Nintendo exclusives make up half of Top 10

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has returned to the number one position in the UK's All Formats Top 40 chart according to data released by Chart Track.

It is the third different title to reach the top spot so far this year in as many weeks, as Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare dropped to second place.

Nintendo exclusives - either for Wii or DS - made up over half of the All Formats Top 10 charts for the first time since September 2007.

With the exception of The Simpsons Game, which moved up one place, every multi-format game in the top 10 lost sales. Sega's Ghost Squad and Capcom's Zack & Wiki debuted in the Top 40 charts at number 20 and 25, respectively.

For the week ended January 19, the top selling games in the UK were:

    1. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
    2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
    3. The Simpsons Game
    4. Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training
    5. More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima
    6. Assassin's Creed
    7. FIFA 08
    8. Super Mario Galaxy
    9. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
    10. Wii Play

Without a 3G iPhone announcement at MacWorld, Apple remains focused on increasing the penetration of their generation-one handset. True to the rumors circulating the intertubes last week, AT&T is now offering the iPhone to business customers. Plans break down as follows:

2 year commitment, voice service, and data plan required

$45 per month for unlimited data, visual voicemail, and 200 SMSes; $55 ups the SMS limit to 1,500; $65 for unlimited everything
An extra $25 per month nabs a 20MB montly data plan good for 29 countries, $60 per month ups the limit to 50MB

Activate by 31 March and qualified accounts will receive a service credit of $25 per month good through 31 December, 2008 -- yeah, that's a sweet deal

We have a funny feeling that the timing of this has something to do with IBM's imminent announcement of Lotus Notes mail for the iPhone. Now get on the horn to IT, they'll be dreading your call.

So the rising discontent with Apple's new habit of selective feature enabling got us thinking -- while we're not experts on the subject, the generally accepted reasoning for the $20 iPod touch upgrade fee is the accounting requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act: iPhone and Apple TV updates are free since revenue from those products is realized as a subscription over a period of time, but iPod touch updates can't be free since Apple just records that revenue directly. That certainly makes sense to us when applied to things like the 802.11n Enabler, which was trivially cheap and turned on unadvertised hardware features, but it strikes us as being a pretty big stretch when applied to a $20 package of new software applications. iPod name or no, the iPod touch is essentially a little computer, and the whole purpose of software is to enable "significant unadvertised new features" on a computer. For Apple (or anyone) to say that a mail app is a "significant new feature" for a computer is pushing the line just a bit far, and it makes us wonder how the company accounts for new versions of iTunes, QuickTime, and Safari, each of which add new features to already-sold Macs -- and how things are going to play out when the iPhone / iPod touch SDK is released next month. We've got a call into Apple to get to the bottom of it all, we'll let you know what (if anything) we find out.

Although Japan Today doesn't realize that Blu-ray discs aren't DVDs, they do have some interesting stats that shed some light on why Warner might have chose to go BD exclusive. The report is from a study of 2,300 Japaneese electronic retailers, and shows that 90-percent of HD movie player sales -- not counting the PS3 -- were owned by Blu-ray. The other interesting thing to note is that although Americans couldn't care less about recording to shiny round discs, the Japanese continue to love it, and HD disc recorder sales were up to 20-percent in November and December from 6.1-percent in October. Leading the way in recorder sales was Sony, followed by Panasonic and Sharp.

Dark Alex is back with a new version of the Universal Unbricker and Custom Firmware Installer for the PSP

    Changes in version 4

    • - Installer now checks if user has a custom theme installed, and ask him to disable it before running the program.
    • - the PSN DRM file in flash2 (act.dat) is now backuped during ms creation and restored in the unbrick.
    • - flash2 is now formatted too.
    • - Now installs 3.80 M33-5 instead of 3.71 M33-3.

    Installation:

    - If you have already a pandora ms, don't do this part. Otherwise,
format an ms using c+d mspformat or any other tool that allows to move
partition to ~250kb from first sector

Remove ms, usb and connect again usb and ms.
    Make PSP and PSP/GAME dirs.
    • - Copy despertar_cementerio to PSP/GAME/
    • - Download 1.50, 3.40 and 3.80 update eboots and copy them to ms root with
      150.PBP, 340.PBP and 380.PBP names.
    • - If you have a PTF custom theme set, quit it before running the program.
    • - Use the app under a cfw with 2.x or 3.x kernel (be sure that kernel is
selected on recovery to the correct one (2.x or 3.x))
    • - Once finished, u will have msipl.bin on root. If you already have a pandora
ms, you don't have to do this step (ipl doesn't changes lol), otherwise,
use c+d msinst to install ipl on ms; or use dd command from unix, or any
hex-edit program to write on sector 16 on the physical drive.
    • - Now you can delete 340 and 150 PBP's, as they won't be used more; but 380.PBP
will be used for unbricker, so don't delete it.
    • - Now you have an universal pandora ms ready to go, and you just need a proper
battery. If you have 1.50 kernel access, use c+d tool. Otherwise, use corly149 tool.

Battery and ms will work on all psp and slims to this date.

    Unbricking:
    • - Press X to install 3.80M33.
    • - Press O to install original 3.80
    • - Press [] to dump nand to nand-dump.bin. When done, psp will auto shutdown.
    • - Press L+R+HOME+start to restore nand from nand-dump.bin

This proccess is very dangerous, and you should *just* use it if it's your
last chance to get it working.

This is a physical restore process (not a logical one), and will try to make
a 100% exact clon of the dump.

If you are working with a dump that isn't yours, you will get either a brick
or a corrupt idstorage, depending on the firmware.

If while you are restoring your psp have got any damaged block more than
when you dumped it, you might also get a brick, depending on what block is it.

Works for both PSP and PSP Slim.

Note: If you are gonna use the memory stick to restore a psp other than the one that created it,
check if the file /registry/act.dat exists in the ms. If it exists, remove it, otherwise the restored psp may not be able
to buy psn games until the user doesn't delete from flash2 the act.dat of the other psp. (act.dat files are unique for each psp).

Note that act.dat will be restored to the moment of the MS creation.
If you have bought other PSN game later, the act.dat file may have changed and if you restore the old one, you may loose the latest bought game.
Backup flash2:/act.dat each time after you buy something from the PSN!

Rogue Squadron developer Factor 5 is developing a Wii iteration of Kid Icarus, according to one bold report.

Factor 5 president Julian Eggebrecht confirmed last week that the company is developing a brand new Wii title that wouldn't use old GameCube technology.

Kombo doesn't state who the sources might be and reveals no other details on the project, but a few things ring true. Icarus protagonist Pit will appear in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Brawl for one, and also Shigeru Miyamoto speculated at E3 2005 that the franchise could come to Wii at a later date.

Still, we're not taking this as anything but a rumour for now. We've made a few calls and left a few voice mails. ...

It's time to get all excited about that game you'll (probably) never play. A 'leaked' video of GoldenEye XBLA has once again put Rare's N64 gem under the spotlight.

The supposed XBLA footage shows Bond running through the Missile Silo level with the trusty KF7 Soviet.

The textures and gun look like they've been given a polish over, and if you watch through to the end you'll notice a B-button icon on the menu screen (to the lower right), and a text box that reads: "saving content, please don't not turn off your console."

They could be clues pointing to it being genuine, but as sceptics we would point out that everything in the video could be easily faked using a re-textured, modded version of the N64 ROM running on a PC emulator. By 'easily', we actually mean by homebrew ninjas.

The sad fact is that if there's a lot of hype over anything the gaming world, there are loners out there who'd love nothing more than putting time into making something like this. It must make them feel special to get on YouTube. ...
