Protesting the release of Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) on April 29, outspoken game critic Jack Thompson (pictured left) has written a letter addressed to the mother of Take-Two Interactive chairman Strauss Zelnick.

Take-Two Interactive owns Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar and is publishing the upcoming title. The letter was delivered to Strauss Zelnick's lawyer, per a past settlement that only allows Thompson to communicate with Take-Two via counsel.

Thompson's meandering letter compares Strauss to a Hitler Youth, quotes scripture, accuses him of causing the death of three Alabama police officers, questions if the Boy Scouts ever awarded him a Ted Bundy merit badge, and wishes the chairman's mom a happy Mother's Day.

    The complete, unedited letter follows:

    Extract of letter:

    Mrs. Zelnick
    Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two Chairman's Mother
New York, New York Via e-mails to intermediaries

    Re: Your Son, Strauss Zelnick

    Dear Mrs. Zelnick:

Your son, as you may know (or maybe you don't know), is Chairman of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., whose most popular video games are the Grand Theft Auto murder simulator games banned in some countries but sold to children here.

Your son last week was reported to have said the following about Grand Theft Auto IV, due to be released Tuesday, April 29: "We've already received numerous [GTA IV] reviews, and to a one, they are perfect scores. My mom couldn't write better reviews..." Taking your son's thought, I would encourage you either to play this game or have an adroit video gamer play it for you. Some of the latter gamers are on death row, so try to find one out in the civilian population who hasn't killed someone yet.

What you will see in your son's game, if this iteration of GTA is anything like its predecessors, is incredible interactive violence aimed at police officers (whom you can shoot in the head and see the blood spray), innocent bystanders (whom you can run over with your car just for the heck of it), and of course the plentiful female prostitutes you can have sex with and then filet with a knife or stomp with your feet in order to get your money back. Experts note that the recent plethora of cop killings is caused in part by your darling son's entrepreneurial energy. There are three policemen dead in Alabama because of Grand Theft Auto. I was on 60 Minutes about it. I hope Strauss has provided you with a flat screen tv to see the grief of the bereaved families that fills the screen.

The first reports of illegal rips of GTA IV appearing online on Xbox 360 have started to emerge – and the game’s presence on a number of gamertags confirms that some are already getting to grips with Liberty City.

Kotaku reports that a PAL rip of the title appeared on newsgroups at 11:50am this morning courtesy of a hacker named iCON.

Once downloaded and burnt onto a DVD, owners of either a debug/test 360 or a modded machine were able to run the code.

The PS3 has to date been more resilient to hacking attempts, so most pirate activity is expected to focus on Microsoft’s console.

Meanwhile, Achievement Point tracking site MyGamerCard.net shows eight players whose profiles show GTA IV activity, VG247 reports.

It has been claimed that the game is already in the hands of a number of retailers, but also that all involved have been required to sign agreements stipulating that the title would not be sold early – or even given to employees ahead of release. ...

Stray Bullet Games may be developing its upcoming MMOG for Wii, according to a recent job opening posted on the company's website.

In an advertisement for a senior programmer, Stray Bullet listed a skill set required from all applicants. Among the desired abilities was experience developing and shipping titles on Wii and/or GameCube platform. (Cheers GameSpot).

Previously, the company had only revealed that its unannounced MMO game was a mixture of science fiction and high fantasy.

"The new project will contain a fully-realized, ongoing online conflict that combines furious action with tactical and strategic game play," states Stray Bullet on its website.

"In the game to come, characters and guilds will engage in meaningful, exciting, and fun mass combat.

It all sounds very complex, which casts doubt on whether it could work on Wii - if it is indeed heading to Nintendo's console, which is yet to be confirmed. ...

Microsoft has confirmed that downloadable content for Ace Combat: Fires of Liberation will be ready over Xbox Live tomorrow.

The content comes in the form of six new planes. Prices will vary, with the cheapest plane being for nothing and the more costly of the bunch costing 400 Microsoft Points.

Aircraft fans can look forward to using the Typhoon, SU-47 Berkut, F-16C Fighting Falcon, Tornada GR.4 and the Rafale M Idolmaster. We don't understand what any of these planes are. Or if we've even got the names right. But the screenshots look pretty.

Air Combat 6: Fires of Liberation received a nice 8/10 from Xbox World 360, which said: "One of the prettiest games you'll ever see and the best air combat going."

Microsoft will soon need to address the issue of Xbox 360 storage limitations, according to Rockstar president Sam Houser.

Speaking in an interview with 1UP about the hardware difficulties the developer encountered when making Grand Theft Auto IV, Houser stressed that a lack of storage space on Xbox 360 discs and Microsoft's non-mandatory hard drive strategy were problematic.

"One of the problems with the 360, and it affects games like Grand Theft Auto if you think about how much content we put in the actual machine, is the fact that they don't have a significantly larger storage medium than the previous systems. It's a slightly bigger DVD disc," he said.

Plus, noted the interviewer, Microsoft doesn't include a hard drive with all 360 models.

"I think that the 360 is going to have to get 'round this issue we're talking about. I can think of various ways they can do it. Hopefully, they're going to adopt one of those in the next year or so, because it's going to become more of an issue. If we're filling up the disc right now, where are we going? It's not like our games are going to get any smaller. I think that issue's on the table with a bunch of games right now. I'm sure they'll come through with an intelligent solution."

Houser is not the first developer to voice concerns about Xbox 360 storage limitations. Earlier this month Rory McGuire, lead game designer on The Bourne Conspiracy, told our sister site CVG that Microsoft should have included a hard drive as standard with every 360.

"In retrospect I wish Microsoft had made the choice to have [mandatory] hard drives like Sony did with the PS3," he said. "Developers certainly benefit [from a hard drive]. If you have a hard drive, the whole game loads faster. Obviously you'll be facing a short install time, but the developer benefits from it and you definitely benefit from it as a player. So I think that was one of the mistakes that Microsoft made with the 360."

Microsoft, however, says it is more than happy with its current SKU lineup, which includes a hard drive-less Arcade unit in addition to hard drive-equipped Pro and Elite models.

"You're a gamer, I'm a gamer, we're connected to Live, we want to download content, so for us, we definitely want a hard drive," Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg told Next-Gen recently. "...That's definitely the right solution for us, and frankly for a large majority of our customers. For my friends that want to go online and get the complete entertainment experience, I definitely recommend that they get the Pro or Elite console.

"At the same time, with the launch of the Arcade console this past holiday, you talk to some of our mass market retailers that talk to a very different type of consumer, [and they'll tell you the Arcade model] sold out when we originally launched. They've performed extremely well."

Criterion has just revealed that motorbikes are on their way to Burnout Paradise in the upcoming "Davis" update.

The developer aired the news in its latest podcast where it showed the first footage of the two-wheelers and uncovered a day and night cycle to go with it.

Criterion expects the "Davis" update to be available in late July.

We were also shown footage of a biplane flying around Paradise City, which is something Criterion "might put in this year".

The chatty developers revealed that the "Cagney" update will be with us in late June, too.

Inside this will be roughly 35 fixes asked for by the community, as well as a Hunter Olympus SUV and some sort of fancy online calendar to keep you updated with all the online events.

These events should be happening every weekend, and some server-side wizardry means the team can change things with no more than a day's notice. The team has plans to dish out unique car-prizes to people sending in very funny emails or winning competitions. And these vehicles will promote plenty of jealousy, apparently.

Criterion said "Cagney" would add around 70 FreeBurn challenges to the mix, and generally be a "massive" update in every way.

"Bogart" is the next update to go live, which will be available tomorrow on PS3, although some 360 owners will have to wait a week for a revised version without frame rate problems.

In this will be more features asked for by the community, as well as user liveries for the first time ever.

Other promises we heard were 1080i implementation, improved SD support, and custom soundtracks.

Criterion reiterated how serious it was about its on-going support for Burnout Paradise, and urged you to keep sending in suggestions.

"We want Criterion to be known as the most friendly development team in the world," said the person holding the camera, which might or might not be Alex Ward. ...
