37 per cent of the UK population has played a game in the last 12 months.
That's according to Ian Bramley, senior director of Ipsos Media, who today shared some key insights into the reports his firm is now compiling for the Interactive Software Federation of Europe.
This morning, the ISFE unveiled the new GameTrack data it has commissions Ipsos to produce.
The reports claim to be the most detailed and comprehensive view of the market, including every platform and kind of game out there.
Including the stat in our headline, Bramley offered up example insights from what the GameTrack research is discovering, including:
    - In the UK, 37 per cent played games in the last 12 months. That's 21m people.
    - In France, it's 50 per cent of the population. Or 29m.
    - In Germany, it's 40 per cent, or 31m.
    - Almost 90 per cent of 11-year-olds across Europe play video games in some form.
    - Just over 40 per cent of 6- to 10-year-olds re playing apps. The margin drops considerably through the age demographic, down to just over over 10 per cent for consumers aged 45 or older.
    - Almost 25 per cent of 11- to 14-year-olds in UK play games on social networks.
    - In UK, only five per cent of people say they play games on apps, online AND packaged. In the UK there is a huge contingent that only plays packaged goods.
    - 68 per cent of UK kids play packaged goods games. 65 per cent play online games. 43 per cent play apps. 31 per cent play all three. So the child gaming audience is much more converged than the five per cent average detailed above.
    - In the UK, 25 per cent of the population plays games on PC or Mac. 25 per cent play on console, too. Smartphones and iPods, although ISFE didn't give the figures, are ahead of dedicated games portables and tablets by a big margin.
    - But in the UK in terms of value, the majority of revenue - likely around 80 per cent - is driven by packaged goods. So while alternative channels are popular, they aren't necessarily profitable.
    - Pre-owned is 16 per cent of the UK market. It's 18 per cent in France.
    - Half of the games played in the UK during Q1 2012 were apps.
    - Angry Birds was the UK's most popular game in Q1 2012. It had 10 per cent of the total market.
    - 20 per cent of the total time dedicated to playing games in France is dedicated to social games.

    2. Xbox 360 News

Microsoft has sold 67 million Xbox 360 consoles since the system launched in 2005.
The figure was revealed in a blog post by Yusuf Mehdi, chief marketing officer at Microsoft's interactive entertainment division. Mehdi, a recent recruit, claims sales have grown each year, and that Xbox 360 enjoys a 47 per cent share of the current-generation console market.
The past year, however, has heralded the system's transition from a pure games console to a multimedia device, and it now boasts more than 200,000 movies and TV shows in its catalogue. The coming year, Mehdi says, will see the Xbox 360 change still further.
"To date, our success with Xbox has been led by a box in the living room," he writes. "Moving forward, Xbox will go beyond the box to reach all new families of devices. Just as Xbox has grown to mean more than games, it also is more than just a console.
"This year, Xbox becomes the premium entertainment service for Microsoft. Whether on your PC, tablet, TV or phone, Xbox will be a gateway to the best music and video, your favourite games, and instant access to your friends.
"You’ll see the first of that next week at E3 where we will showcase the very best of Xbox. We’ll unveil new games, show new ways to enjoy the entertainment you love and, as always, we’ll have a few surprises to share."
Microsoft's E3 conference kicks off at 6pm UK time next Monday, June 4, and we'll be covering it as it happens, with news, tweets, and a live stream right here on Edge Online.

    2. Apple News

Apple CEO Tim Cook has poured cold water on continuing rumours that the company is plotting an entry into the console gaming market, saying he is "not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming."
Speaking during the D: All Things Digital conference, Cook was asked if, following Apple's huge role in the rapid growth of mobile gaming, he wanted the company to repeat that success on big living-room screens.
"I view that we are in gaming now in a fairly big way," Cook said in response. "One of the reasons people buy an iPod Touch is gaming [but] I realise that is not the big screen you are talking about. Most people play on portable devices. Where we might go in the future, we'll see. Customers love games.
"I'm not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming. But Apple is a big player today, and things in the future will only make that bigger."
Cook chose his words carefully, of course, and clearly left the door open for expansion into the living room in future. Given his responses to other questions - where he was far less equivocal, either giving a full, honest answer or batting the question away without comment - it's easy to infer that Apple is, at the very least, contemplating taking on Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo head-on.
Yet it would only do so on its own terms. It's hard to see Apple launching a loss-making games console, running around doing exclusivity deals with big developers and publishers as Microsoft did to forcibly gain a foothold in the market. Any move into big-screen gaming appears some way off, with the rumour currently focused on Apple entering the TV market - though an Apple TV, with an integrated App Store, would provide the company with a stealth route into living room gaming.

    2. PS3 News

Sony is close to agreeing a deal to acquire either Gaikai or OnLive, according to reports.
Reports last weekend claimed that Sony was to announce a partnership with a major cloud gaming firm during its E3 press conference next Monday. However, a source has told MCV that Sony's interest in the cloud runs far deeper than that, and that an outright acquisition is "close to being signed."
What's not known at this point is whether the deal is intended for Sony's consoles, or its range of TVs. The latter is more believable at this point, especially given the recent deal which has seenGaikai integrated in LG Smart TVs.
By contrast, a console deal would be a real shock, and not just to retailers - and if a deal is close, our money's on it being with David Perry's company. Speaking at CES in January, Gaikai chief product officer Nanea Reeves said: "Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3." Sony spent heavily on PS3, of course, and its high price consigned it to an early third place from which it has never recovered. Could the PlayStation 4 be a Bravia TV, with cloud gaming innards?
Expect more to be revealed at Sony's E3 conference, which takes place on Monday 6pm PST - or 2am on Tuesday. We'll be there, of course, ensuring a steady flow of timely coverage so you don't miss a thing; the best way to keep on top of it is by keeping a close eye on our E3 2012 topic page.

    2. Playstation Vita News

Sony has announced a temporary price cut for PlayStation Vita in France, a limited offer that will take place from June 1 to July 15.
Customers will be entitled to a rebate of €50 (£39.87) on console purchases during the promotion's duration. Unfortunately, Sony doesn't intend to replicate the offer in other territories.
“With this offer we want to make it more accessible to the greatest number throughout the approaching summer vacation,” SCE Europe VP Philippe Cardon explained.
A spokesperson for SCE UK added "This is a limited retail price promotion that is only available for a short space of time in France."

The UK hard drive market performed well in the first four months of the year, boosted by lowered prices and a steady recovery from the Thailand floods.
According to figures from Context, the UK HDD market grew by 78 per cent with sales of 1TB drives growing by 52 per cent, compared to just 31 per cent across the rest of Europe.
In terms of product, 500GB capacity drives are continuing to perform well but the primary mover has been the 1TB category which has seen a sales spike as prices have been reduced by 25 per cent – thought to have been spurred by a recovery in production following the Thailand floods.
In terms of companies, Seagate and Western Digital reportedly drove sales, with the two companies sharing a lead with 44 per cent market share each.
“Although average selling prices in April were still up 58% year on year, we are now seeing prices gradually on their way back down from the high November,” said Context’s enterprise analyst, Senthuran Premakumar.
“Going forward, we expect to see sales increasing further for both 1TB as well as other high capacity drives.”

Researchers at Kaspersky have issued further guidance to anyone who thinks their PC might be infected with the Flame virus.
According to a blog post made by the head of Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team, Alexander Gostev, the main warning sign of a present or past infection is the presence of a file called ~DEB93D.tmp.
Furthermore, if the registry contains files called mssecmgr.ocx or authpack.ocx then the system is currently infected.
The virus is able to download additional software components, likened to apps, to expand its capabilities and it is thought to be derived from or inspired by a piece of software called Flexible Lightweight Active Measurement Environment.
“The FLAME software is used to measure network characteristics by deploying measurement agents and collecting data in a central database. Despite some similarities, we think that this software is unrelated as it serves different objectives,” wrote Gostev.

This morning the ISFE released the new GameTrack data, which reveals that Angry Birds was the UK’s most popular game in Q1 2012, with ten per cent of the total market.
The reports, which ISFE commissioned Ipsos to produce, reveal some interesting statistics about the UK’s gaming habits, including the fact that 37 per cent of the UK population played games within the last 12 months, totalling 21 million people. The reports claim that half of all games played in the UK during Q1 2012 were apps.
It was also revealed that in the UK, 25 per cent of the population plays games on PC or Mac. 68 per cent of UK kids play packaged goods games. 65 per cent play online games. 43 per cent play apps. 31 per cent play all three.
The reports claim to be the most detailed and comprehensive view of the market, including every platform and kind of game out there. It shows that although the app market is growing, there is still a huge percentage of the population that play packaged and online PC games.

Around 40 per cent of the accounts on Facebook and Twitter and eight per cent of messages are spam.
According to Business Week, the volume of spam on social networks has been increasing recently as the efficacy of using social networks to propagate spam has eclipsed email.
A common tactic used is that of ‘likejacking’ - a process whereby the user is encouraged to Like a page before being granted access to a video or where clicking a link also adds a Like to spam content – which is thought to have affected over 280,000 Facebook users.
The social networks are now acting to combat the spam though. Both Facebook and Twitter have initiated legal action against companies that are suspected of spam. In a case against two companies called Skootle and JL4 Web Solutions, Twitter claims that it has spend $700,000 trying to combat the spam that the defendants created.
