The PSP2 has been in the rumor mill for a long time now, even a year or more before the announcement of the PSPgo at last year’s E3. How about we add yet another rumor to the already massive list, this time from Shane Bettenhausen and the 4 Guys 1UP podcast. Shane is most well known for his work in Electronic Gaming Monthly and is currently the Director of Business Development at Ignition Entertainment.

In the podcast Shane let slip about seeing PSP2 and a new Nintendo portable at this years E3 convention in June.

“I think the big story of E3 is DS 2 and PSP 2. I’m really excited to see that,” he further commented that the”DS and PSP both existed in completely different sides [...] if those two put out similar products at the same time, it really evens the playing field.”

We will see just how accurate Shane is when E3 rolls around this June or before knowing Sony’s ability to keep a secret. In the mean time, what do you think of Shane’s claim of a new PSP2 at E3?

Nintendo has said that 76 Wii titles have now sold in excess of 1 million copies - 22 of which are first-party developed games and 54 of which were made by third-parties.

And 108 DS titles have also reached the milestone, with 45 first-party and 63 third-party games selling over a million worldwide, according to Dan Adelman, Nintendo's head of business development, speaking at the company's Media Summit in San Francisco yesterday.

In terms of the online libraries for Nintendo systems, Virtual Console now has 347 titles, WiiWare has 189, and DSiWare 127, reports VG247.

The same press event also bore news of the US release dates for the DSi XL and Nintendo's core releases for the first half of 2010.

The new larger-screened DSi will be released in North America on March 28, Nintendo confirmed, at a retail price of $189.99 (£124).

Like in Japan, the console will come with some pre-loaded software - in the the case of the US launch that will be Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math and Photo Clock, the DSi browser and Flipnote Studio applications.

Game announcements included the awaited release date for Super Mario Galaxy 2, which was pinned for May 23 in the US, reported Gamasutra.

Team Ninja's Metroid: Other M was dated for June 27, Capcom's Monster Hunter Tri for April 20 and Treasure's Sin and Punishment: Star Successor for June 7.

Nintendo also confirmed it would publish Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies in North America this summer.

UPDATE: Nintendo Europe has announced that Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released in the UK on June 11, Monster Hunter Tri April 23, Sin & Punishment 2 May 7, and Metroid: Other M a third quarter release.

New research from AdMob shows Google has work to do if it wants Android to be as big a market for paid apps as iPhone.
The company's January Mobile Metrics report includes a survey of consumers, which finds that while 50% of iPhone users buy at least one paid app a month, only 21% of Android users do.
The survey also focused on overall downloads - free and paid. On average, iPhone and Android users download nine new apps a month, while Palm webOS users download six.
However, iPod touch users download an average of 12 apps a month, making the device top dog in this metric.
What's more, iPod touch owners use apps more, spending an average of 100 minutes a day using applications, compared to 87 minutes for webOS users, 80 minutes for Android users, and 79 minutes for iPhone users.

The iPod touch is clearly appealing to a younger audience, too. AdMob says 78% of iPod touch users are younger than 24, and that the average iPhone user is 14 years older than the average iPod touch user.
The survey also found that 73% of Android users are male, compared to 56% of iPhone OS users (including both the iPhone and iPod touch).
Another interesting finding from the report: 17% of AdMob's ad requests in January came from non-phone devices - up from 12% in July last year.
The company also asked people if they were interested in buying an iPad. 16% of iPhone users said they were, compared to 11% of webOS users and 6% of Android users - with the latter group equally interested in buying a Kindle.
The survey focused on 960 respondents, although one gap is that BlackBerry owners weren't canvassed, since AdMob doesn't serve ads into BlackBerry apps.

A new adult option for iPhone apps disappeared almost immediately
The controversy around Apple's policies regarding sexual content in iPhone apps got a new twist yesterday, when it seemed as if the company was about to allow adult apps again.
Cult Of Mac reported that a new category had suddenly appeared in the iTunes Connect service used by developers to submit their apps to Apple - 'Explicit'.
However, no sooner had it appeared and been reported on, then the category disappeared.
Tech blog Gizmodo talked to an iPhone app developer who claimed to have asked Apple about the mystery category, and been told that "it's not going to happen anytime soon".

New machine not on the horizon “any time soon”, according to Cammie Dunaway
At its media summit in America yesterday Nintendo once again reiterated Nintendo’s stance that either a Wii HD or Wii 2 is nearing release.
“I don't think it will be any time soon,” Nintendo of America's executive VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway told Gamespot when asked about the mystery hardware.
Analysts have repeatedly predicted the impending arrival of either w Wii successor or an updated version of the current console, and while Nintendo has spoken of its ongoing Wii developments it has also moved to rubbish reports that a new hardware release is nearing.
However, Dunaway was prepared to discuss Nintendo’s thinking behind what direction new hardware will take when it eventually materialises.
“Part of Nintendo's heritage is to always be looking at innovation and to start working on new hardware as soon as we launch a platform, so we'll have it ready when we think the time is right.

“At the end of the day people don't care about the technology, they care about what you can do with it and I think that no one's better than Nintendo and being able to create these kinds of immersive experiences that consumers love.”

Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian has told CVG that it's got an eye on using Project Natal for a mini-game in a future instalment of the series.

Speaking in an exclusive interview - which you'll be able to read on this site very soon - Ruffian producer James Cope said:

"I think Natal as an experience is great because it's opening up a kind of social gaming thing and there's a good place for that. I don't think that fits with what makes Crackdown, Crackdown right now.

"But that's not to say it doesn't fit in with what we want to do with it in the future... we have an opportunity to look at Natal... Because Crackdown is a bit of a non-sensical world and it's about mini-games and having fun within that, we can look at building mini-games that make sense for Natal into the Crackdown univese."

The news comes after Valve's Chet Faliszek told CVG in no uncertain terms that the US developer would never put a 'tiresome' Natal mini-game in a future Left 4 Dead - despite branding the hardware "very cool".

PlayStation Home has expanded quite a bit in 2009, with 50 spaces and over 100 games now available within Sony's virtual world. It has been a modest success, but perhaps it's fallen shy of the lofty expectations placed on it when it was initially unveiled at GDC nearly three years ago. Since then, Sony's online service has managed to cut advertising deals with Red Bull, the US Army and Fox -- but has Home been able to maintain interest?

According to a report by Brandweek, advertisers are largely ignoring PlayStation Home, opting to pursue opportunities on Xbox Live instead. Ad agency Publicis Denuo's John Rafferty told the site that "from moment one, it kind of felt clunky. And once you got through that, there wasn't much there." Regardless of the robotic nature of the service, the high cost of entry is proving to be a huge barrier against Home, with "labor-intensive six-figure deals" required to create content for the community.

Jack Buser, director of PlayStation Home, argues that it offers "a chance to cut through the noise and actively engage directly with a large, targeted, and highly desirable consumer base." However, it appears that advertisers that want to work with Sony are interested in pursuing a different relationship -- one with the PlayStation Network itself. "Sony is a little more conservative in embracing their system as an ad platform," the report notes. However, the addition of the What's New screen, and advertising on the PlayStation Store, show that the Sony team is adapting, slowly transforming the PS3 into a system that advertisers can genuinely pursue.
