Shantae: Risky's Revenge, the DSiWare sequel to Capcom's long-forgotten cult Game Boy Color platformer, finally releases in Europe on 11th February, four months after its US launch.
Why should you care? Because by all accounts it's the best thing since sliced bread. According toMetacritic, it was the highest-rated DS game of 2010. Its impressive 92 aggregate puts it third in the platform's all-time high score list.
Developed by WayForward Technologies, the same studio behind the lovely Wii reboot of A Boy & His Blob, it's an OTT platformer firmly in the Metroidvania tradition.
According to a Nintendo listing, you can expect to "Discover magical attacks, brew zombie coffee, save golden babies and master the art of belly dancing to transform Shantae into more powerful creatures."
At 1200 Points, it sounds like just the thing to plug the gap until the 3DS takes over in March. Wrap your peepers around the rather awesome launch trailer below for more.

Gonzo offers the Beta 2 of " Gravity Force DS "remake in development of the famous Amiga game of the same name released in 1989.
    Hi folks,

I like to introduce my first DSGM project, which is a remake of the already known Amiga Gravity Force. Until now it is about 40% completed: I managed some basics like Map, Camera movement, general ship movement (still need more adaptions), flash lights and a lot of sprites.

    WaterField Designs DSi Travel Case
    Manufacturer: WaterField Designs
    Site: Buy from Waterfield Designs
    Price: $37.00

Overview : As recommended by Mario and Zelda to revolutionize your DSi. From Yoshi's Island to Castlevania, our compact and protective Nintendo DSi Cases hold it all.

The DSi Travel Case is designed to keep the Nintendo DSi and its accessories (including power supply) all together and tangle-free in one place. Custom-sized, padded, interior compartments and self-locking zippers keep your gear safe and secure.

    Features:
    • 7" x 3.5" x 2"
    • DSi Travel Case Colors (Silver, Red, Green, Brown, Blue, Black)

Quality/Usability : Going on vacations or just commuting from work/school, its hard to keep track of all your items. For cellphones, you have headsets, cases, chargers and extra batteries, if any. With game stuff, there is more to it. You have videogames, chargers, accessories and more. Its hard to keep track of everything. WaterField Designs is here to help remedy that situation with the DSi Travel Case. The DSi Travel Case is made water resistant material that is also washable (exterior material is water resistant...interior is washable). Case has no outer pockets but does have a locking zipper on the top to prevent any items from falling out or falling in. A locking zipper is a zipper that will not move when the tab is folded down. So if the tab is layed flat with the zipper, the zipper will not open unless you pull with some force. The bottom of the travel case has a rubber padding kind of like a basketball texture to prevent any damage or sliding which also runs up along the side of the case. The outside, which comes in many colors has a shiny metallic look to it.

Inside the DSi Travel Case are 3 compartments. One of the compartments is split into two small pouches which can be used to store your DS games. The center compartment can be used to hold bigger objects such as a charger. The other compartment holds the DSi and is pretty snug. The DSi wont budge. However, it can be a little hassle to get out so you can swap locations. Use the center compartment for the DSi and the other compartment for your charger. Dont worry though, the inside is lined with non-abrasive material so you wont have to worry about the material scratching your DSi or other items. There is also a loop at the end of the pouch. This allows you to put your finger through to give you a better grip in holding the case when removing your DSi rather than squeezing the case.

Conclusion : Overall, the WaterField Designs DSi Travel Case stores all your accessories and system all in one location. The DSi Travel Case is made of durable material with a locking zipper that prevents the zipper from opening and rubber material at the bottom that prevents any slipping. Like all WaterField Design products, you're getting a product that is made in the USA and is durable. With a quality product, there is a price to pay. The cost of the DSi Travel Case is just shy of $40. It is a bit pricey for a case. What I do like about these cases though is that even if you get rid of your electronic device, you can still use the case for something else whether it be just to store or to protect a device. So this case does have a multi-purpose to it.

    N-Card 16Gbit SLOT-1 (2GB)
    Manufacturer: N-Card (Chinese)
    Site: Buy from SuperCardNDS
    Price: $57.99

Overview : N-Card is a slot 1 device (no passcard required). It does not use any external storage cards such as microSD. There is a 1GB and 2GB versions.

    Features :
    • Same size as the Original DS Card. Same Manufacturing technology. Colours of case to choose.
    • No FlashMe, No PassMe, No conversion anymore.
    • Support clean rom, no transfer software need.
    • NAND chip inside, provides your same experience of Original DS Card. Internal memory and comes with 8Gbit/16Gbit memory card (16 Giga bit = 2048MB).
    • Low power consuming and long sustaining time.
    • Support Moonshell and lots of homebrew which could patched with DLDI.
    • Firelinke exclusive, your DS could be a Mouse or a game controller.

Quality/Usability : There have been a lot NAND memory Slot-1 flash carts such as DS Linker, DS Fire, Express Card, Ultra Flash Pro EX, MK5 GIGA, etc., but each has its own limitation as the internal memory is not upgradeable.

The packaging is pretty much similar with a cardboard box and inner plastic tray. The tray holds the Slot-1 N-Card, Slot-2 N-Card Flash Linker, USB cable and manual underneath the tray. No software CD was included but you can download the latest files from their website. Another alternative download location would be here. The manual is in Chinese so if you cant read Chinese, it would do you no good. Whats also weird is that the images they used in the instructions, they are either backwards or upside down.

Like all Slot-1 flash cards, it is identical is size to the original Nintendo game cards. It fits flush in the DS. Whats awkward is that the Slot-2 says NDS/NDS Lite but the design of the cartridge will only fit on a NDS Lite. But when placed in to Slot-2 of a NDS Lite, it fits flush with with the DS. The included USB cable is short. So if you have a USB port that is not close to you, you may either have to stretch or walk back and forth.

To transfer files to the N-Card, you will need to connect the USB cable to the flash linker. Once connected, turn on your DS. Your PC will not recognize it and you will be able to drag and drop files.

The GUI isnt the prettiest of things. The top screen displays the games information such as file name, file save, etc. The bottom screen displays icons of the games you have loaded onto the N-Card. If you dont like the background images, you can simply change them just like all other Slot-1 flash carts.

Every game loaded has worked fine. I did not notice any slowdowns or lags. I did however have problems with some homebrew. Hopefully the DLDI support would be better when new updates are released.

Conclusion : Overall, the N-Card 16Gbit SLOT-1 (2GB) is a decent product but falls short in some areas. The short length of the USB cable can be a turn off for some. Although it says NDS, the Slot-2 flash linker will only work with NDS Lites. Would of been nice if they included the GBA flash linker size but this would probably raise the price due to manufacturing costs. Transferring of files takes a little longer than any of the other flash carts. The upside is that it works with all if not most of the games available on the market. Considering this is a 2GB version, I would think this is enough space...for me that is. But for some, it may be too small and would prefer a flash cart with removable memory. But for the price of a N-Card, its fairly reasonable in price.

Please note that none of the "upgrade" products listed in this site are endorsed by Nintendo, Sony and/or Microsoft. DCEmu Reviews and DCEmu Network does not condone piracy. The primary functions of a "modchip" and/or "flashcart" are to allow you to play imported games and homebrew software that you legally own or simply just for experimenting with hardware. We in no way endorse piracy, and encourage all users to do the right thing and support the developers/manufacturers that support them. We do not take any responsibilities for any use outside of these parameters or where the use of such a device is illegal.

    • Supports rumble pack, GBA expansion pack & DS Browser.
    • Supports 4-scale-lightness adjustment.

Quality/Usability : The M3 Team is well known with in the homebrew scene. Their newest product is the M3i Zero. It has a beautiful interface, upgradeable firmware, works with DS, DS Lite and the DSi. Like most flash carts, the M3i Zero comes in a cardboard box with a window cut out displaying the M3i Zero. When you open the box, you pull out a plastic tray that holds the M3i Zero in a plastic case, microSD reader and a USB cord. The microSD reader is really small and has M3 stamped on it. The USB cord looks like a miniUSB cord but its not. It has a USB cord on one end that connects to your computers USB port and the other end has a small thin ribbon cable strip that inserts into a small slot on the side of the M3i Zero. I love the idea but the way it was designed, the cable is flexible but can easily be damaged or bent out of shape. I dont think there is a way to get a replacement for this USB cord only unless you contact M3. However, this cable serves one purpose and thats to flash your M3i with the newest firmware when available.

To plug the ribbon into the M3i, have the M3i logo face down on the table or surface. MicroSD slot should be on the top right side and the bottom opening of the M3i at the bottom...showing you its gold plates. On the left side there is a small rectangle slot. On the USB cord, there is an arrow. Have that face up. Insert the ribbon into the cable. In other words, plug the USB ribbon onto the other side of where the microSD slot is located. It would of been nice if the M3i had an arrow or indication as well.

Flashing the cart is not complicated. Simply insert your microSD into a card reader and copy and paste the updated files onto the root of your microSD card. Remove the microSD and insert it into the M3i. The microSD slot is spring loaded and accepts microSDHC. Plug the ribbon on the USB cord into the M3i before inserting the USB cable into your computer. Once it is plugged into the computer, the M3i should begin to update automatically. The back of the M3i will begin to blink a red light. This will indicate that it is being updated and used and will stop blinking when flashing is completed.

If you have used other M3 products such as the M3 Real, you'll notice that they have used the Sakura theme on the M3i Zero as well. The theme is elegant and easy to navigate. So those familiar with the Sakura will have no problems. Those new to M3 products or the Sakura theme, you'll navigate it in no time.

The top screen consists of file navigation, date, time, control options and the bottom screen is a file browser.

To access the GUI setting, simply press the START button. The GUI setting consists of:

    Viewing Initial Setup at boot
    Run DiskCheck on bootup
    Enable sound effects
    Enable fade transition effect
Show the last file run after booting up
    Lock Folder Navigation
    Hide filename extensions
    Hide unsupported files
    Use dark background screensaver
    Enable FastStart movie playback
    Lock L/R during music playback

Since the list of so big to have it fit all on the screen, as you scroll down, the top screen is also used as a viewer. So you'll be able to view things on both screens rather than the bottom and having to scroll back and forth.

The music player is probably the best audio player for the DS. The controls are fairly to use:

    X/Y – increase volume
    R+L – Pause
    L+R – Next track
L+Left – Bring up the MP3 Menu (a mini menu that appears on the bottom screen on the right hand side. This is viewable no matter what folder you are in and allows you to access the players controls.)
    L+Up – Pause
    L+Down – Change Mode
    L+Right – Next Track

To view pictures or videos, this is done through Moonshell. Movies will need to be in .dpg format in order to be playable.

To play your NDS games, you can simply highlight the game and press A or use the touch screen. This will load the game. If you highlight the game and press X, this will bring up a menu:

    Cheats (contains cheat files)
NDS-GBA Link (allows you to connect your DS game to your GBA game)
RTS Backup (allows you to save your Real-Time Save data. This is different from a save point saved by the game. RTS can be saved at anytime whether it be during in a middle of a fight or you walking and havent reached a save point in the game)
Cheat Switch (set cheats to be Off, Always on, Activatable (turn on and off during a game) or “instant codes”)
Soft-Reset/RTS Switch (You can choose to either have soft reset, or RTS. You can set the key combinations to be: Soft Reset: LR+ABX or LR+ABY or RTS: LR+Select or LR+Y)
Play Mode (allows someone who doesn’t have the game to download it from someone else who has the game through WIFI, so that they may play together aka Download Play. This is found on games like Mario Kart, Tetris, etc.)

Conclusion : Overall, the M3i Zero worked great and loaded up every game and homebrew I loaded. Navigation was easy to browse and was pleasing to the eyes. The way the M3i Zero updates its firmware is very unique however, I feel the design may have a flaw since the ribbon cable has a potential of being damaged if not properly taken care of. It would also help if an arrow or indication was placed on the shell of the M3i Zero to indicate where the ribbon would be inserted. If Nintendo releases a firmware that prevents a flash cart from being used, the M3i Zero is easily upgradeable when a suitable and compatible firmware is released. No need to go out and purchase a new flash cart unless it is really necessary and the developers have exhausted all possible options.

DecalGirl DS Lite NES Skin (Retro)
    Manufacturer: DecalGirl
    Site: Buy from DecalGirl
    Price: $9.99

Overview : Protect and personalize your new Nintendo DS Lite with a precision fit, full-color Nintendo DS Lite skin kit! Each DecalGirl DS Lite skin is designed for maximum coverage and flexibility; this brilliant, high resolution "Retro Lite" design is printed on premium adhesive-backed cast vinyl then covered with a clear protectant layer for the ultimate in durability! An innovative repositionable, sremovable adhesive ensures that you'll have no air bubbles and a fast, easy and accurate installation. As always, they can be removed at any time without leaving any sticky residue!

Quality/Usability : Following the review of our DecalGirl Nintendo Wii and Controller Skin, we had to keep it within the NES Retro family.

DecalGirl has impressed me even more when I received their package in the mail. Their packaging is even more professional with an actual packaging unlike the Wii skin which had no packaging.

The DS Lite Skin comes with three skins; top, inner top screen and inner bottom screen. Applying the top skin was a piece of cake. As for the other two, it took alot longer than I expected.

You'll need a pen or something sharp to detach the little holes for the speaker. Applying the sides is no problem its when you get towards the screen. You will have to do a little fiddling around to align everything correctly. Since I use a screen protector, the skin covers the the sides of the screen. If you have a screen cover that covers the whole top screen, you'll have to either put the skin over it or put the screen protector over the skin. There are flaws to this though. If you put the skin over the screen protector, you'll have to remove the skin to get under the screen protector. If you place the screen protector on top of the skin, you might have problems with the screen protector sticking completely as the edges are now raised off the screen. I personally use Clarivue's screen protector which doesnt have any sticky residue but uses static

The bottom skin wasnt as bad as the top screen but you had to make sure it cleared the directional pad and buttons. At first, I though I would have problems with the skin as anytime you have a raised curve, the skin would crease. The DS Lite Skin did a great job of smoothing out around the corners. There is no crease at all. If there is.

Conclusion : Overall, the DecalGirl DS Lite NES Skin (Retro) looks hot! It fits perfectly and looks great. It may take a little longer for those perfectionist or those anal like me. Would have been nice if the inner top skin didnt cover the screen. Also, I notice that the gray lines on the inner skins arent evenly centered but its no big deal.

    EDGE Card DS Slot-1 MicroSD/MicroSDHC
    Manufacturer: EDGE
Site: Buy from DealExtreme / Buy from VolumeRate / Buy from VolumeRate

DS homebrew and development has always been one of those things that has interested me greatly. However, I'm one of those people that always takes on more than I can handle. It should hardly come as a surprise to many of you that my interest in DS homebrew kinda fell on the back burner to the Dreamcast. At one point in time, my interest was high enough in DS homebrew that I actually bought a flashcart and all for the purpose. My card of choice (there really wasn't much of a choice back then) was a SuperCard SD (Slot 2) and an original PassMe. That was quite a few years ago, so when I was given the opportunity to review a much newer DS flashcart, I jumped all over the opportunity. So, now that you know what kind of perspective this review is coming from, I guess it would be a good time to get it started, eh?

The flashcart in question for this review is the EDGE Card. here's a small tidbit from the manufacturer on what EDGE is exactly (and a picture of its rather unique packaging):

EDGE is a multi functional media adapter for NDS. It accepts MicroSD and MicroSDHC cards. EDGE allows use of Homebrew DS applications, multimedia (via Moonshell) and commercial NDS applications via the SD interface. EDGE is easy to use, just load the EDGE OS (download from support section) onto the MicroSD together with your favourite applications, plug into EDGE then insert the EDGE cartridge into the DS and you're ready to go!

Features of EDGE (as given by the manufacturer):
    • Supports MicroSDHC cards up to 32GB
    • Plays Commercial NDS ROM
    • Plays Homebrew NDS ROMS
    • Touch to execute OS system
    • Works with Moonshell for multimedia playback such as movies and MP3's
    • Frequently updated OS for best compatibility
    • Action Replay compatible cheat system
    • Brighntess adjustment for NDSL
    • In game reset
    • Full download play support
    • Supports slot 2 expansions
    • Multi language user interface
    • Save game saves directly to Micro SD
    • Automatic save game type detection
    • Supports clean ROMs
    • Robust non-spring loaded Micro SD slot
    • Micro SDHC card reader included

    First Impressions/Setup of EDGE:
The EDGE card comes in a rather interesting packaging, shaped like a triangle. The package comes with the EDGE card itself, as well as a MicroSD/MicroSDHC reader. There are no discs of any sort included with the card itself. The packaging has instructions on the back for how to get set up with the card. This simply involves going to the EDGE website, and downloading the latest EDGE OS and extracting it to the root of your MicroSD card. Any other DS programs you wish to use go anywhere on the MicroSD card that you wish to put them. Also, while at the EDGE website, you probably will want to download their EDGE version of Moonshell. The Moonshell RAR file contains a directory named moonshl that should be copied to the root of your MicroSD card. The moonshl directory will not show up in the EDGE file browser, so don't dump any DS applications there if you want to run them from the EDGE OS. Upon doing this, Moonshell is accessible from the EDGE OS by choosing the Media option.

    Overall Impressions:
I have to say that flashcarts for the DS have certainly come a long way since their humble beginnings. The EDGE card seems to be a very solid piece of kit, so to speak. It had no trouble with all the homebrew that I threw at it. It automatically did DLDI patching, and the interface is skinable. I also like the fact that you can boot any old Slot-2 devices (like my old SuperCard SD) from within the EDGE OS (the option is in a bit of an odd place though, in the Settings menu). The OS has a bunch of different languages that it supports (English, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese, just to name some of them), so even if English isn't your first language, you'll probably find some language you're comfortable with to set it to. I'd recommend the EDGE card to anyone that is looking for a new flashcart for their DS. It does exactly what it needs to do, and the packaging is kinda cool too.

    Overall rating: 4.5 / 5

The odd placement of the option booting a Slot-2 device is probably the only thing keeping me from giving this a 5/5.
