The 920's little brother has a 4.3 inch display and changeable covers.
Hot on the heels of the Nokia Lumia 920 announcement, comes the unveiling of the mid-range Lumia 820.
Another Windows Phone 8 smartphone, the 820 has the same guts as the 920 (a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4) but will have a smaller 4.3 inch screen, an eight megapixel camera and just 8GB of storage.
The look of the 820 can be changed using different covers in a range of colours including red, grey, white, black and yellow; and some covers will enable NFC and wireless charging.
Again, no pricing or availability info yet.

A new dedicated handheld game console from a company that is neither Nintendo nor Sony, with support from only one publisher and with absolutely zero prospects for new games, would seem like an impossible sell – especially at $200. And yet, upon seeing Blaze's Neo Geo X system, I was overwhelmed with the desire to possess it. Other usually rational Joystiq staffers have expressed similar feelings.

I have a hard time understanding why I would be so interested in a new console that only plays old games. But I think the dedicated nature of it is exactly the draw.

According to yet another Wii U release date rumour, Nintendo's new console will be out in US on November 11 for a base price of $249.99.
The source is a supposed listing on the login-assess-only site of VPD - Video Product Distributors, who has Amazon among its distribution clients.Interestingly, the listing snapshot (pictured, viaGoNintendo), shows three release SKUs priced at $249.99, $299.99 and $349.99.
Could Nintendo be offering gamers the option to bundle more than one Gamepad controller with higher-priced Wii U packages? We hope so.
This isn't the first time the console's been tipped for a November launch. Gaming accessory maker PDP apparently leaked a November 18 North American release date for the Wii U during a GameStop managers' conference, where they were detailing upcoming products, but has since moved to curb the spreading rumour, calling it 'a misunderstanding'.
Predictably, Nintendo is blocking its ears and humming loudly in response to the barrage of Wii U release rumours.
Nintendo will host a Wii U-focused press event in New York City on September 13, at which a US Wii U release date announcement is expected.

Sure, you could get one of Think Geek's iCade controllers to play actual arcade-style button mashing games -- or you just bring the nostalgia of the joystick to your light switch for $30 with its recently introduced Power-Up Arcade light switch plate. The unit can replace any standard light switch plate, turning it into a faux gaming control panel. A traditional joystick replaces your old switch nub to control the lights, while its two action buttons enable "pew pew" sound effects when pressed. If all that wasn't enough, the Power-Up also acts as a nightlight after you use it to pwn hit the main lights in your quarters (you'll have to provide of a duo of AA batteries yourself). Check out the video below to see it in action for yourself.

When the Raspberry Pi was released earlier this year, the credit-card-sized Linux machine became an instant hit. The night it became available to order, both Premier Farnell/element14 and RS Components, the official distributors of the Pi project, exhibited the signs of a late '90s Slashdot effect: you could barely even get the two sites to load. Fast forward to today, and you can finally get your hands on one within three weeks. The Raspberry Pi is truly the Linux device of the year, if not the past decade. Follow past the break and we'll show you how to set yours up now that you've actually succeeded in snagging one.

Pachter puts Microsoft's next console in spring of 2014

    GameStop

    gamestop.com

Microsoft and Sony are expected to debut their new consoles late next year, but Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter places the next Xbox all the way back in spring of 2014.
"We have heard no word yet from Microsoft or Sony about their plans to launch new consoles, but both manufacturers are widely expected to launch consoles by year-end 2013, although we believe that Microsoft could delay a new console launch until spring of 2014 in order to accommodate what is certain to be overwhelming demand among hardcore gamers," Pachter said in a research note obtained by CVG.
This speculation dovetails with the thoughts of GameStop CEO Paul Raines. He toldPolygon that he expects one console in 2013 and another in 2014.
"This week, I'm getting a lot of rumors that are very interesting about 2013. We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013. We're expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in '14. These rumors change every week, but we're hearing more about next year," he said.
With both statements taken together, that would put the next PlayStation in 2013 and the next Xbox in 2014. Can Microsoft afford to wait a year?

The boss of global games retailer GameStop doesn’t believe that both the Xbox 720 and PS4 will launch in 2013.
"The Wii U, we expect it at holiday," CEO Paul Raines toldPolygon. "This week, I'm getting a lot of rumours that are very interesting about 2013.
“We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013. We're expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in '14. These rumours change every week, but we're hearing more about next year.”
Of course, it should be reiterated that no one knows precisely when the next-gen machines will arrive.
What we do know is that Xbox 720 is further along the production line than PS4. However, we also know that elements within the Sony hierarchy are determined not to allow the Next Xbox to enjoy the same sort of head start on the market that 360 had over PS3.
MCV is of the understanding that both companies plan to launch their new hardware by the end of 2013. But, as we’ve learned, plans are always subject to change.
Raines also claimed that his company has a direct line with platform holders and is actively advising them on how best to deal with the current generation of machines which, in light of their impending successors, should in theory be in line for a price drop.
"We're constantly in dialog with them, we're certainly going to offer opinions about what we think is the right thing to do," executive marketing VP Mike Hogan added.
"We're not opposed to price cuts. There's a point in time where you'd look at a console and say, 'We support the idea of you taking a price cut, because we'll sell a lot more units.' You have to look at the whole thing as an ecosystem. You might be selling the console for less money, but you're putting it in the hands of more people, and will sell more games. I would say actually, our interests are pretty well aligned with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo when it comes to that.
"The main thing is just communication. What we want to know is when it's going to happen and let people know so they can get the right value. Obviously the person who may have paid full price two weeks ago doesn't feel good if the price cut comes right after."
Of course, don’t forget that Sony currently plans to launch a second revision of its PS3 console before Christmas that will retail for less than the current machine.

Xbox Live has been down most of this morning. And gamers are not at all happy.
It doesn’t help, of course, that today’s the day that the second piece of DLC for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, called Hearthfire, is out now. But despite no sign of a reprieve Microsoft tells MCV that everything’s going to be OK.
“Nothing’s been flagged to us on the Xbox Live service, but we are reporting some minor issues to the service via Xbox.com,” a spokesperson stated. “This does happen from time to time what with regular updates and fixes to the system and should not be anything to worry about.”
However, MCV readers are less than convinced by the explanation.
After Tweeting earlier that all will soon be OK, one reader contacted MCV with the following:
“Cannot get online via console, app or Xbox.com Last night me and my friends received friends requests from loads of accounts with 0GS [zero GamerScore, suggesting a new/fake account]. Not just friends people we were playing against also relieved these requests.”
Of course, MCV cannot verify the truth of these claims and Microsoft is certainly not budging, but one thing we can say for certain is that the longer the blackout remains, the louder the calls of foul play will become.
UPDATE: The same reader has contacted MCV again to say that he has now managed to log in to Xbox Live, but is facing further problems.
"I have got into my account BUT it said I was last logged into another console. Cannot gain access to my account management. So cannot see if MS points have been spent or not...bank account is fine though. Error message on console when trying to access 807B01F4"
UPDATE 2: There are now widepsread reports of users being able to log back into Xbox Live without any problem. Hopefully that is the end of the issue.
UPDATE 3: Other users are also reporting the 807B01F4 when trying to access account settings:

EA Labels president Frank Gibeau believes that the time for new IP is at the beginning of a console generation, not towards its end.
The Electronic Arts exec reveals that the publisher is working on "three to five new IPs" for the next generation of consoles, but feels development resource is better spent on iterating existing series during the life-cycle of contemporary hardware.
"The time to launch an IP is at the front-end of the hardware cycle, and if you look historically the majority of new IPs are introduced within the first 24 months of each cycle of hardware platforms," Gibeau told Gameindustry.biz. "In this cycle we've been directing our innovation into existing franchises.
"If you look at what we're putting into Need For Speed: Most Wanted we're taking a lot of risks there, the same thing withBattlefield - you have to admit that, from Bad Company 2 toBattlefield 3, there's a huge amount of change there."
It's a depressingly conservative position but, couched in the relative safety of established series, Electronic Arts is indeed innovating - at least in an iterative sense - and Gibeau's sentiments make sense. However, in making his assertions, Gibeau is calling into question the willingness of players to take risks on new ideas, and it's less clear if it really is market conservatism, or risk-averse publishers creating the situation. Gibeau doesn't seem to think it's the latter - a position backed up to some degree by the modest sales of bold mid-tier releases such as Vanquish, Binary Domain and Inversion.
"If you look at the market dynamics, as much as there's a desire for new IP, the market doesn't reward new IP this late in the cycle," he continues. "They end up doing okay, but not really breaking through."
But as Square Enix's Sleeping Dogs' two-week run at the top of the UK charts shows, there are exceptions to every rule. And it's difficult to discount the interest around Ubisoft's Watch Dogs, which is slated for the current generation.
As console life-cycles extend (it's hard to imagine that the next generation will revert to the hitherto traditional five-year cycle), it will become increasingly difficult to justify such a rigid adherence to sequel production over the creation of new games. Gibeau admits as much, but should the ten-year cycle become the norm EA will have to change its long-running reliance on regular updates to a handful of core franchises if its seat at the summit of videogame publishing is to be retained in the years to come.
