The ability to play PlayStation 3 dragon-combat game Lair on the PSP has generated plenty of headlines in recent days. What's gained much less attention, however, is the fact that the feature is potentially available for all PlayStation 3 games.

Indeed when checking up on the Lair situation with a Sony technical insider, we got the response: "It's a nice start. Over time, I'm sure we'll have more advanced features."

The core of this PS3-PSP interaction is the PlayStation 3's Remote Play functionality, which allows registered PSPs (you have to initially connect your PSP to your PS3 via USB to register it) to access media such as movies or TV programmes held on the PS3 hard drive, or which are being accessed in real-time on the PS3.

The ability to play PS3 games on your PSP is obviously a more complex technical step, but fundamentally, it can still be reduced to the ability of the PS3 to stream video footage across a wireless network.

So when you're 'playing' Lair on your PSP, the game's not actually running on the PSP's processors. In this case – just like when watching a film that's running on your PS3 – the PSP is merely being used as a display device, albeit one that enables the interactivity of button presses (whether that be to pause the video stream or rotate the in-game camera) with a small enough latency to make playing a game manageable.

That's the reason any PlayStation 3 game could enable the feature, as long as duties such as remapping the second analogue joystick or second shoulder buttons to the PSP's buttons are carried out.

Still, it seems unlikely it would be appropriate for all PS3 games, even if developers wanted to enable the ability (significantly, it is something that's officially supported within Sony's PS3 software development kit).

For example, the latency of most domestic wireless networks would struggle to provide the fluidity required for beat-'em-ups such as Virtua Fighter 5 or Tekken 6. Conversely, a more sedate 30 frames per second experience such as Lair is ideal.

Other examples of how the technology could be employed have already been sowcased by Sony (although yet to be fulfilled), and include the use of PSP as a rear view mirror in racing games such as Gran Turismo.

Expect to hear much more about PS3-PSP interoperability in the coming months as Sony starts to ramp up its Christmas marketing campaign for both platforms.

Sony is transforming the PlayStation 3 into a digital video recorder, bolstering the game console's credentials as a flexible multimedia hub for the living room.

PlayTV is little black box that connects to PS3 and contains twin high-definition digital television tuners. Users can watch one channel while recording another, and also pause live TV.

PlayTV also expands the capabilities of the PlayStation Portable game console. PSP owners with a PS3 connected online to the internet can now watch live or recorded programs on the handheld device whenever they're near a wi-fi hot spot.

Alternatively, users can transfer TV programs for viewing on the PSP wherever they go, saved onto a memory stick.

Sony says PlayTV will be released in Australia next year, but its implementation could be hamstrung by squabbling over access to the electronic program guides that form the heart of Personal Video Recorder (PVR) functionality.

The upside for Sony is that sales of PVRs in Australia are still relatively low, so there is a huge opportunity to capture a sizeable new market.

PS3's multimedia capabilities include playing high-definition Blu-ray films, DVDs and music CDs, streaming video, photos and music from PCs, and web browsing.

Early PS3 sales in Australia have been solid, with more than 60,000 sold in the first four months, but critics have bemoaned the console's high price and limited software range.

Instead of dropping the price, Sony last month added the console's two bestselling games and an additional controller to the $999 bundle.

More than 65 titles will be available on PS3 before Christmas, including Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Assassin's Creed, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, SingStar, Haze, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Next year's release schedule is stronger, with blockbusters including Rock Band, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto IV, LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5 and Killzone2.

    From Gamespot:

Halo 3 Epsilon cheaters banned until 9999 AD

Microsoft is apparently making strong examples of anyone trying to sneak into the Halo 3 Epsilon test. The crackdown came to light when a 17-year-old Minnesotan who goes by the handle "Scar" posted a tale of woe on the forums of the Halo-focused modding site Se7ensins.com. His post was accompanied by a photo of his ban notice from Xbox Live, which expires on December 31, 9999 AD--some 7,447 years after the events in Halo are supposed to take place.

How did the eternal banhammer fall on Scar? "A friend said he got the Epsilon from a friend and offered me to glitch it onto my account with what you call the two-controller exploit," he told GameSpot. "I downloaded it from Marketplace and played it for maybe six hours or so all alone, in custom games and campaign. [Then] it would kick me offline every time i tried to play Epsilon. It wasn't until the next day when i signed on that I found out i got banned."

Despite being a self-described "achievement whore" with a GamerScore of over 61,000, Scar--who doesn't want his real name made public--has no plans to appeal his ban. "Other people i know that had this happen to them at the same time as me called support and had no luck," he rued. "I know of at least 10 others that downloaded it and got banned till 9999."

When asked for comment, reps for Microsoft said the company was not officially commenting on the 7,992 year bans. However, a source close to Bungie said the ban screen "looked legit," wryly adding, "Sorry, great, great, great, great, grandkids."

Sony Ericsson will unveil a gaming phone at the Mobility World Congress, ME understands.
Whispers that the handset manufacturer might be planning a device based around gaming functions have been circulating for years, especially after the success of its Cyber-shot imaging range and Walkman music family.

There’s been feverish speculation that the company is working on a PlayStation-branded phone – and insiders suggest this is being explored.

However, ME understands that the forthcoming device will not be PSP branded and will be unveiled in February.

It will offer a games-oriented user interface and styling, and comprise technical innovations such as motion-sensitivity, which will pave the way for Wii-like gameplay on a handset.

The speculation hardened a year ago when Sony Ericsson’s design guru, Rikko Sakaguchi, hinted he was working on a gaming concept. Earlier this summer, the blogs re-printed what were said to be drawings of a prototype. SE has enjoyed huge success with Cyber-shot and Walkman phones – and has even launched a Bravia-branded phone in Japan.

The drive towards a mobile gaming handset, or at least strategy, is certainly building among the hardware vendors. In November, Nokia will launch its new N-Gage platform – not a device this time, but a storefront that connects to state-of-the-art community-led games. ...

Another week, another three for the Virtual Console... Wait, no, what? There's five! All Mega Drive?

True, there they are, with Sonic The Hedgehog 3 out in front. This one was bigger and faster than the rest, and introduced lots of bits and pieces like musical snippets and cut-scenes that we now associate with the series.

Next up is the fantastic but fiendishly difficult Ghouls 'n' Ghosts. It's a 2D platform game which pops you in the metallic boots of King Arthur, who just so happens to be on a quest to rescue the princess from a horde of nasty zombie enemies. It's had loads of ports over time, including the most recent version on PSP, which reviewed pretty well.

But perhaps you want to liberate a city from a plague of crime, because we all know it never pays. If you do, then you'll want ESWAT: City Under Siege. Just hop into your futuristic police costume and get to it, upgrading your weapons and eventually turning into a cyborg as you go.

Or how about a dungeon crawling role-playing game. It just so happens that Shining in the Darkness fits that bill. Here you'll have to save the world from an evil fellow by trawling the dank and dark caves of the world and battling fantasy creatures. And did you know that Shining was also one of the very first games to use 3D turn-based battles? No, nor did we. Thank you Wikipedia.

Or, if none of that takes your fancy, then maybe something with a little more strategy is your thing. Oh look, there's Crack Down, just the thing - and not related in any way to the excellent 360 game you might have seen in shops. Your charge is to save the world from evil cyborgs by infiltrating and destroying their facilities by carefully placing bombs, as well as blasting cannons and shooting firearms to help you wipe the pseudo-robots from the Earth.

All of these former Mega Drive classics will cost you 800 points each (GBP 5.60 / EUR 8) in the Wii Store. ...

Nervegas has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for the iPhone:

NES.app uses the popular InfoNES emulation core to mimic the 6502 processor in a Nintendo Entertainment System, allowing you to play ROM dumps of games designed for the NES console. ROM dumps are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM dump of any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.

NES.app started as a fork based on the same original code as iPhoneNES, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features such as sound, game genie, saved games, and full screen support.

1.1.0 [nervegas] Removed unnecessary mutex locking for layer write
Draw black box around emulator screen to prevent see-thru
Improved sound quality slightly by precaching more audio
Added status bar icons (for suspend)
    Added more debugging
    Removed unnecessary screenUpdateLock
    Corrected Bubble Bobble color palette
    Demand direct installation
    Corrected intermittent crashing issues
