IGN have posted the first worldwide review of New Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo DS:

    Heres an excerpt:

Damn, does it feel good to go back to Mario's roots. Don't get me wrong - Super Mario 64 was an important and integral step for Nintendo's plumber hero to take, what with the company essentially being the trailblazer in the world of 3D platforming. But in moving forward, rising expectations pretty much dictated that Nintendo shouldn't look back, so the classic sidescrolling formula was simply relegated to "classic" status, only returning in retro repeats of existing games on current systems and, occasionally, as spin-off franchises for other Nintendo characters. An official Super Mario game would have to be something special for it to exist on a current Nintendo system, which is why the release of New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS is so significant: it absolutely is something special. This game marks a brilliant return to Mario's side-scrolling environments, with a look, feel, and play that feels unbelievably classic, with new elements that do a fantastic job advancing the design.

    The Conclusion

    9.0 Presentation
The only letdown is that the extras are recycled mini-games from Super Mario 64 DS. Outside of that, this game is ridiculously well designed.
    9.0 Graphics
Really slick hybrid 2D/3D engine enables level designers to pull off some awesome effects and gameplay elements, stuff that just weren't possible back in the 2D days.
    9.0 Sound
Classic Mario soundtrack with the enhancement of Mario vocals to begin and cap off each level.
    10 Gameplay
Absolutely brilliant platforming action that takes what Nintendo's built an empire on, and adding so much more to it. It's not a tremendous challenge, but the game is fun as hell from start to end.
    9.0 Lasting Appeal
If you just want to blow through the game from first castle to final battle, it's over in just a few hours. But there's so much more, including hidden levels and single cart multiplayer challenges.
    9.5
    Incredible OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Thraxen has released a new version of the Mame emulator for the Xbox:

    Heres whats new:

    ver 20060505:

This is a fixed version of ver20060412.

    1. Changed some malloc function to osd_malloc so if there's not enough memory, the emu will warn you instead of a crash. This fixed some crash when decrypting neogeo roms and the gfx error of Power Instinct 2 and Power Instinct Legends on 64m xbox.

    2. Rewrote some neogeo gfx rom decrypting code, so it uses only 2K/8M ram instead of 40M/48M/64M to decrypt. Now on 128M xbox it doesnt need vmm to play kog, lans2004, and the svc bootlegs, and less vm is needed for svcpcb and kf2k3pcb. (On 64m xbox less vm is needed too. Some code is converted from iq_132's FBA code, thanks!)

    3. Since some encrypted neogeo games need 8m physical memory to decrypt the gfx rom, if the neogeo game need vmm to play, you have to set the threshold value over 8m, or else you will get a crash. So I added a check in the gfx decrypting code, if virtual memory is used, and the threshold value is below 8m, it will warn you instead of a crash.

Due to these 3 changes/fixes, there shouldnt be any crash playing the neogeo games, even playing the huge encrypted neogeo games on 64m xbox.

    3. If virtual memory is not used (which means, 'force vmm' is set to 'no', AND there is no info in vm.txt for the loaded game), then the xxpagefile.sys file wont be created in the cache drive.

    4. Enable the patch to bypass the hardware test of Ghouls'n Ghosts which is tooooo slow.

    5. Since many ppl never read the readme, and dont know there is an aspect ratio mode option, and then complain why the game is not in full screen, I have to set 'stretch' instead of 'original' as the default setting for aspect ratio mode...

    6. Added new neogeo drivers: ms5pcb (Metal Slug 5 (JAMMA PCB)), ms5pcbd (Metal Slug 5 (JAMMA PCB,decrypted V,decrypted C)), svcpcba (SvC Chaos - SNK vs Capcom (JAMMA PCB, set 2)), mslug3b6 (Metal Slug 6 (Metal Slug 3 bootleg))

    7. Some skin.ini fixes.

    8. MAMEoX.xbe is not packed, so it's a bit large. But this will save some byte of memory. If you want to pack it to save some hd space, just use xbepack to pack it. ...

    Vilmos posted this news:

Finally the new Cyclone core is working well for PalmOS! I can get about 99% of the games working. This is a bugfix version so the big change is stability in the Cyclone interface and the screen resizing is (hopefully) fixed up when using the status bar.
As before this version also has the ability to underclock the CPU and Audio speeds. They are on the launcher beside the CPU label, the first is CPU speed, the second is the Audio CPU speed.

Please let me know how stable this version is compared to the last one. I think it has good potential for a full release.

    Hi,

PSPTris version 0.6 has been released. This is a stand alone Tetris clone for the PSP. The plan is to have it running as a plugin for PSPRadio. But it will also be released as a stand alone version, for those having 2.x firmware, which can't use the dynamic version of PSPRadio.

This version has been updated from the 0.5 version with the following fixes and features.

    Version 0.6 (07th of May 2006)
    --------------------------------
    Fixes:
    - The keyhandling are more responsive (quicker) in the game.
    - The blockhandling has been rewritten, so rotation etc. should work correct now.
    - Better handling when entering highscores (it automatically selects next position after having entered a character).
    - Updated the danzeff OSK so that it doesn't need the transperant images. This saves 1 MB of system memory. (the transperancy still works).
    - Mute the music while the game is paused.
    - Update the bricks so that there are more differences in the colors.

    Features:
    - New gametype has been added (matching colors).
    - Game instructions added to the menu.
    - A line counter has been added to the classic game.
    - Exploding effect added when removing lines/balls.
    - Sounds effects has been added to the game.

    Br, Sandberg.

Well a massively busy week or so is coming with E3 around the corner, please feel free to submit as much news as possible

    Message to Coders

I do have a request for fans of Homebrew worldwide and from different languages, ive noticed on several none english forums that there are new games, demos etc but translation software is pretty much useless so any coders who would like more exposure then please post in our Submit News Forum and we will move it to the site where the news is applicable.

Also to all coders on any platform please use the forums to upload your releases, those free uploaders like Rapidshare and Megaupload etc are rubbish plus you get feedback with your release.

We are the only Network of sites where Coders can post news directly once we make them Coder Rank, we will mirror your release but we are here to be used as promotion for your release

    DCEMU LOGO Needed

The New DCEmu Network site at http://www.dcemu.co.uk will be getting a redesign very soon but for now its in need of a new logo for the site.

The name for the site is

DCEmu - The Home of Homebrew

Size of logo isnt too much of a worry but the actual size in kb does need to be fairly low (under 80kb)

if anyones bored then please have a go

    DCEmu T-Shirt Design

Theres been some discussion for a long while about having a DCEmu T-Shirt and i suppose a T-Shirt with the same logo as the main site would be a great idea. so if any of you are bored again please have a go.

    DCEmu Podcast/Magazine Site

Theres been discussion in IRC about a Podcast site for DCEmu, who is up for it ?, if theres a demand then we will sort out a sub domain for you and get the idea going. Let Me know.

Got an Idea for a Site or Need Hosting

With the Vbulletin Forum we use we have near on 50,000 members at this time and the forum can be used as a news feed for any site, the site doesnt have to be Homebrew related as long as its not illegal :P, i personally would like to see say a Harry Potter dcemu site or sites on consoles/pc/laptops etc etc.

    Interesting ideas are always welcome.

Ok thats all for my rant, back to less boring stuff now ...

    News from PS2Dev:

An update to the pre-built win32 binary of PSP Packer. This tool allows you to pack (i.e. compress) a PSP executable for use on v1.0 and v1.5 only. This saves filesize of course but it does more. For one it is a simple way of getting your PRX based application to run from the Sony menu (you cannot put a PRX inside an EBOOT) and it now patches the kernel so even user mode modules can use the LoadModule function to load things like atrac3plus or network libraries from flash direct with no extra cludges in your application. For other platforms get the source from subversion and compile it up as normal. ...
