The much-hyped launch of Halo: Reach helped to double sales of Xbox in the UK last week, according to official chart monitor Gfk-ChartTrack.

Director Dorian Bloch revealed to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon that Bungie's shooter has had a "marked effect on hardware sales" with Xbox "up 99 percent" for the week ending September 18.

Halo: Reach, which launched last Tuesday, September 14, shifted an estimated 300,000 copies in its first 24 hours at UK retail, and went on to enjoy the fifth biggest-selling launch week ever, according to Gfk-ChartTrack data.

While Microsoft will be encouraged by the boost in Xbox sales, it falls well short of the 1,000 percent increase. fuelled by the launch of the Xbox 360 S SKU earlier in the summer.

GamesIndustry.biz understands that sales of the limited-edition Halo-themed Xbox SKU, exclusive to GAME, played a significant part in the sales jump.

Nintendo’s cult gaming IP Pokemon continues to endure in Japan with news that the latest release in the series has set a new sales record for the brand.
Andriasang reports that between them Pokemon White and Pokemon Black sold a massive 2,637,285 copies in their first week of release in Japan.
It’s the strongest week one performance in series’ history, and far in excess of the 1,586,360 copies shifted by Diamond & Pearl in 2006.
As is always the case, the latest titles boast a host of brand new Pokemon for players to collect. New features include a greater array of online options, such as the Pokemon Global Link – though teething troubles with that service have seen it taken down for the time being.

A collection of US senators – Republicans and Democrats alike – have drawn up a new bill known as the 'Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act.'

The Senate Judiciary Committee will discuss the proposed law, which was co-drafted by its chairman, Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy, this Thursday.

The Act's primary intention is to take down websites "dedicated to making infringing activities."

While exactly what defines a site of this will likely become the subject of debate and appeals, the bill cites it as sites "primarily designed, has no demonstrable, commercially significant purpose or use other than...to offer goods or services in violation of title 17, United States Code."

Following the commencement of action, the court may quickly apply for a temporary injunction against accused sites.

For sites based outside of America, cease and desist orders would be employed to "prevent the importation into the United States of goods and services offering by an internet site dedicated to infringing activities."

Accused domain owners would have the right of appeal against injunctions, but federal courts would be granted the final word.

Viacom, owner of MTV, Harmonix, Shockwave, Gametrailers and Nickolodeon, has leapt to support the bill.

"Businesses hiding offshore are generating large profits from global theft of intellectual property in digital form," claimed CEO Phillippe Dauman, "threatening our nation's prosperity and one of its most vital exports.

"This bill is an important step forward to help curb rampant piracy here and abroad, and protect American jobs. We look forward to working with the Senate and House Judiciary Committees and Congressional leadership on its passage."

Also sponsoring the bill are Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), Arlen Specter (D-Pa.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio).

That "major update" to PlayTV that Sony's promised since April: well, it's going to cost you - even if you subscribe to PlayStation Plus.

"The guys at Cambridge put a great deal of effort into this update and, unlike the previous free updates, we will be charging a reasonable amount for the new features," James Thorpe, PSN product manager, wrote on the European PlayStation blog.

"[PlayStation] Plus members are very important to us and we are looking into providing you guys extra value for PlayTV. Will keep you posted on this.

"If you are not keen on the new features then you do not have to buy the update, therefore there is no reason not to recommend this to your friend, we are not charging people to watch TV."

The update, due later in the year, adds the ability to text-chat with friends while watching live TV. There's also a new guide so you can plan your recordings seven days in advance; a Series Link feature to earmark all episodes of a series for recording; the ability to send Facebook recommendations; and Community Favourites, which lets you see what your friends are watching. Giggle.

PlayTV is an external device for PlayStation 3 that allows you to watch and record free-to-air digital TV on PS3. PlayTV carries an RRP of £70, although most retailers offer significant discounts.

Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade has had a banner month, bringing in a ballpark $17.5 million in revenue over August, according to market research group FADE.

The VGchartz subsidiary does not have access to sales data, and instead based its figures on surveys and projections.

By its own yardstick, August 2010 saw a rise of 6 per cent the $16.5 million revenue rounded up at the same time last year - making this August the service's biggest ever month.

Nine downloadable games were approximated to have grossed in excess of half a million dollars, with Monday Night Combat the champ at $2.8 million and 187,000 units.

Other August success stories were the latest Castlevania ($2.0 million, 131,000 units) and July bestseller Limbo ($1.9 million, 128,000).

FADE calculated that the latter has now sold 334,000 units to date, though it stands in the tall shadow of Trials HD's estimated 1,005,000 lifetime sales – one of just four XBLA titles to shift over a million units
