Xbox 360 has received what Microsoft terms a "vigorous system-wide update", the company splurging no less than 125 upgrades for its next-gen console which are now (or very shortly today) available for free via Xbox Live Silver and Gold levels of service.

Proudly declaring that the new update contains "features and enhancements adding to Xbox 360's sheer power, stunning high-definition graphics, rich online capabilities and innovative media offerings delivering a digital gaming and entertainment experience that simply can't be matched" - phew! - Microsoft informs that it's 'no hard drive required' to take advantage of the update and that it'll take under a minute to download the update and gain access to all the new stuff.

A full list of the content in the update can be found on the official Xbox website, but here's a few of the new features that Microsoft is highlighting:

    Xbox Live Marketplace Enhancements

New background download manager gives gamers the ability to queue up and download six high definition items at a time including playable game demos, Xbox Live Arcade games, music videos and movie trailers while actively playing games or browsing the dashboard. As an added benefit, if gamers engage in multiplayer gameplay while downloads are in process, the new background download manager will automatically pause the download queue until the multiplayer session is complete ensuring a continuously optimal gameplay experience.

Updated Xbox Live Marketplace menus makes it easier for players to find and store all of their gaming and entertainment content. This includes the addition of new menus for media and entertainment content as well as enhanced menus making it easier for gamers to find what's new in each section as well as a quick view at all downloads by category.

Full remote control features for Xbox Live Marketplace videos allow gamers to fast forward and rewind at various speeds (2X-16X) during all videos downloaded from Marketplace.

    Music Player Improvements

Custom background music now continues to play without interruption during game loads and when transitioning from game to game or disc content.

During music play, the music playback screen now showcase the artist, song title and time remaining on the song along with a visualizer showing which song on the playlist or album is currently playing.

    DVD Movie Playback Upgrades

DVD movie bookmarking now allows gamers to pause a movie at any point, put in a game for gameplay and return to the movie at the exact point it left off.

Improved DVD movie playback for a smoother, higher quality viewing experience, including additional VGA support.

To all those who are new and old to homebrew heres just a notice to you all, the homebrew scene is about the reverse engineering of consoles so that we get a legal scene, we never support pirating of systems that are being emulated ie PSP isos on the PSP.

Although Sony do their very best to kill homebrew on the PSP they will really never succeed, at some stage there will open a new exploit that opens homebrew for newer firmware.

Remember real homebrew sites such as DCEmu, Emuholic, GP32X etc will never post about iso loaders etc,

ISO Loaders only make Sony more determined to kill off the homebrew scene and mark us all the same.

    ls5 posted this news/release:

    BatchDPG is a program I've been working on, because I was irritated with dpgenc for a number of reasons. However, as I simply do not know how to create a DPG header, it still uses dpgenc. So why did I create this program? Well, there are a number of reasons;
    - Support for pretty much any file you can play in DirectShow based media players such as Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic. This means you're not limited to AVI, WMV and MPG anymore.
    - It's very easy to add subtitles. Currently only SRT, SSA and ASS can be selected, but it's very simple for me to change the code so it supports others. Anything VSFilter (the best subtitle renderer around) can handle is therefore possible to add.
    - Better quality, both video and audio wise. Audio because a better resampler is used, and video because a better resizer is used and extra options are added to the mencoder commandline (mencoder is the program dpgenc uses for the video conversion to MPEG-1). In fact, you can choose different video quality settings according to your demands. The High settings is quite slow, so Medium is recommended, while Low should offer quality equivalent to the dpgenc default settings.
    - Set any bitrate you want. This means you can go above the normal limit of 256 too. Note that this is just a target bitrate. It will probably use less if you set it very high.
    - Max video bitrate option. This helps prevent those skips which sometimes occur. I havn't done any serious testing, but MoonShell seems to be able to handle a total bitrate of 512 kbps (video+audio) perfectly.
    - Automatic framerate calculation. This assumes Height * Width * FPS = 737280. So with a 256x192 (Fullscreen) video, this would result in the framerate being 15. A 256x144 (Widescreen) video would have a bitrate of 20.
    - Batch encoding! You can safely leave a number of files in the queue and it will automatically convert one after the other.

So how does it do all these things? Well, the first thing it does is create an Avisynth AVS file. Avisynth is a great video editing system, but unfortunately dpgenc can't directly open AVS files. To circumvent that, VFAPIConv is used to create a dummy AVI file, which dpgenc can read. BatchDPG then creates a dpgenc.ini with necessary instructions, after which it will start dpgenc itself and do the actual video and audio encoding.

The installation instructions are as followed:
    - Install Avisynth from http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=57023. Make sure to get the 2.5 version, not the 2.0.
    - Install this file to any place you like: http://rapidshare.de/files/22189277/BatchDPG.exe.html / http://www.mytempdir.com/715514.

Our Forum Member Dragula96 has released an updated version of his Star Wars game for the PSP, heres the details:

here is another unrelased project that never got published a few months ago.

this was written in lua but is a standalone eboot format... this is because i just found out lowser uses up reasorces (i think) and it slows down this game. anyway cant remember what i tweeked since v1.1 but the most noticeable is the addition of the "gradius" like powerup engine. again this was coded back in the day so code might not be optimized.

    Raphael posted this news/release:

Here it is, the long waited for subtitle addon for jonnys famous PMPMOD.
Thanks to jonny for his help.

    miniFAQ:
Q: What subtitle formats are supported?
A: Currently only MicroDVD format is supported, but more will follow.

Q: How much do subtitles affect performance of PMPMOD?
A: In a series of benchmarks with jonnys own benchmark code, it showed that subtitles will decrease the average fps by 0.3 at most.

Q: That's cool, but how do you do that?
A: Just some organized glyph caching in VRAM and my own fast glyph blitter.

    Q: How do I change the codepage/charset/language?
A: Inside the PMPMOD folder are different font files for different languages. To change the language, simply rename the 'font10.f' to 'font10_western.f' or alike and rename the right font to 'font10.f'.
If you want to display hebrew subtitles for example, rename 'font10_heb.f' to 'font10.f'

    Q: Why so complicated?
A: Because it's simpler for me and because most users most likely only need to do this step once, so this shouldn't be a problem. A possibility to choose language in the program will follow later.

    Q: What about other languages?
A: Each font file holds a charset of one Unicode page, ie 256 chars. The file is generated from Windows fonts using a small tool that I will release the next days. So if you have a font installed with your charset, you can create your own font file.
(Chinese and japanese kanji will need a little different approach - I will try to add support for these in the future)

Q: Arrrrgggg.... where is the (nice) GUI?!
A: Lost in space. No. It's not included because it will get completely rewritten from scratch with better skinning support, a option screen and nice graphics and fonts.

    News from SuccessHK

    [Wii] Nintendo Surprises Keep Coming
The Nintendo controller will feature a microphone and will store a user phonebook/address book while it will be used as a VoIP phone and will help gamers communicate while online without the need for a headset. All this comes thanks to a few Nintendo patents unveiled by revolution which demonstrate exactly how the microphone will be implemented.

Nintendo's controller surprises keep coming in and as the details are revealed so is an underlying theme to the company's plan for the device. The new details mention a microphone built-in to the headset which will allow the controller to be used as a straight-forward VoIP phone. The news also mentions that users will be able to use the phone for video calls although it does not clarify exactly how a camera will come into play in the setup. The interesting news however, relates to the phone/address book details which will be stored on the controller suggesting that Nintendo expects each user of the Wii in the household to own their own Wiimote.

The inclusion of a microphone built-into the controller, along with the speaker announced at E3, will also offer gamers more freedom during online play as they will be able to communicate with fellow gamers without the need for a headset. This makes sense as most images we have of people playing with the infamous device, show them standing up and at some distance from the console. ...

    Walaber Posted this News/release:

This is my first DS game I'm currently working on, called "Rubber Bands". it is based on a simple particle physics library that I wrote, that has support for static lines, particles, stiff rods, and "rubber bands", which are the main feature of the game. the game itself is a collection of mini-games that are based around the physics.

I hope to have the game done soon for release... it currently works on Dualis, and on the hardware of course.

    Beta Version Released
OK, here is the beta version for all of you to test. please don't spread this around yet, as it is not quite ready for official release yet.

I would like to hear any problems you have with the game! for those without hardware, this game should run fine on the latest version of Dualis (run the .nds version)
