    News/release from A_SN

This thread is dedicated to compiling the results from GP2X MKII screen colour test program (as a follow up to this year-old thread) I'm hereby releasing. The LCD colour correction test consists in a series of simple tests designed to find the precise colour characteristics of GP2X screens and to correct them. The test comes in two parts, one SDL program you run on your PC, and one program you run on your GP2X.

Both programs display the same colours, the goal is to make the colour in the center of the screen on the GP2X match as closely as possible to the one on the PC screen. It assumes that your PC screen has a decent colour calibration. One thing that is essential to remember is that your eyes shgould be perpedicular to the GP2X's screen, which means you should see the reflection of your eyes right in the middle of the screen. Additionally you may want to turn all the lights around you off.

So here's how it goes :

-Download the PC program (Windows and Linux versions as well as the source that is compiled with the command 'gcc pc_colour_test.c -o pc_colour_test `sdl-config --cflags --libs` -lpng')
-Download the GP2X program, copy on SD card, launch
-The screen fills with a red gradient. Move the joystick from left to right to move the vertical black bar to the point at which the gradient stops on its right hand (and brightest) side and becomes uniform bright red. Then press A and do the same for Green, Blue and White gradients.
-Launch the PC program. Both the PC program and the GP2X programs now say "Number of points: 4). We'll leave it to that, as we want to all use the same number of points in the curve. Press Return on the PC and button A on the GP2X.

-Now you see both screens divide in three rectangles. A black rectangle, a dark red rectangle, and a bright red rectangle. The goal is for you to make the middle rectangle on the GP2X more or less bright by moving the joystick left or right, and press A when you're satisfied with the resemblance between the colours on both screens. Please remeber that the middle rectangle is not always a 50% mix of the two other rectangles.

-There's 4 such tests for each colour channel, which means a total of 16 tests. Make sure that you're always on the same test on both programs. On the PC you can go back and forth using the arrow keys or the Return and Backspace keys.

-When you're done, the PC program will simply quit, and the GP2X program will display its results, which look like this :

    CODERed Green Blue White
    204 200 196 200
    127 126 102 120
    101 87 77 90
    167 162 138 157
    185 183 164 178

-Write them down and post them here. If you don't "feel" the White test, feel free to not include its column when you report the results.

If you wish you can run the test many times and average each value. Just make sure to mention how many times you run the test so that I can appropriatedly weight your results in the final average (I won't make it proportional but the square root of it, as running a noisy test N times only makes it sqrt(N) times less noisy).

Note that this test program will not actually attempt to do any sort of colour correction. It will be the object of the later release of colourd (the colour correcting daemon, see 2nd post of this thread) and will be made part of the final release of the Open2X firmware as a menu option.

As a result of this thread, once I'll have compiled all the results into a weighted average, we'll get a very precise colour correction.

Important note : make sure to report the model of your GP2X. MKI's don't have the same LCD as MKIIs (I don't know what F200's have).

    Hi folks!

It has been a while but I have been very busy with getting my masters degree, getting a job in the game development and just working to earn my living. and learned some new tricks

Anyway, I have created three new tutorials on optimization. I have had some questions regarding optimizations and I have optimized my code quite a bit lately, so I thought why not create a tutorial about it. One of them is about using the VFPU

Please keep in mind that I have created most of the optimization tips for beginners so do not complain if it is too easy or if you already know everything

    Here they are:

    - The tutorial list page
    - Optimization: The basics
    - Optimization: One step further
    - Optimization: Using the VFPU

Hope it is helpful and as always, if you have questions use the form below the tutorials and do not forget to include your email otherwise I cannot answer back

It's certainly one of the more innovative titles in development, but Sony believes Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet will also prove a big driver in hardware sales this autumn as the battle for market share intensifies.

With heavyweight franchises like Gears Of War, FIFA and Guitar Hero expected to dominate Q4, releasing an original IP during the year's busiest period is a gamble, but Sony is placing great faith in the UK-developed title, which invites users to "play, create and share" content locally and over PlayStation Network.

"Our target audience is everyone," explained associate producer Eric Fong, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz last month at Comic-Con 2008 in San Diego, where the game was being demonstrated to the public.

"It's got enough complexity that people can play it and enjoy it for many hours; at the same time, if you're just a casual user you can run through and play the game and have fun with it. Everything you see in the developer levels, you can create as the player."

Talking up the game's sales potential, he added: "It's going to be a hardware seller. Not only do you have the platforming experience that a lot of other games will have, you have this creativity that really is exclusive to LittleBigPlanet."

But some believe Sony's real challenge is in communicating the game's unique features to consumers, a point which Fong conceded. "How do you explain the game...without getting your hands on it? It's a difficult thing to do."

Therefore events like Comic-Con and Germany's Games Convention, which takes place later this month, have become a crucial part of Sony's aggressive consumer awareness campaign.

"We've been able to get it into the hands of the consumer and they're loving it," Fong said of the San Diego showing, where the LittleBigPlanet booth was well attended throughout the show.

LittleBigPlanet is due for release on PlayStation 3 in PAL territories this October, with a Japanese release confirmed for October 30th. ...

Lexicon Entertainment has unveiled a new platform puzzle game for the DS called Monster Frenzy.

Set in the year 2020, the game follows the story of a mystery alien virus that's penetrated the Internet.

The game revolves around a number of mini-games in which players battle a variety of monsters. We're not sure how this is related to a virus being present in cyberspace.

It sounds a bit like WarioWare to us, except without the five second frantic race to complete each task.

Monster Frenzy is scheduled for release in Q4 of 2008. Take a look at the screenshots for a taster.

Silicon Knights boss Denis Dyack said hitting the level 50 limit in Too Human may take anywhere between 50 to 80 hours.

"First play through is probably around 15 hours, I guess, it depends. To get to level 50, it's anywhere from 50 to 80 hours. It's a lot! There's a lot there to want to dig! And to get all the epic loot - I don't even know if it's possible to get everything in the game, it's probably not - not for a single person," Dyack told Kikizo.

The ambitious Xbox 360 role-playing game, based on Norse Mythology and set in an ancient but technologically advanced civilisation, is finally finished. And Europeans will get the game on 29th August.

Dyack, surprisingly, then said work on the two following instalments in the trilogy was already quite far in advance.

"The story was done a long time ago," he said. "The theme of the first game is discovery, the theme of the second game is revenge, and the third game, enlightenment.

"And the trilogy and the whole idea of focusing on the Norse mythology and effects on technology we think is really going to turn people's heads."

The Silicon Knights boss was also optimistic of timely turnouts for the rest of the trilogy; it is "very possible" we will see them before Microsoft replaces the Xbox 360 hardware.

If not, Dyack revealed Too Human was built to be scalable, "So even if another platform does come out, we're not very worried about it." ...

Capcom has stuck a "TBC" note on the PlayStation 3 version of Bionic Commando Rearmed, which we had hoped to see on 14th August.

That's when the US version releases - a day after the global launch of the downloadable platform shooter on Xbox Live Arcade.

But it looks like Sony's insistence on broad localisation has caught another Capcom game in its net - after similar delays to the PSN launches of Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 and 1942: Joint Strike.

Capcom confirmed to Eurogamer this morning that the game's PSN release is TBC, but recent comments by Sony Europe boss David Reeves presumably hold the clue to the answer.

"When the US launch, we could launch in Australia and we could launch in New Zealand and the UK, but if we did that then our colleagues in Italy and France and Germany and Spain would not be very happy, so we've chosen to stick to the strategy of doing it pan-European and pan-Australia and New Zealand," Reeves told us at E3.

Capcom wouldn't be drawn on a current release estimate for BCR on PSN in Europe, but the best-case scenario is a simple one-week delay. When it does launch, you'll be asked to pay GBP 6.99 / EUR 9.99.

Meanwhile, the PC version - due out on Steam, Direct2Drive, Gamer's Gate and other digital distribution platforms - is due worldwide on 14th August for USD 14.99.

Bionic Commando Rearmed is a reimagined version of classic NES title Bionic Commando in which players navigate 2D platform levels using a grappling hook rather than a jump button.

As well as a significant single-player game Rearmed includes a range of Challenge Rooms to test your grapple skills, along with local co-operative and four-player competitive multiplayer options.

Look out for our review next week and in the meantime check out our recent Bionic Commando Rearmed hands-on preview. ...

Microsoft marketeer Albert Pennello has claimed Xbox 360 sales were the pivotal factor in bringing Final Fantasy XIII to the console - not any funny goings-on behind the scenes.

"I think the most obvious reason that [Square Enix] made the announcement is just looking at the success of our console. I mean, we're the leading console on a worldwide basis, we're more than double the install base on the US," Pennello told MundoRare (spotted by VG247) .

"I think it's easy to assume that something is going on behind the scenes, I think the more obvious answer is we're doing really well and the game creators want their games to be where the most people and the most consoles [are], and right now that's the Xbox 360."

Square Enix announced Final Fantasy XIII for Xbox 360 during the Microsoft press conference at E3. Rumours suggest the platform holder had to pay for Square Enix to breach the exclusivity contract with Sony.

Final Fantasy XIII will remain a PS3 exclusive in Japan, and is yet to be dated for the West. Game director Motomu Toryiama said his team had not begun work on the Xbox 360 version yet, which could hold up the PS3 version in the West, as Square has committed to a simultaneous platform launch. ...
