of our marketing efforts over the next 6, 12, 24 months. This is a big part of what we do. The amount of value that you get from PlayStation Plus is significant. Since E3, we've seen a significant rise in PlayStation Plus adoption and we'll be utilizing this," Koller said.
"This is a nice weapon in our arsenal that we'll be utilizing and it's just a great value for a consumer that's coming in. If you look at a consumer that's coming in in year 6 or year 7...you could call them a later adopter and giving them an instant game collection, which is what PlayStation Plus provides, has really proven to be successful. So this is going to be a very important part of what we do here over the next few months. You'll see it at holiday. You'll see it even beyond that with various integrations into our ecosystem."
PlayStation Plus is offered for either 3 months at $17.99 or a full year for $49.99. Subscribers gain access to a wide variety of games, early access to demos and betas, discounts on PSN content, 1GB of cloud storage for game saves, and 1-hour trials of full games for select titles. It's an interesting idea, and it's certainly helping to communicate the value of digital to gamers.
"Some of PlayStation Plus' benefit is getting consumers more comfortable with digital content who may not be. Obviously, there's the current PlayStation 3 consumer who tends to be fairly comfortable with digital and we have a great DLC sales and full game downloads and those types of things. But the new consumers who are coming in in particular, which is what I'm looking at here, if we can introduce them to PlayStation Plus and this instant game collection idea, you're bringing them into a world that may be a bit foreign to them if they don't own a system this current cycle. So that comfort level is important to us, it's important to publishers, it's important I think to most people in this industry that we get them comfortable with digital content," added Koller.
So far, so good for Plus. While Sony Computer Entertainment America couldn't share exact figures on the number of Plus subscribers, a spokesperson did tell us that customer satisfaction rates are at the highest ever at 97 percent while renewal intent rate is at 93 percent. "The success of PS Plus is contributing in a big way to driving overall PSN sales, as our last quarter was the biggest in terms of transactional sales in PSN's six-year history," she noted. "The immediate consumer reaction was completely off the charts, and membership sales more than doubled during the week of E3."
We'll be bringing you our full interview with John Koller tomorrow. We talked about Sony's holiday positioning for PS3 and Vita, price cuts, the competition, and much more.

Sony is waking up to a new PlayStation 3 security nightmare after a day in which a brand new, PSN-enabled custom firmware was released for hacked consoles, swiftly followed up by publication of the console's LV0 decryption keys - which some say blows the system wide open. We've been here before of course. Over two years ago, the first piracy-enabling firmware and USB dongle combo - PSJailbreak was released, which exploited a weakness in the PS3's USB protocols, allowing for the system software to be patched in order to run copied software running from hard disk. This was followed up some time later by the release of tools from hacker group fail0verflow, which allowed users to encrypt files for the system in the same way that Sony does, allowing for a new wave of piracy. Geohot's public release of the "metldr" root key also added to the challenges facing Sony, resulting in a messy legal battle. The firm's response - firmware 3.60 - plugged many of the holes, neatly working around the entire root key problem, and even with the release of the new custom firmware, any console running system software 3.60 or higher is effectively locked out. Only hacked consoles, or those still running 3.55 or lower can run the new code unless expensive, difficult-to-install hardware downgrade devices are utilised on older hardware.Despite the effectiveness of firmware 3.60, PS3 has still had to contend with piracy issues, notably the JB2/TrueBlue dongle, but this hack still locked consoles to 3.55 and stopped compromised consoles gaining access to PSN - until recently at least, where the "passphrase" security protocol protecting PSN was leaked, giving hacked consoles full access to the service. The release of the new custom firmware - and the LV0 decryption keys in particular - poses serious issues. While Sony will almost certainly change the PSN passphrase once again in the upcoming 4.30 update, the reveal of the LV0 key basically means that any system update released by Sony going forward can be decrypted with little or no effort whatsoever. Options Sony has in battling this leak are limited - every PS3 out there needs to be able to decrypt any firmware download package in order for the console to be updated (a 2006 launch PS3 can still update directly to the latest software). The release of the LV0 key allows for that to be achieved on PC, with the CoreOS and XMB files then re-encrypted using the existing 3.55 keys in order to be run on hacked consoles. So just how did LV0 come to be released at all? The original hackers who first found the master key - calling themselves "The Three Tuskateers" - apparently sat on its discovery for some time. However, the information leaked and ended up being the means by which a new Chinese hacking outfit - dubbed "BlueDiskCFW" planned to charge for and release new custom firmware updates. To stop these people profiteering from their work, the "Muskateers" released the LV0 key and within 24 hours, a free CFW update was released."You can be sure that if it wouldn't have been for this leak, this key would never have seen the light of day, only the fear of our work being used by others to make money out of it has forced us to release this now," a statement from the hacker group says.We have approached Sony for comment.

Custom firmware puts compromised consoles on PSN, leak of LV0 decryption keys to thwart future security measures

Sony is facing new PlayStation 3 security headaches today, as Eurogamer reports that hackers have released custom firmware that allows for compromised consoles to go on the PlayStation Network, and LV0 decryption keys that will facilitate circumvention of future security updates.
PlayStation 3 security was largely undermined in early 2011 after hacking team Fail0verflow detailed a technique to get unauthorized code running on Sony's console. At the time, the group said they attacked the console's security as a response to Sony removing the OtherOS feature that allowed installation of the Linux operating system on the PS3. Eurogamer notes that Sony's 3.60 firmware actually managed to plug many of the security holes from that event, but piracy has persisted for those willing to run older firmware and not take their systems onto PSN.
However, the newly released custom firmware contains the current PSN passphrase security protocol. And even if Sony changes that with new firmware, the release of the LV0 decryption keys means that hackers should be able to easily lay bare future security measures in system updates.
According to Eurogamer, Chinese hacking group BlueDiskCFW had planned to sell the custom firmware circumventions, which prompted another group called The Three Tuskateers to release the LV0 keys. They also released a statement claiming to have discovered the keys some time ago, adding, "only the fear of our work being used by others to make money out of it has forced us to release this now."

The new PlayStation Store is now live across Europe, according to Sony, following delays to the service’s launch earlier this month. The new look store, which was originally due to launch on October 17 in the PAL regions, uses a darker palette and more of the available screen estate to pack in content. There’s also a new storefront, of course, that has been designed to better promote new games, movies and TV content.

SCEA has postponed the launch of the new PlayStation Store in US and associated territories following the troubled launch in Europe and UK.
Sony has ditched the planned October 23 US launch of the new-look store to allow its developers time to "complete the final phases before launch", according to a statement from Sony Network Entertainment VP, Eric Lempel. The firm offers no new date, saying only that it will update with a revised launch "soon".
The new PS Store went live briefly in UK earlier this week before being widespread issues prompted its swift withdrawal and those already using it were diverted back to the old store. As in the US, SCEE is yet to confirm a UK 're-launch' date as it commits to ironing out the "teething issues".
Here's Lempel's full statement regarding the US launch:
"As you may know, we launched the new PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 earlier this week in Australia, New Zealand and several countries in Europe. Although the new PS Store is operating smoothly in most countries, there have been some issues that caused inconvenience for users.
"While we've already solved many of these issues, we've decided to postpone the October 23rd launch of the new store in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. We want to be certain that you have an exceptional experience with the new store, so we appreciate your patience as we complete the final phases before launch.
"We'll update you as soon as a new release date has been set. Until then, the existing PS Store will be fully operational with the game, movie and TV content that you enjoy today."

It's been a while since we heard anything about Battlefield 3 post-earthquake expansion Aftermath, but today EA grounded out some more details to us, including a release date of November 27 for PS3 Premium members. We also have a debut trailer to enjoy along with new screenshots below.

The new mode is called Scavenger, a Conquest variation which ties into the expansion's setting of a devastated Tehran. You play as a lost soldier, armed only with a pistol and forced to search the rubble to find more powerful weaponry. If you're lucky, you might stumble across the scoped crossbow featured in the trailer.

The expansion adds four new maps, including the reasonably self-descriptive Epicenter and Markaz Market Monolith. There are also three new vehicles, ten new assignments, ten new dog tags, and five achievements/trophies. EA saysAftermath 'starts' releasing on November 27, first for PS3 Premium members, which translated means we can likely expect the same week-by-week roll-out as before. When it does find its way to you, it'll cost $14.99 on PS3 and PC, and 1200 MSP on Xbox 360.

Technical problems with the new-looks PlayStation Store yesterday have lead to its postponement in the UK.
The new-look digital storefront, which was demoed only last week, was supposed to roll out yesterday. And it did, for a while at least. However, a host of complaints from users including problems with account authentication and random crashes led to the update being pulled and the PlayStation Store reverted back to its previous design.
Now its deployment has been delayed entirely in a number of countires, including the UK.
“The phased launch of the new PlayStation Store has been temporarily postponed in some territories as teething issues related to the global roll-out of the Store are being addressed and resolved,” a statement issued to MCV reads.
“It is really important to us that the best possible Store experience is delivered and we appreciate your patience as we resolve these matters.
“The new PlayStation Store is now live in the following countries: Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Germany, UAE, Kuwait , Qatar, India, Israel, Slovenia, Hungary, Turkey, Greece and South Africa.”
