This sounds like madness to us, but take it for what you will: TechCrunch is reporting via some tipsters that Amazon is preparing to launch its own Android app store, of all things. Revenue split is rumored to be "the greater of 70 percent of the purchase price or 20 percent of the List Price as of the purchase date," which is pretty strange wording -- this "List Price" concept is apparently designed to prevent you from undercutting pricing with other services -- and there'll be a $99 fee to gain entry, which is pretty standard. Apps will be required to use Amazon DRM and could be featured on Amazon's site, which is potentially a pretty big upside considering the kind of traffic that bad boy gets. As TechCrunch notes, a particularly interesting blurb in the alleged terms states that "[Amazon has] sole discretion to determine all features and operations of [programs] and to set the retail price and other terms on which [they] sell Apps," implying that pricing is their call -- not yours -- and they've got some say in how your app's going to work and what it's going to do.

Clearly we're missing something here, since they're starting with zero market share, the Android Market is the obvious choice for consumers, and there are some really odd terms -- and Bezos isn't a dummy -- so we'll hold out and see where this goes. After all, with Google apparently actively reigning in devices by lording Market access over manufacturers' heads, there might actually be some room for third parties to get some traction here over the long term.

The Shatter exploit that was discovered for iOS 4.1 devices has, predictably enough, been found to function on the latest Apple TV as well. Though a jailbreak fit for distribution is still brewing for all of Apple's iOS wares, this will be welcome news to folks interested in trying to add a little extra functionality to Apple's hockey puck of a media streamer. Then again, even the best of apps might not make up for it being a 720p media device in a 1080p world.

The rise of digital games sales is destroying High Street and ruining an entire sector. Or not.
According to numbers from GAME’s half-year financial report, digital video games revenues accounted for just four per cent of the total market for the first half of the year. The statistic comes from official UK stats body GfK Chart-Track.
"It is easy to overstate the magnitude and speed of that change – consumers still overwhelmingly prefer to buy video games as physical boxed product and the view of our industry is that this is likely to remain the case for some time,"chief executive Ian Shephard stated.
"As Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai recently said (in an exclusive interview with MCV), 'To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme'."
Nonetheless, GAME still intends to do all it can to grab as large a slice as possible of the growing sector and plans to tie-in its online and store operations even further.

"However, even as we are cautious about the speed with which the 'download revolution' will happen, we must be bold in preparing for it," Shepherd added.
"GAME has made investments this year in a wide range of new technologies including mobile apps, digital downloading on the web and even a presence directly in the 'virtual malls' on consoles themselves.
"Fundamentally, we believe that the strength of our customer relationships and our brand position as an expert and trusted retailer give us strength in those emerging channels and our investment in them will continue."

Research in Motion has unveiled its Blackberry PlayBook - a tablet device that has been aimed squarely at the iPad - which will launch in early 2011 in the US, with subsequent international roll-out in the second quarter of the year.

Among the key features are full Flash support - the lack of which has caused significant disruption for web video viewing on Apple devices - as well as HTML-5 integration.

The PlayBook will also include two cameras, a 3MP one on the front and a 5MP one on the back, with 1080p video recording capability built-in.

The PlayBook is RIM's answer to the iPad - and Flash support is likely to prove popular.
"RIM set out to engineer the best professional-grade tablet in the industry with cutting-edge hardware features and one of the world's most robust and flexible operating systems," said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-CEO at Research In Motion. "The BlackBerry PlayBook solidly hits the mark with industry leading power, true multitasking, uncompromised web browsing and high performance multimedia."

The PlayBook will also feature the ability to tether to other Blackberry devices via Bluetooth, and while the company added that it intends to release 3G and 4G versions at a later date.

On the original PS3, there was an ON/OFF switch on the back. With the PS3 Slim, Sony removed it. With all the recent outbreak of open source jailbreaks that allows gamers to install homebrew applications, you must start the PS3 from a cold boot. With original PS3, you simply flip the switch but with Slim owners, you must unplug and plug the power cable. This can be a big hassle especially if you're power cable is not easily accessible. This device retails for 19€ ($19.90USD) and is shipping to retailers now.

The TEAM X3 is well decided to offer products of quality to us, and really useful. Thus, for all the owners of PS3 slim which are not equipped with a switch as on the FAT, the TEAM X3 thus developed X3 Switch, a module which connects between the console and the cable of slim in order to create a switch off-set on the top, by avoiding you the tiresome handling of the cable of slim between each starting of a dongle.

Finally the price of the module should be in the neighbourhoods of 19€, costs carriage included/understood. The address of the site as for it is www.x3switch.com and it will be on line under a few hours.

Environmently friendly saving Energy by completely turns off all power that the PS3 Slim would use

Protects your PS3 Slim power connector from wear and tear
Updates the PS3 Slim to have the same ON/OFF feature as the older PS3s (Fat) have by default.
Conveniently locate ON/OFF switch that fits securely to the back of your PS3 Slim.
The X3Switch is a quality designed and manufactured product.

Q1. What are the benefits of using the X3 Switch on my PS3 Slim?
    A. X3 Switch completely disables power that currently your PS3 Slim is using while even turned off. With the X3 Switch in the OFF position no power is being consumed by the PS3

Q2. How does the X3 Switch save from wear and tear on my PS3 Slim?
    A. X3 Switch will save wear and tear by plugging in directly to the power port in the back of your PS3 Slim. This way you would not have to remove the power cord from your PS3 Slim only from the X3Switch or just turn if off. Then turn it on the next time you want to use your PS3 Slim.

Q3. So the X3 Switch would be just like adding a switch like the PS3 (old Fat) systems have?
    A. Yes, that was exactly one of the reasons the X3 Switch was made to replace a feature that was left off of the PS3 Slim.

Q4. How well does the X3 Switch attach to my Ps3 Slim?
    A. The X3 Switch was designed to fit tightly, securely and align up evenly with your PS3 Slim.

This module is a sensor package for monitoring the electrical activity of the heart. It is the product of an effort to create a Wireless Body Sensor Network node that is dependable while consuming very little electricity, which means a longer battery life. To accomplish this, the microcontroller in charge of the node compresses the data (not usually done with wireless ECG hardware) so that the radio transmissions are as short and infrequent as possible.

[Igor] sent us this tip and had a short question and answer session with one of the developers. It seems they are working with the MSP430 chips right now because of their low power consumption. Unfortunately those chips still draw a high load when transmitting so future revisions will utilize an alternative.

Oh, and why the iPhone? The device that displays the data makes little difference. In this case they’re transmitting via Bluetooth for a real-time display (seen in the video after the break). This could be used for a wide variety of devices, or monitored remotely via the Internet.

    News via http://blogs.distant-earth.com/wp/?p=128

This post is to announce the release of a testing preview of the upcoming 1.2.0 ScummVM release for the GPH (GamePark Holdings) devices I support.

This release supersedes recent ‘SVN’ builds as should provide a very good indication of what to expect in the final 1.2.0 release.

Note: Please don’t mirror or hotlink these preview/test/alpha etc. releases or put them on download services but rather, direct people to this site.

This helps me ensure that users always have the most recent versions.

Also note that these test releases are not officially (or unofficially) supported but I will help if I can.

I am hoping to get at least another preview release out for the GPH devices before the final 1.2.0 release as I carry on fixing bugs. This is why it is important to provide feedback, patches, fixes etc.

Please give these releases a go and provide feedback.

    Noteworthy features:

Below are the main features and fixes added with this new release.

    ALL:

Changes to the way the music drivers are loaded (should fix game loading issues).

    Performance improvements.

Add support for TouchScreen ‘Tap Modes’, Left Click, Right Click and Hover.

    GP2X:

Performance tweaks/code clean-up (quite noticeable in some areas, not giving up on the old GP2X any time soon).

Revised the button layout (please read http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=GP2X for more info), feedback on the button layouts is appreciated.

    GP2X Wiz:

Fixes to 16 bit graphics support (still not sure this is 100% working well).

Revised the button layout (please read http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=GP2XWiz for more info), feedback on the button layouts is appreciated.

    Caanoo:

Revised the button layout (please read http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=Caanoo for more info), feedback on the button layouts is appreciated.

    TODO List:

    ALL:

Add support for a ‘Left Handed Mode’ (swapping the Left and Right trigger behaviour).

Make the ‘Trigger Tap’ configurable by the user.

Anything on the TODO may not happen in time for the 1.2.0 release, it is all rather dependent on my free time and that is at a premium at the moment.

    Supported engines:

These releases feature support for all the game engines enabled for the upcoming ScummVM 1.2.0 including support for the SCI engine (early SCI games) and adding Fascination support in the Gob engine (remember, it’s really not a children’s game).

Full details of what you can expect to see in 1.2.0 can be found in the testing news post.

    Specific restrictions:

Each of the platforms has a small number of restrictions and quirks that have an affect on the games/engines you are able to use well with said platform.

GP2X: The biggest restriction with this platform is the overhead of the scaling when using 640*480 games on the 320*240 screen making such game perform relatively poorly.

GP2X Wiz: I have spotted a minor issue where the screen is not totally cleaned when some types of screen movement occur, that combined with the Wiz’s LCD tearing can lead to the odd graphics glitch.

Caanoo: This backend is new, it’s not as well tested as I would like, I think I have most of the ‘show stoppers’ fixed in this preview but expect minor bugs and kinks.

SCI Engine: This game engine is a big and complex beast. Performance is not yet as optimised as I would like for devices like the GPH handhelds. ...

    News from http://thatotherdev.wordpress.com/

I totally rewrote the game. Got rid of its dependency on Box2D (the game was originally pretty much made just to mess around with Box2D on Wii which was giving me trouble for reasons that I don’t want to get into which is what really led me to actually remake They Do Not Die instead of doing more of a direct port) and used my own self made collision and bouncing system in its place.

It has a two player mode now. Single player is still available as an option. There is obviously also a menu now to allow you to select how many people will be playing.

Instead of using the directional pad the gameplay is now motion controlled. You hold the controller sideways like a NES controller and tilt it forward and back to move the on screen paddle up or down. ...
