So I was at my old GameStop on Saturday, catching up with the news and trying to see if my former assistant manager's mom was still single, when one of the employees mentioned Assassin's Creed for the Nintendo DS. The DS? I had not heard of such an animal, but they showed me in their computer - Assassin's Creed Nintendo DS, SKU number 180408, with an expected ship date of the 26th of September. Retailing for $29.99, the game is, like everything at GameStop, available for preorder. It isn't on their website, but give your nearest store a call.

While I was pondering this over the weekend, a Kotakuite named Eric sent us a link to GameFly, who has the game listed for pre-rental. A coincidence? A conspiracy? Wishful thinking?

We'll be following up on this with Ubisoft later today. In the meantime, I'm sure GameStop won't mind you dropping $5 on the title, whether or not it actually exists.

Bloomberg is reporting on the hippest trend in publishing, no longer sitting on your ass when it comes to Wii development. After many publishers and developers chose the PLAYSTATION 3 to be the lead horse in the console race, it seems that everyone and their parent corporation is shifting priorities to get Wii product out the door.

Seriously. No one watched the DS, generally considered a gimmick device before launch, selling to every man, woman, and child capable of holding a stylus?

According to Bloomberg, a lack of EA games for the Wii launch "contributed to a 25 percent drop in sales in February from a year earlier." That's a lot of billions of dollars.

But it's not just EA. Activision, Take-Two and especially Ubisoft are all on board and in full waggle mode. I guess this really does mean no Gamecube-like drought. Let's just hope these aren't "fourth string" teams porting the next great Wii game. ...

The excellent Siliconera points out that Spectral Vs. Generations, the 2D fighting game based on Idea Factory characters, and developed by the taiwanese, SNK-like IGS is hitting europe, thanks to Midas Interactive. What they failed to mention though, is that the company is only bringing out the PSP version, not the PS2 one. This is good news if you're a fan of SvG, though I don't think anyone particluarly is, since this means there's no regional lockout to keep you from playing. The downside is that...you have to play it on a PSP. Since it retails for only 20 euros, it may still be worth a look

The PC Engine Modem, or Tsuushin Booster, is a rare beast. According to at least one Japanese source 20-30 found their way into the hands of PCE fans for official testing. They were allowed to keep them. A further hundred, the story goes, were produced right before the peripheral was due to be released. Before the assembly line kicked into gear, the modem was canceled and the last hundred ordered destroyed. Some weren't, and occasionally pop up on Yahoo auctions. The PCE Modem is, you might agree, one of the rarest production accessories.

Chris Covell has purchased a Tsuushin Booster, for an undisclosed but no doubt ungodly sum, and put the entire thing online for our enjoyment.

While you're on his site, you might check out some of the other neat stuff he's got: Sega Master System hacks, a stack of prototypes and unreleased software from vintage game mags, the very rare Devil's Crush soundtrack CD, or perhaps his RGB page, or even his picross-for-PCEngine game, Tongueman's Logic.

In late 2006, those who believe that all downloadable content for the Xbox 360 should be free thought they had found the perfect spokespeople in Epic Games. At the Spike TV Video Game Awards, where Gears of War had just scooped up four awards, Epic president Mike Capps said, "We always take care of our customers, we always give them stuff for free, and we're going to keep doing that forever. That's how we do it. This is Epic."

Unfortunately, it appears that it isn't just Epic who calls the shots. Speaking on the 1up Podcast, Epic vice president Mark Rein and CEO Tim Sweeney dropped the bomb that upcoming map packs for the shooter actually won't be free...at first.

This caused a bit of an uproar among Gearheads, who took to the forums at EvilAvatar to voice their displeasure. Rein responded to put out the fires, clarifying that the map packs would follow a similar business model used with the bonus multiplayer maps released for Halo 2.

"Epic thinks the way to maximize the return on Gears of War is to give the maps away for free and Microsoft thinks the way to maximize the return on Gears of War is to sell the maps," said Rein. "So what we’ve agreed to do is to put these maps on sale at a reasonable price then make them free a few months later. They did this with the original Halo2 map pack and it was a huge success. Lots of people bought the maps and lots of people downloaded them when they became free. That’s what is going to happen and it seems like a fair compromise for both companies and a win-win for Gears players."

Rein also said that the next map pack will feature four multiplayer maps, but was unable to give a price or release period for the download. A Gears of War update, which adds the new Annex gametype, will be available for free later this afternoon. ...

One week ago, Gears of War fans got in a tizzy when vice president Mark Rein revealed that the game's next update was "almost here." Rein said the update was out of Epic's hands and in the final stages of Microsoft's certification process.

Today, Microsoft announced that it has given the update the thumbs up and will release it over Xbox Live Marketplace at 4 p.m. PDT.

Not just a few tweaks to bugs, the update will add a new multiplayer mode called Annex. In Annex, two teams will battle to occupy key map locations like a standard King of the Hill or Domination match. Each map contains two to five key locations, and throughout the match the area to be controlled will move.

Also included in the update is VGA cable support, tweaks to the Boomshot and Hammer of Dawn weapons, and several bug and exploit fixes.

The update is free, unlike other Gears of War content which was recently revealed to be offered initially at a "reasonable price" before being free months down the line. ...

If you're one of the few large-handed gamers out there still pining for the bulk-tastic days of the original Xbox controller, then you're sure to have a great time with Microsoft's new "Text Input Device" QWERTY thumb keyboard add-on. The bulk of the TID is all at the base, so it shouldn't be a deal breaker for the small handed, but we'll have to get this in hand to know just how ergonomic it's going to be to type with. An anonymous tipster, who spotted this before it went official, had these encouraging words to say: "The thumboard beats the hell out of the one on my BlackJack, and once they let me play with it I didn't want to put it down." We wouldn't really say TID vs. BlackJack is the ultimate comparison, but it at least sounds like the tipster had a good time. ...
