Sony Worldwide Studios president admits the handheld was under represented

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has admitted that the PlayStation Vita was under represented at the company's E3 press conference.
Speaking to Develop Online, Yoshida discussed a string of tweets he received following the conference that criticised the absence of so many of the games being released for Vita over the next year.
"In retrospect, we should've spent more time showing and talking about our PS Vita titles," he said. "We have 25 PS Vita games playable on the show floor... We could have spent more time talking about those, but we had a very clear intention this year to make the total press conference shorter, because we're notorious for holding lengthy ones.
"I'm hoping that journalists are looking at the games on the show floor and getting the word out that way."
Yoshida also elaborated on the importance of the PlayStation Mobile initiative to realising the Vita's potential. Sony has released an SDK that smaller, independent developers can use to make games for Vita and PlayStation certified Android devices.
"In the past, becoming a certified, licensed developer for the Playstation platform was not an easy thing to do. The development kit was somewhat expensive," he said.
"With PS Mobile, people can just download the SDK from our web site and when they decide to publish their game, they can pay us just $99 per year to become the publisher of their content, so that includes PS Vita."
"In my mind, we are still at the starting phase of realising and showing the potential of PS Vita."
Sony's handhled has performed below expectations since it launched in Europe and the US earlier this year. In March, Sony revealed that it had sold 1.8 million units worldwide, but Yoshida has since ruled out the possibility of a price-cut in the near-term.

Children compensate for active gaming by exercising less elsewhere
A study of children using a number of high-impact exercise games has shown that having them in the home does not actually increase the amount of exercise which members of that household participate in.
A US university study, reported by the New York Times, reveals that, instead of encouraging children to become more active generally, playing games based around physical activity merely leads them to over-compensate in other areas, resulting in no net gain on calories burned.
Having distributed a number of Wiis to families with overweight children, some with exergames and some without, the study confirmed a long-held academic principle: that a sedentary lifestyle is a tremendously difficult habit to break, finding "no evidence that children receiving the active video games were more active in general, or at any time, than children receiving the inactive video games."
It's not the first study to have similar findings. A previous investigation into the use of Wii Sports in homes discovered a rapid fall off in usage statistics in the weeks following purchase after an initial flurry if enthusiasm.
Asked for comment on the studies by the NYT, Nintendo offered a predictably anodyne statement.
"While Nintendo does not make any health claims with active-play games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit Plus, we hope that the games encourage users to be more physically active. They are designed to get people up off the couch and to have fun."

Two British teenagers have admitted they participated in DDoS attacks on Sony and others
Two members of "hacktivist" group LulzSec have pleaded guilty to hacking Sony and other companies with DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks. Ryan Cleary, 20, and Jake Davis, 19, both admitted to the Southwark Crown Court that they took part in the attacks on Sony, Nintendo, 20th Century Fox, NHS and others. Cleary pleaded guilty to six of eight charges filed by London prosecutors at a hearing today, while Davis pleaded guilty to two of four charges.
Cleary, who is already jailed in the UK was indicted earlier this month by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles. His attorney has said she would "fiercely contest" any moves to extradite her client to America.
"Cleary is a skilled hacker. He controlled his own botnet, employed sophisticated methods and his broad geographic scope affected a large number of businesses and individuals," FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller told Reuters in mid-June.
Ryan Ackroyd and another 17-year-old man whose identity is being concealed for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty to four charges. They both denied attacking websites from Sony, Eve Online, Nintendo, News Corp.'s British unit and others. They also denied stealing and posting confidential information obtained by the hacking efforts.

Square Enix has confirmed that ten-year-old MMO outing Final Fantasy XI remains the profitable title in the series ever released.
“Looking at profitability, it’s the top of all past Final Fantasy games,” Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada told the Vana Fest 2012 audience, Andriasang reports.
The publisher recently announced yet another expansion pack for the title, which is available on PC, PS2 and Xbox.
Wada added that “if you were to add up the total playtime of all currently active FFXI players, you’ll reach a figure of over 200,000 years”.
A second Final Fantasy MMO, FFXIV, was released in 2010 but has been beset with problems from the outset.

Blackberry manufacturer RIM is said to be considering selling off its handset business and becoming a messaging service specialist.
The Sunday Times (via The Verge) reports that both Facebook and Amazon are “potential buyers” for the division.
The plan would see RIM retain its messaging and data network operations which it would then licence out to third parties.
An alternative strategy being thrashed out be directors, the paper claims, is to sell a sizable stake in the business to a company such as Microsoft. More concrete plans are expected to be revealed over the summer.
RIM has declined to provide any guidance for its Q1 earnings though anticipates posting a loss.

Apple quietly switched out a statement that claimed its Mac computers were completely immune to viruses with a less-forward statement: 'It's built to be safe.' The PR shift comes in the aftermath of the Flashback Trojan, which affected hundreds of thousands of Macs back in early April. From the article: 'Apple strives for perfection, but stating something is perfect when it isn't is ultimately bad for PR and company morale. Jobs used his reality distortion field to "rally the troops," so to speak, but "Mountain Lion" will ensure Apple can tout its closed, highly-secure operating system for the foreseeable future in a much more realistic sense. 2. Nintendo 3DS News

The 3DS XL could yet be available to pre-order for just £149.99 before the machine arrives in the UK on July 28th.
GameStop is the current cheapest in the market with a pre-order price of just £167.97.
It is followed by ShopTo (£179.84) and HMV which has today unveiled a price of £179.99 for the handheld.
However, a retail source has told MCV that Nintendo’s trade price for the hardware is just £146, meaning that retail could yet look to hit the magic £149.99 price point – or possibly less.
Attention now turns to supermarkets, who could well be prepared to take a hit on the device to gain key market share and drive store footfall.
UPDATE: A second retail source has contacted MCV to point out that a trade price of £146 would incur an additional VAT bill of around £21.50 per unit, meaning the actual trade price would be around £167.50.

Microsoft will launch its first own-brand retail outlet in the UK in March of next year, a new report claims.
The Verge says that it learnt of the plan “through sources familiar with the company” and that the High Street arrival will be preceded by the launch of an online store.
It adds that Microsoft recently registered its own private company in the UK that is designed to spearhead its UK push.
Microsoft has yet to decide on the exact location of the store, but does expect to open its doors in March 2013.
Microsoft currently has 19 stores based in North America.
