Samsung Galaxy S4 unable to topple Apple’s flagship smartphone.
Despite backing its new Galaxy S4 smartphone with a record-busting promotional campaign, Samsung has failed to steal the crown of Apple’s iPhone 5 as the most popular smartphone in the UK, Mobile Magazine has reported.
The iPhone 5 was shown to be the UK’s most popular smartphone after uSwitch’s mobile tracker for May found that the Apple flagship device came out on top in terms of live searches, pre-orders and sales.
However, the mobile tracker revealed that Samsung had more devices overall in the top ten with five, whereas Apple only found two of its smartphones in the top ten.
Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com, commented: “While the Galaxy S4 has been an unmitigated success on a global scale, price drops and special offers barely a month after launch shows that the heavily-hyped device has needed a bit more oomph to make waves in the UK market.
“As interest from the hardcore tech fans has waned, Samsung really has had a fight on its hands to wrestle some of that broader consumer attention away from Apple – even with a feature-rich handset like the S4.”
He concluded: “In terms of June, all eyes are towards Nokia’s Lumia 925, set for a mid-month launch. Taking the Windows Phone-powered Lumia 920 as a template and delivering a leaner, camera-focused sequel, it will be interesting to see whether an impressive iteration can stir up a seemingly static table for the summer.”

    2. Windows Phone

Microsoft OS now has 8.4 per cent share, compared to 4.0 per cent a year ago.
Smartphone users in the UK appear to be showing something of a growing penchant for Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system, after sales figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech revealed that the OS has doubled its market share from 4.0 per cent 12 months, to 8.4 per cent in 2013, Mobile Magazine has reported.
While the Windows Phone OS has grown overall, it is the current crop of Windows Phone 8 devices that have been the most positively received.
Elsewhere, the study showed that Apple is responding to Android’s growing success in the entry level smartphone market, with the competitive pricing of its handsets placing the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 among the UK’s six bestselling devices.
However, this could not prevent Apple’s year-on-year market share fall by 5.3 per cent to 28.7 per cent.
Meanwhile, Android maintained its dominance in the UK, occupying an impressive 56.9 per cent of the market, which is up 13.6 per cent on last year.
Elsewhere, BlackBerry’s market share plummeted 58.8 per cent over the past 12 months, despite the launch of BlackBerry 10 earlier this year.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: “Android and iOS continue to take the lion’s share of smartphone sales in Britain. However, Windows phones are becoming increasingly popular with consumers.”

    2. Wii U News

    crediar posted this news:

First of all no this isn't DIOS MIOS because that would never work.

This is written pretty much from scratch and there are still many issues especially with the sound that's why I overlayed a nice music track.

There is obviously no way to use a GC controller on a Wii U and getting wiimotes/CC to work is way too complicated, so what I am using here is a PS3 controller connected via USB.

The Mega Man 10 channel is just my lazy way of loading sneek, don't need any fancy banners

There's no question that the Surface RT comes into its own with a keyboard cover; we can't imagine using the tablet unadorned. Microsoft can't, either, as it's launching a promo that gives the covers away. Americans and Canadians who buy the Windows RT slate between now and the end of June can get either the Touch Cover or the Type Cover for free, no matter which color they fancy. Surface Pro customers are out of luck, but it's hard to dispute the value for prospective Surface RT owners -- the deal amounts to at least a $100 discount on the touch PC's real-world price.
Update: To be clear, this promo has been running in other countries; it's just now debuting in North America, however.

Taking away our right to share games will solve none of the industry's enormous financial and business model problems; it may even make them worse
We're far from the end of the story regarding second-hand games and the next generation of consoles. Microsoft promises to have more information to reveal and implies that gamers will be placated by these further revelations; the only reasonable reaction to this nudge-and-wink follow-up to last week's public relations disaster is to raise an amused eyebrow and imagine the chaos within the company as they try to figure out exactly what the hell they're going to reveal when the time comes. Sony, meanwhile, may well be watching with some trepidation - it's entirely possible that the PS4 also restricts second-hand sales in some fashion. Sony has always said that PS4 will play second-hand games, but hasn't been drawn on detail regarding that stance - and the halo the company is presently wearing (no pun intended) will evaporate rapidly if it transpires that it's also planning such an unpopular move.
"An industry which thinks it's reasonable to wage war on perfectly normal consumer behaviour in this way is an industry that's seriously dysfunctional"

Stepping back to consider the wider picture, we're looking at a very bleak future for pre-owned or sharing of software. Steam is already the de facto platform for PC games, and it offers no second-hand sales channel and no method of sharing software with friends (and I mean that in the traditional "borrow my game" sense, not the euphemistic "sharing" as in piracy). iOS and Google Play games are locked to the user account. Now Xbox One (and possibly PS4) games will also prevent you from sharing games with friends and place hefty restrictions (and costs) on second-hand sales.
This isn't just going to impact on the racks and racks of second-hand games at game retail stores, it's going to have a major impact on gaming culture overall. It means no more buying a game and lending it to a friend when you're finished, or going halves on a copy of something both of you want to play. It means no more going over to someone's house and browsing their shelves for something to borrow - and by extension, removes a major impetus for many people to collect games in the first place. It means no more Lovefilm or other rental services for games, no more communal caches of games in the office that colleagues can dip into. Eventually, terribly sadly, it could even mean authorisation servers somewhere being turned off and an entire generation of games becoming inaccessible - a grim scenario but one which has already happened on a smaller scale with the switch-off of other DRM-backed systems.
There's little point in going into any huge depth about why this is all a bloody awful idea - suffice it to say that as a consumer myself, I don't think I'll be buying an Xbox One if its DRM system turns out to be as draconian, abusive and intrusive as it presently seems, and similar decisions by Sony would equally nix a PS4 purchase. Given that I've bought every console in every generation for almost 20 years, that's a fairly significant departure, but it's no idle chest-beating on my part. If you take out the ability to lend and borrow games, the process of sharing enjoyment and entertainment that's been at the heart of my gaming hobby since it began, I don't know that my time or investment in consoles is justified any more. It's terribly sad to think that key decision makers in our industry are now apparently of the impression that "social" in terms of prancing around like a drunken tit in front of a camera is the future of the medium, while "social" in terms of pressing a game box into a friend's hand with a gleam in your eyes and words of praise and enthusiasm on your lips is to be frowned upon and treated as criminal.
"The cost of developing AAA games has risen and will rise again, but the cost of marketing games has absolutely soared"

What's more useful is to ask how on earth we got ourselves into this position, because an industry which thinks it's reasonable to wage war on perfectly normal consumer behaviour in this way is an industry that's seriously dysfunctional. It's easy, and very tempting, to blame the avarice of publishers and platform holders. There's no denying that some of this market's biggest firms are - like so many modern companies - rather over-padded with MBA-toting examples of human mediocrity whose understanding of the creative industry they've joined is zero but whose capacity to string together meaningless corporate buzzwords into arcane incantations summoning forth utterly rapacious and awful business practices is practically limitless. This is not to say that creative and excellent business minds aren't also at work in games, but they're very outnumbered by sub-par chancers spouting corporate drivel, and as such this entire area of the industry effectively wears a giant "kick me" sign that lights up in bright neon every time something like the Xbox One reveal or an egregious abuse of IAP

A 90 per cent off discount has the Alan Wake franchise leaping back onto, and all the way to the top of, Steam’s top selling titles chart.
Wargame: Airland Battle debuted strong with a runner-up finish for the period, as Metro: Last Light finally relinquished the spot – though it remained on the list in the seven spot.
Several other new releases grace the list as well, including Crusader Kings II: The Old Gods in third, Rising Storm in fifth and GRID 2 in tenth.

    2. PS4

PS4 may be a multimedia device, but Sony is keen to highlight that gaming remains very much at the forefront of its offer.
"The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers," Sony president and CEO Kaz Hirai told the D11 conference, as reported by The Verge.
"If we miss that part, I don't think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3.
"Providing other non-game content is an area we will reveal and talk about in the coming months, but it's first and foremost a video game console."
It’s easy to interpret this as a response to the widespread criticism of Xbox One which, much to the ire of observers, placed the console’s integrated TV functionality at the forefront of the machine’s recent reveal.
Bear in mind that Microsoft has consistently said that next month’s E3 will be a purely gaming-focused showcase for the new hardware.

Well, this is a little out of the blue. Apple has just outed a new iPod touch that falls in behind its existing 2012 models. We're hesitant to call this the sixth generation, as it's more of a stripped down variant of what's already available. Not many of the specs have changed: the dimensions are identical, you're still getting a 4-inch Retina display, and the same dual-core A5 processor hums away inside. While the new model still has the front-facing FaceTime HD camera, it's lost the 5-megapixel main shooter, and a little bit of weight, to boot (0.06 ounces). Storage capacity has taken a hit, however. The other iPod touch comes in 32GB and 64GB varieties and a number of colors, but this new model sports just 16GB of storage and only comes in silver. Those lesser specs come at a lesser price, and you can snag one from Apple's online store now for $229, with retail locations getting it tomorrow. We reckon this won't be the only Apple product people'll be talking about today. Prepare for the cheaper iPhone rumor to make the rounds again.

    2. Apple News

Apple has surprised the tech world with the launch of a new iPod Touch, which drops a number of features in order to shave down its price.
The seemingly entry-level iPod Touch maintains many of the same specs of its predecessor, still using the same dual-core A5 processor and four-inch Retina display.
But whilst the new Touch maintains the HD front-facing camera, it drops the device's main five-megapixel camera, one of its biggest omissions.
Perhaps Apple felt that incorporating a second camera on the device was overkill, but it's something that fans of the device are likely to miss.
The device is also quite stingy on storage capacity. Whilst previous devices offered a choice of both 32GB and 64GB, this latest generation provides just 16GB.
As a result of the loss of features, the latest iPod Touch weighs in less too, dropping 0.06 ounces.
However, despite the losses, consumers can expect to pay a smaller price for the device with Apple pricing the newest Touch at just $229.

US wireless carriers have been quite cagey about the availability of BlackBerry's Q10, with most committing only to a vague June release. But as of today, T-Mobile is the first to officially lock down a hard date for non-enterprise customers: June 5th. Starting next Wednesday, UnCarrier subscribers will finally get a chance to call the Q10 their own, with a choice to either pay $100 upfront (with a 2-year payment plan) or $580 outright for a crack at BB10 in portrait QWERTY form. For the money, prospective owners are getting a 3.1-inch, 720 x 720 Super AMOLED touch display, BlackBerry's famed physical QWERTY layout and, of course, the gesture-heavy BB10 OS. Not included in the box? A complimentary Chief Creative Officer business card with your name on it and Alicia Keys' dignity.
