Sony Ericsson has just unveiled a concept Symbian Foundation platform based phone called Idou. It's actually more than just a concept as it is said to become a real device, but at the moment it is in a very early stage so many things may change until then. Detailed information/specifications and release date will be announced later this year but the device is supposed to become available in the second half of 2009.

Idou is a part of The Entertainment Unlimited consumer proposition announced today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Bringing together rich content, unique applications and best in class entertainment experiences, the new consumer proposition is based around three key promises:

    * Uniting best in class entertainment experiences into one offering such as the Walkman music experience, the Cyber-shot imaging experience, Java gaming and messaging integrated with services and applications.
    * Broadening entertainment experiences by seamlessly integrating the mobile phone into other devices in the home letting consumers share and enjoy top quality entertainment content through a variety of channels including TV, PC and Hifi systems.
    * Fusing communication with entertainment by removing barriers and offering unlimited sharing opportunities, multiplying the value of people's entertainment experiences through a host of innovative web applications and Sony Ericsson's Play Now offering.

Capture moments, talk through pictures and share all your experiences like never before with the 12.1 megapixel camera, intuitive touch features and Xenon flash. Tap directly into your favourite videos and tracks with the full-touch media menu and feast your eyes on movies, TV-series and video clips in true 16:9 widescreen format (3.5" display). Based on what will become the Symbian Foundation operating system, thousands of applications are available online letting you install new applications and download exciting content from PlayNow to make the Idou truly yours.

The demo unit showcased in Barcelona was equipped with a very "introductory" development build of the OS so it's hard to speculate now how the final version will look like. Based on the first release of the Symbian Foundation platform, it will be a successor to the current S60 5th Edition. As a "Symbian Foundation Certified" device, it will be cross-compatible with all other Symbian Foundation based devices of other brands (e.g. Nokia or Samsung) and hopefully also with existing 3rd software that now works fine e.g. on the Nokia 5800. The UI of the Idou will follow Sony Ericsson's UI design, including e.g. the Media Bar, Walkman Player, icons and menu style known from other Sony Ericsson phones. ...

Here's an interesting one-off about Windows Mobile 6.5. Microsoft has mandated that all phones running the OS feature a physical "Start" button.

Using the Start button will not take you to the Home screen, like the Zune, but to that trademark honeycomb icon screen that's new to Windows Mobile 6.5. As much as we like touchscreens, mandating a hard button in the 6.5 spec seems like a smart decision from Microsoft—one that should keep widely varied phones running the OS doing so with some level of consistency. ...

The Palm Pre isn't pulling any punches when it comes to attacking iPhone weaknesses. It has copy and paste, data tethering and will support Adobe's Flash.

Flash was confirmed to Newsweek's Dan Lyons weeks ago, but now they're being open about the support.

Palm has joined Adobe's Open Screen Project—an industry initiative designed to bring full web browsing and Flash-based apps to televisions, desktops and mobile devices. So, by definition, this will not only bring a complete web-browsing experience to the Palm Pre, it could also result in the development of standalone Flash apps for the webOS platform. The Flash player for smartphones is expected to be released by the end of the year. ...

So this thing's definitely got some heft to it -- and honestly, especially for a business-centric device in this class, we don't think that's a bad thing. As with just about everything HTC churns out, the Touch Pro2 is exquisitely manufactured, feels rock-solid, and the WVGA is absolutely awesome -- we noticed that the gestures and animations are totally smooth and responsive, proving that WinMo is perfectly capable of handling this kind of UI dazzle.

The Straight Talk functionality for seamlessly moving between different types of communication will be appreciated by anyone who spends half their business day on the phone and seems to work (and look) positively lovely -- and as for that speakerphone? We can totally picture ourselves slamming this thing upside down during a meeting in a fit of "our company just lost a $100M contract"-style rage with a satisfying, weighty "thud" and instantly bringing the whole room into the conversation. Follow the break for a couple videos of this thing in action (and sorry, no angry speakerphone fits).

Microsoft has no plans to change the price points of the Xbox 360 in Europe to take into account the impact of the falling pound Sterling versus the Euro, which effectively makes the console cheaper in the UK compared to mainland Europe.

Additionally, there's little evidence that European gamers are taking advantage of the situation and importing consoles en masse, according to the corporation's VP for the Interactive Entertainment Business in the EMEA region, Chris Lewis.

"We're mindful of [the situation], but it's very hard to plan too far ahead as regards foreign exchange rate fluctuations," he said. "Sterling right now is in a different place right now versus the Euro and the Dollar, and the Yen - so that which you allude to, you'd start to expect to see some the Sterling-based business hemorrhage out of the UK.

"Actually we're not seeing that much of it - we have a look at it a couple of weeks ago along those lines, trying to match our sell-in with our sell-through to see if there's a disparity there that might imply that stock is going elsewhere. We're not really seeing a lot of it at the moment - but that's not to say it won't start to happen.

"Do we then get into a flurry of price changes? No, I think we remain structured about it and we don't try and predict too far ahead what we think currencies will do. I think we're in a fine place as regards our price points anyway now, and I think the consumers are testament to that - they are flooding to the platform in a way that is even beyond our own expectation levels to be honest - which is great.

"Fortunately we've built sufficient inventory to give us the flexibility to accommodate those levels of demand versus our original plan, so we haven't had any stock shortages. We have sufficient stock to continue to cope with increased demand," he added.

The full interview with Chris Lewis, in which he also talks about the impact of marketing and the New Xbox Experience, is available now. ...

Whilst some stockists claim to be continuing to struggle to get their hands on copies of Wii Fit, enough of Nintendo’s title has clearly made it into the channel to secure a fifth successive week at the top of the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack UK All Formats Top 40 this week.

It’s the ninth time that Wii Fit has topped the UK listings, putting the title within touching distance of becoming Nintendo’s most successful chart title ever.

And there’s more success for Nintendo, too, with news that last week’s number four, DS hidden object debutant Mystery Case Files: Millionheir, has climbed one place to third this week.

Warner Interactive will be pleased to see next-gen FPS FEAR 2: Project Origin enter the charts in its first week of release in second position, whilst back on the fitness tip, Ubisoft’s My Fitness Coach sees an impressive nine-place jump elevate it to eighth position.

D3P’s Ben 10: Alien force debuts in 13th place, whilst Sega’s shooter sequel House of the Dead: Overkill, begins its UK chart journey at number 15. Other debutants include Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box in 36th and Disney’s Bolt at number 40.

The ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 40 in full (for the week ending February 14th):

    1. Wii Fit (Nintendo)

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company wasted little time in setting a Japanese date for the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game. Across the great pond (or the great plain -- if you're in Europe somewhere), Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky is now scheduled to hit the DS on April 18.

This followup to Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness promises new characters and episodes along with more robust online features over its predecessors. Today, Pokemon detailed a new type of episode that players will encounter in the game. Referred to as "special episodes," these put you in control of a separate character in a story that's set apart from the main character. New special episodes become accessible from the main title screen as you progress through the game.

We've updated our media section with official Japanese box art (featuring newcomer Shaymin) and screens of two of the special episodes, whose Japanese names can be translated (unofficially) as "In the Dark Future" and "Genius Igglypuff." Check out the shots while waiting for some sort of confirmation about an American release. ...

Metal Gear Solid 4, one of the PS3's best exclusives, will cost you not a penny more than £24.99 as of March 5, Konami has confirmed. And if you look hard enough, you'll probably get it cheaper.

"Konami Digital Entertainment has announced that its heralded PlayStation 3 epic Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will be released as part of the budget Platinum range from March 5th in (((insert country)))," says the slightly unfinished press release.

It doesn't specify how many copies of the game have been sold worldwide so far, but Konami does confirm that Snake's latest outing pushed total sales for the Metal Gear series above to 26.5 million units mark.

Pat on the back for Kojima, then. And if you haven't bought MGS 4 yet, you bloody should. It's brilliant. ...
