Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS) and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix™ videogame is in development. The game is scheduled for a July 2007 release to coincide with the Warner Bros. Pictures film based on J.K. Rowling's fifth book of the same title.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the first in the franchise that we have developed for the next generation consoles," said Harvey Elliott, Executive Producer at EA UK. "Together with current generation versions, we are creating an immersive and, above all, faithful Harry Potter experience that will both accurately reflect the world showcased in the film and also delight fans of all ages."

"Working with EA, we look forward to offering fans the most authentic Harry Potter game to date, one which captures the compelling story of the fiction and high visual quality of the movie," said Jason Hall, Senior Vice President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "After reading the book and seeing the film, fans will be able to take advantage of the complete interactive experience with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix game."

The close and synergistic relationship between book, film and videogame is more defined in the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix videogame than ever before. Players will be able to explore the many key locations within Hogwarts in minute detail, each one a visual match to its film equivalent, while being engrossed in the thrilling adventures outlined in the rich narrative of the book.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry returns for his fifth year of study at Hogwarts and discovers that much of the wizarding community has been denied the truth about the teenager’s recent encounter with the evil Lord Voldemort. Fearing that Hogwarts’ venerable Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, is lying about Voldemort’s return in order to undermine his power and take his job, the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, appoints a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher to keep watch over Dumbledore and the Hogwarts students. But Professor Dolores Umbridge’s Ministry-approved course of defensive magic leaves the young wizards woefully unprepared to defend themselves against the dark forces threatening them and the entire wizarding community, so at the prompting of his friends Hermione and Ron, Harry takes matters into his own hands. Meeting secretly with a small group of students who name themselves “Dumbledore’s Army,” Harry teaches them how to defend themselves against the Dark Arts, preparing the courageous young wizards for the extraordinary battle that lies ahead.

With the ability to play multiple characters, including Harry Potter, Dumbledore and Sirius Black, the videogame of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix offers fans the opportunity to wield a wand, explore all around Hogwarts, and experience one of the most exciting and dangerous years in the life of the Boy Who Lived.

Under development by EA's UK Studio, the team behind the worldwide success of the Harry Potter library of games, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is scheduled for release for the Nintendo Wii™, PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360™, PlayStation®2, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable), Nintendo DS™, Game Boy® Advance, and Windows PC.

UPDATE Sony's head of UK PR David Wilson has given CVG the following statement:

"PS one title backward compatibility has not changed and there will be a limited number of PS2 titles compatible - but PS3 is defined by key features such as the CELL broadband engine, its Blu-ray drive, the SIXAXIS Controller and its ability to output full 1080P HD game content which makes it an entertainment system for the future, without equal. Backwards compatibility is important but it does not define the PS3 in the same way as the other features do.

"We have been assessing the extent of backward compatibility, and will continue to do so right up until launch. It is therefore not possible to provide a specific number of backwards compatible titles at this stage. Users will be able to check whether their titles are compatible with PS3 by checking the list of compatible titles at http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc. This site will be available on March 23 to meet launch day.

"PS one titles remain backwards compatible and we will continue to assess the compatibility of PS2 titles right up until launch. We will continue to offer firmware upgrades to increase the number of titles that are compatible, but rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.

"Whilst in the longer term these production related cost reductions will enable us to reduce the cost of PS3 to consumers (in the same way we have done with PS2 over its 6 year lifetime to date) SCE has no immediate plans for any price reduction on the platform.

"We will continue to assess the compatibility of existing and new PS2 titles, both first and third party." ...

Lucas has released a new version of the application formerly known as Licks Media Player, heres whats new:

Some small bugs fixed, some minor tweaks and optimizations. I've played for several hours, with no problems, tested mp3, ogg, flac and all were fine. Tested on R4 (dldi) and M3 SD (no dldi).

I'm also thinking of the new features for the next version, so if you want to suggest anything, now is the time. Please, for this next version, just small features, but features that may be useful. No video or streaming support yet.

    New game from Escamuche:

    Heres the info:

A side scroller space shooter. Created with the fantastic PAlib and devkitpro as an experiment to learn nds programming. Currently is far from finished, but you can play a bit (the first level). Gameplay needs to be adjusted (and graphics too!). It has some intro scenes to introduce the background story and characters.

The Japanese seem to have a thing for learning the English language without actually learning it. That means big business for dictionary makers and language schools. And, of course, for Nintendo, maker of the game machine that all those English learners seem to own: the DS.

Last year's Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training Eigo Zuke, whose name is commonly translated here at IGN as "DS Training For Adults Who Aren't Good at English: English Language Trainer," was one of the best selling "non-games" for the DS. Just as it did with Brain Age, Nintendo is adding a "Motto" (Japanese for "More") to the title and having one more go at sorta-kinda teaching the Japanese how to speak English.

Nintendo is packing a lot into the sequel. Some 400 conversation situations, covering phone calls, train station announcements and customer/clerk dialogue, are included. The title also promises to improve real-life listening skills by adding environmental sounds and accents to dictation sequences.

Fully titled Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training Motto Eigo Zuke, the sequel will hit Japan on 3/29. We expect another million seller for Nintendo, but we don't expect a million Japanese people to actually start speaking English better. ...

Looks like Japan is set to get yet another training game (our second announced today!). What gives? The rest of us want to become better cooks and have more common sense as well. Maybe someday ....

The latest training game from Konami looks to be an aid to practicing yoga. What a great way to promote fitness! Further, the portability of the DS makes this pretty practical, as you can just pack it up with your yoga mat, and bam! You're ready to go get bendy, wherever and however you want.

We may not be marketing experts here at the Fanboy, but we would think that something like this could really help expand the gaming market in the U.S. Perhaps if the Wii has a few fitness-themed titles that enjoy success with the soccer mom crowd, we'll start seeing a little more demand for something like a yoga trainer. ...

Have we not shown enough enthusiasm for Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings? Does Square Enix think that we're not writhing with anticipation over this game? We thought it was pretty clear that we'll be there on day one with our faces pressed to the door, but apparently someone thinks that we still need to be lured in with a bevy of gorgeous videos. Maybe we should play hard to get more often.

Jeux France has the latest embedded on their site, as well as some new screens. Go check it out, because every day is a good day for a little Final Fantasy.

    Fru.T Bunn posted this news:

Hi everyone, although I haven't had time to finish the file selector yet, I've decided to release a new version of BeebEm 'as is'.

BeebEm runs really well with the gmenu2x selector, so I consider it usable enough to release a new version of the emulator now! I'll also release an update as soon as the internal file selector is finished.

    New features:

    * No longer dependant on a hardwired directory, should now install anywhere on your SD card.

    * Fully working virtual keyboard with excellent graphics by Rooster.

    * Configuration pages, simply click the options you want enabled and off you go!

    * A Button mapper, no more messing about with configuration files! Simply use the built in mapper and click save - bingo!

    * You can now change the audio volume via the user interface, so the volume is no longer fixed for 'flipped' mode games (or if you remap the volume buttons).

    * I've added a few (free) games to get newbies started: Ball Game by Dominic Beesley: http://www.brahms.demon.co.uk/software/bbc/index.html, and OddJob by Mike Wyatt: http://www.mikebuk.dsl.pipex.com/beebem/software.html.

    Limitations:

    * You will need to install gmenu2x or something simular and configure beebem.gpe to start-up with the Selector Browser:

Press 'SELECT' over the beebem.gpe application in gmenu2x and then configure the 'Selector Directory' (probably as "/mnt/sd/beebem04/discs/") and set 'Selector Browser' to "ON". You should also use "ssd, dsd" as the 'Selector Filter' (to stop gmenu from listing any possible .kbd files you may create).
