George "Geohot" Hotz – the man who hacked the PlayStation 3 – promised Sony he'll never fiddle about with the innards of a PlayStation 3 again. But now he's gone one step further, and vowed never to buy a Sony product ever again.
"As of 4/11/11, I am joining the SONY boycott," he wrote on his blog. "I will never purchase another SONY product.
"I encourage you to do the same. And if you bought something SONY recently, return it."
The settlement between Hotz and Sony was announced on Monday. Sony was "glad" and Hotz was "happy" to bring an end to the bitter legal scrap that began in January.
You'd have thought budding rapper Geohot would take take the settlement and keep a low profile – at least for a while. Not so.
"There is much more to come on this blog," he added.

    2. Nintendo Wii News

Nintendo could be set to cut the price of the Wii home console this May, according to a new report.
Engadget suggests May 15 will see the console drop to $150 in the US, although it points out the move would be only weeks before the annual E3 games show, where big price announcements are usually made.
If true, a price drop would fuel speculation of a successor to the Wii, which has been on the market since 2006 and boasts lifetime sales of more than 85 million units.
The console currently retails for $199 in North America.
Update: Go Nintendo has posted what it claims is an internal price sheet from retailer Kmart, also suggesting a reduced price for the system of $149.99.

    2. Nintendo 3DS News

The 3DS has broken more launch records, this time upon its release in Australia - where it has become the fastest-selling handheld in the country's history.
The new Nintendo portable sold 31,000 units on its debut, according to website Vooks This fell just short of the home console record set by the Wii with 32,000. However, the Wii record was set during a full week at retail and the 3DS figure is after only four days.
With a population around a third that of the UK, the figures compare to a two-day total in Britain of 113,000 and in Germany of 50,000. The 3DS costs 349 Australian dollars - the equivalent of around £225 and not much more than the price in Europe.
The 3DS has broken handheld records in all major territories so far, but concerns have been raised that sales are already slowing down - particularly in Japan.
Yesterday US analysts suggested that sales had "slowed considerably" in recent weeks, although Screen Digest estimated that the console was still likely to sell a healthy 11.6 million by the end of the year.

The creator of Garry's Mod has revealed that he intentionally added an error message to the commercial version of the mod, which only appears in pirated versions of the game.
Speaking on Twitter Garry Newman commented on how he, "Just enabled this error in GMod today. It happens when you pirated it. Having fun watching people complain." He then provides a link to Google searching for the error message "unable to shade polygon normals".
The error only occurs in pirated version of the utility, with the user's 64-bit Steam ID also forming part of the message. Newman has identified the pirates and locked them out of the illegal version, while also banning them from his forum.
Questioned by fans as to why he implemented the measure, Newman responded: "I don't think the error isn't going to boost GMod sales. I just like to give people that paid something to be smug about."
Although it first became popular in 2004 as a free download, Garry's Mod has been available on a Steam as an officially-licensed Source engine product since 2006.

Microsoft has given more information on the Kinect SDK to be released later in the year. It will include the body tracking software that is used by the Xbox version of the Kinect, allowing it to track up to two people at the same time and stay locked on to them even if they leave and re-enter the frame. In addition, they promise to allow the microphone array to be used with the PC's speech recognition API. So, not only will future Kinect projects be able to track you — they can listen to what you say.http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/1...ack-and-Listen ...

But at the same time, retail research shows the number of new games released is at a six-year low

The average price of a video game last year was £24.32, Chart-Track data has revealed.
That number is a 7.2 per cent increase over 2009, where the average price was just £22.69.

Surprisingly, it was supermarkets that increased prices the most. The average price of a game at a grocer set gamers back £23.93, an 8.7 per cent rise compared to 2009.
Despite the rise, specialist, generalists and indies are still the most expensive games retailers out there. The average price of a game from these stores in 2010 was £25.31, an 8.2 per cent increase over 2009.
Online retail prices were also up last year, albeit not as much as other outlets. Games online on average were priced at £22.97, a 5.4 per cent increase over the £21.80 recorded in 2009.

In terms of the number of titles released, there were just 1,626 games that debuted at UK retail in 2010, the lowest in almost six years.
It’s a sharp decline on the 1,777 titles released in 2009 and is in fact the lowest number since 2004, when there was also 1,626 games released.
The numbers reflect the traditional console cycle, with fewer games released in the last few years of a console generation as publisher priorities change.
However, these figures do not take into account digital sales and are for retail only.

Black Ops beats Avatar and Take That, nine video games in the Entertainment Top 40

3.3 million copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops were sold in 2010, making it the most successful entertainment property of the year, according to ERA.
The game beat the DVD/Blu-ray of Avatar, which sold 3m units since launch. The highest charted music CD was Take That’s Progress in fifth place, which shifted over 1.9m units.

New first party gaming experiences will lead innovation for motion camera this year

Format holder Microsoft is ramping up its support for Kinect with a raft of new games and innovations.
The firm already has a host of first party titles in different genres such as Kinect Sports, Dance Central and Kinectimals, but has plans to announce a line-up of brand new titles as early as E3 this year.

“I can guarantee that Rare and all of our other studios are looking at what we’re doing on Kinect and coming up with some amazing new experiences that people will love,” Microsoft’s UK GM for retail sales and marketing Neil Thompson told MCV. “That’s what we’re focusing on.”
Rare’s studio manager Scott Henson said: “We’ve got E3 coming up, and there’ll be lots of exciting things happening there.”
The first-party Microsoft developer also hinted we’ll soon see Kinect’s next wave of games which will take the technology to a new level. And Rare wants to be leading the charge.

“As a first party studio, our job is to lead innovation on the platform,” added Henson. “We take that seriously, and you’ll see plenty from us in the coming months. I’m sure you’ll see loads from third-party too.”
