With sales of a quarter of a million units in its first week of availability, Nintendogs™ is not only America's hottest-selling video game, but the best-selling new game franchise ever for a portable system.

Retailers already are reporting that Nintendogs, made exclusively for the hand-held Nintendo DS™, has sold out in numerous locations across the country, and Nintendo will deliver more shipments as soon as possible. The three versions of Nintendogs and the DS unit itself consistently rank at the top of Amazon.com's best-selling list of all video game products.

"Nearly 15 percent of all DS owners bought Nintendogs in just a week, a virtually unprecedented adoption rate for any title on an established system," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "And it's also helping sell new DS hardware. Coupled with a price drop to $129.99, retailers are reporting DS sales up between one and a half and three times previous levels, and last week DS comfortably outsold our portable competitors."

Nintendogs lets owners train and care for lifelike puppies using the DS system's touch screen and microphone. It became a cultural phenomenon in Japan and launched in the United States on Aug. 22.

People who like traditional hard-core video games have plenty to enjoy as well. Retailers also report that the new Advance Wars®: Dual Strike military strategy game for Nintendo DS has become one of Nintendo's top sellers.

Looking forward to playing all your favourite artists on a Game Boy Micro? You know, all your favourite artists, like Status Quo, Foreigner, Donnie Osmond and the almighty, currently-sitting-at-the-coffee-shop-across-the-road (no, really) Cheeky Girls? Well if you are, you're gonna have to wait until early next year.
According to Nintendo UK, the Play-Yan accessory, which transfers MP3 music files directly onto your console, won't launch in Europe until Q1 2006. Earlier internet reports had speculated that the handy device would hit stores alongside the Micro on November 4, but alas, these have today been dismissed by official sources.

Still, well worth waiting for in our humble opinion. After all, it effectively converts a decent games playing handheld into a walkman, giving you two goodies for the price of one. Altogether now: 'We are the Cheeky Girls, you are the...' ...

Did you ever run out of backup memory?
Did your backup memory cartridge every died?
Have you ever wondered why some files are so big that you can't get them out of the backup memory cart?
Did you ever want to upgrade your Action Replay's firmware without burning a seperate CD-R for each type?
Did you ever think the Saturn built-in file manager is too slow in handling?
Did you ever want to load save games from CD?
    Of course you did!

Now here is your solution: the Save Game Manager for SEGA Saturn
will give you more backup memory FOR FREE!

    What is the SGM?

    - a full featured file browser
    - a save game compressor (using BZip2 compression)
    - an Action Replay reflash tool (using arflash by ExCyber)
    - much more than any other similar tool on Saturn

A core feature is the usage of faster virtual drives which are not limited in number and size (only by Saturn RAM).
The very efficient compression BZip2 is used and because of it's memory requirement it's a little wonder to have it run on Saturn. It uses almost every byte of RAM available in the Saturn, even external RAM carts.
Have a look at bucanero's VMZip app for Dreamcast, which implements the save game compression idea, too.

Online reports are indicating that Microsoft is planning to encourage 12-month subscriptions to the Xbox Live Gold service for the Xbox 360 with a pricing plan that offers major discounts for long-term commitments.

French website XboxLive.fr claims to have stumbled across the US pricing bundles for the Xbox 360 Live service, with similar details being reported on the website of major North American retailer EB Games.

According to the reports, a Premium Gold Pack will be priced at $69.99 and will get you a 12 month subscription, an Xbox Live headset, $20 off an Xbox 360 game and 200 Xbox Live marketplace points. Plus, subscribers can play Billiards in the Xbox Live Arcade.

For those who don't need the extras a 12 Month Gold Card will be made available, offering a year's subscription only, for $59.99.

If that sounds like too much commitment, the 3 Month Premium Gold Pack is just $39.99. It includes - as you might have guessed - a three month subscription, plus a headset, $10 off a game, 100 marketplace points and access to Xbox Live Arcade game Joust. A straight 3 Month Gold subscription is $19.99.

And finally there's the 1 Month Gold Card, priced at just $7.99. Of course, those who don't want to pay at all can stick with the free Xbox Live Silver subscription - but this will only let you log on to use the marketplace and chatrooms, and you won't be able to play games online.

Microsoft was unavailable for comment so we've really no idea if this is the real deal or a hoax - but the same details have recently appeared on the Electronics Boutique website, only they've priced the 12 Month Gold card at $49.99 instead of $59.99. ...

EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 2 continues to deliver gameplay via the analog Total Punch Control mechanic, allowing gamers to throw multiple punches, block, bob and weave with complete precision and control. Packing in more fearsome punches, players can now dominate the ring with the all-new EA SPORTS Haymaker allowing gamers to knock down their opponents with one devastating blow by adding extra power to each punch. Every hit counts in the game with powerful punches inflicting dynamic injuries on opponents, and thus reducing a fighters ability to defend himself. Players will also manage the boxers inside and out of the ring. Utilizing the new EA SPORTS Cutman, gamers can minimize damage on their fighters by helping them heal critical wounds between rounds.

We’d originally heard something or other about Microsoft launching the Xbox 360 on November 4th or maybe November 22nd, but now IGN reports that the next-gen console is all set to drop on November 25th, aka the day after Thanksgiving aka Black Friday aka the busiest shopping day of the year (at least it used to be). The 25th is a little later than Microsoft had originally wanted to intro the 360, but apparently they wanted to give developers a little extra time to finish up their launch titles. ...

No, it wouldn’t be the first time a game console’s had a keyboard and mouse (remember Mario paint?), but with first-person shooters becoming ever more popular in the livingroom and hi-def output on the next generation of gaming systems, would it be far fetched for the PlayStation 3 to take on a keyboard and mouse? Apparently not, since Sony revealed at a game dev’s conference that you’ll be able to play games like Unreal Tournament 2007 with wasd/pointer-style, something that could pose a real risk to the casual PC gamer market. But the real question at hand is: will these peripherals be PlayStation 3 authorized only, or are we finally going to be able to just rock any old keyboard and mouse on those integrated USB ports so long as the game supports it? ...

The PlayStation Portable has launched at last in Europe, with queues of hundreds of people forming before midnight last night in London's Oxford Street as the very first European units went on sale.

Hundreds of stores opened across the UK at midnight to give gamers a chance to buy the hardware as early as possible, with Paul Arneil being the official first buyer in the UK, at the HMV store in Oxford Street.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz just minutes after the doors opened at midnight, Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Ray Maguire predicted a sell-out launch, with over 100,000 units likely to be sold in the first day.

"The retailers did the pre-order scheme, and most of them had sold out," he commented. "A few of them have some stock there, but it's only in pockets - so I would imagine that people will now start scouting around and trying to find the available stock."

However, he assured the market that the company is working to bring new stock in and meet demand as best possible.

"We've got more stock coming in, obviously, on a daily basis all the way up to Christmas," he said, "so hopefully there should be sufficient, there or thereabouts, to satisfy the demand." ...
