Epic Games has detailed the new Gears of War 'Annex' game mode, which will be arriving in via an Xbox Live update.

It all sounds very familiar if you're an FPS fan; the game mode involves taking control of key locations and holding them as a team to rack up points, and whichever team reaches the target point count first wins. It's all a bit like King of the Hill then, isn't it?

Each map will contain a number of control points though only one will be in contest at any given time. Once a team has exhausted the allotted 60 points from a control point another will be selected for overtaking at random somewhere else on the map.

Respawns will also be limited to 15 second waves and winning scores ranging from a fast-paced 120 or drawn-out 480 - though Epic says there are plenty of variables to tinker with.

Although we were expecting something a bit more original than a re-packaged Halo/Goldeneye/Every other FPS game mode, Annox does sound like good fun - and will at least get us playing Gears again.

It's now been pulled from the official website, but Epic says the update will be available next week on April 9. We'll keep you posted if anything changes.

WWII FPS series, Brothers in Arms, is on its way to Wii and DS and we have the first shots of the game running on the two-screen handheld.

These episodes of the series will follow Sergeants Baker and Hartsock as they lead their squad of paratroopers during the chaotic Normandy invasion.

Obviously, aiming on the Wii version, titled Brothers in Arms: Double Time, is done with the Wii Remote, but more interestingly you will be moving the Remote to make hand signals to squad mates to communicate during the heat of battle.

Brothers in Arms DS has you using the stylus to aim, similarly to Metroid Prime Hunters - which is currently the shooter to beat.

But these DS shots, which show a mix of shooting and driving action, are looking promising.

Look out for BiA DS in Summer, and the Wii version a few months later in Autumn.

    via Nintendo Wii Fanboy

eSOL, a company that offers engineering solutions for companies that look to outsource that stuff, have just announced that Nintendo is using their "PrFILE2" FAT file system and "PrUSB/Host" USB host stack middleware products. What does this mean for us? Well, it could mean plenty of things.

First of all, each technology allows for a different aspect of the Wii to be utilized. The company's "PrFILE2" file system provides "file management functions which read and write data of theSD memory card, as well as other media." This could mean any number of things; Nintendo could even see eSOL's middleware tech as allowing faster read and write speeds to the SD card slot on the Wii. Nintendo could also have plans for using the file system as apart of a future add-on for the system. Really, speculation is the only thing to reign here.

eSOL's "PrUSB" USB Host stack is where we think this story gets more interesting. In adding their tech for more USB functionality in the Wii, it's possible Nintendo could be looking to issue their own USB HDDs down the road. Or, they could have ideas for other peripherals. Again, speculation is the name of the game here.

Finally, our hopes and dreams of Nintendo performing a system update on everyone's Wii, allowing for support of third-party USB HDDs, gain some more credibility. What else would Nintendo be acquiring eSOL's USB tech for? Certainly this is the most far-fetched idea of ours, as if anyone is going to make a profit on adding the functionality for USB HDD support on the Wii, it's going to be Nintendo.

Famitsu publisher Enterbrain decided to toss out some numbers regarding the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. Seems the Wii is outselling the PS3 by two to one in Japan. Now, now, put those jeers and stabbing comments away, ladies and gents. Two to one... in Japan. Japan, where the Wii is incredibly huge. Just two to one. Monetarily, the two are on equal grounds. Numerically, it's double. The gap used to be much, much larger -- slightly beyond the four to one ratio by the end of January.

Does this mean the fad for the Wii is dying down? Or that the PS3 is picking up sales? We can't say that "everyone already has a Wii now" because look at the sales of the Nintendo DS -- always on top of the sales charts. Maybe Nintendo is severely limiting supply. Whatever the case, it's good to know that the gap is narrowing and as more games come out for both systems, we'll see a much tighter struggle for market power in Japan. ...

It's been a little while but Bungie has finally opened its big gob to talk more about that Xbox 360 shooter it's working on - and not on the usual stage of its weekly community update either.

Speaking in the latest issue of Gamepro, Bungie fields a few of the mag's questions on the Halo 3's arsenal, including what's happened to Halo 2's SMGs now that the good old assault rifle is back in the spotlight.

"SMGs are still there, tweaked slightly, but not dramatically," says Bungie.net content producer Frank O' Connor. "The purpose of the AR is to fill a void, or rather, a vital role. A weapon that is not only useful to spawn with, but is flexible and powerful enough that you might stick with it rather than favouring another type of weapon."

"That weapon will be honed to a glossy sheen by launch, but bluntly, it's about perfect right now. That of course is an opinion, but believe me, it's balanced by knowing what our audience wants"

'O Connor also reveals there are changes ahead for the Chief's grenades: "Players will have plentiful grenade options. More on that soon. But grenades have an added layer of strategy this time around. Picking role-specific 'nades is important, but silkily natural."

The Brute Spiker rifle meanwhile can apparently be dual-wielded by the Chief and the Brute Shot is "almost certain" to make a return.

"The Needler has gone through significant changes," the Bungie man continues. "I'll call them improvements. The instant death attack - filling your opponent with a certain number of consecutive crystal-shards - is being tuned. But yes, it will still assplode your face."

All this talk of guns and 'nades has got us itching for the multiplayer beta again - so where is it, Mr. Bungie? "The file will be exactly 873.46 megs and...I'm kidding. Still being figured out, but we'll keep you posted." And the wait goes on... ...

A minor glitch that prevented gamers from using an unlockable dashboard theme and gamer pictures in Jetpack Refuelled has been fixed with a new update.

Rare released an official statement on its official site, acknowledging the technical blip, and apologised.

To install the update you are actually required to delete the game you have already downloaded and completely re-download the now-fixed version.

Don't worry though, it won't cost you a penny, and your save game and leaderboard status will remain intact.

If you're dubious of the whole process, Rare has kindly supplied a step-by-step tutorial. They're nice like that. ...

Sony has sent word of their new offerings for the US PlayStation Network today. Most importantly for racing fans, Gran Turismo HD Concept will be upgraded for free to version 1.2, which enables force feedback through Logitech steering wheel peripherals. (European gamers have been enjoying GTHD 1.2 since the console's launch in the region.)

The Grand Theft Auto IV trailer is also available for download in high definition, as is the Armored Core 4 video. Microsoft's Peter Moore, proud that Xbox Live got the GTAIV trailer up before Sony, has added yet another tattoo on his arm to add to his collection of AAA-titled inkings.

All of the content will be available free of charge and should be online sometime today. ...
