You've undoubtedly been told countless times by cheerleading elders that anything's possible if you put your mind to it. Turns out, those sagacious folks were spot on, although we're pretty sure this pioneering research isn't what they'd intended. A trio of biomedical engineers at the University of Minnesota have taken the realm of brain-computer interfaces a huge leap forward with a non-invasive control system -- so, no messy drills boring into skulls here. The group's innovative BCI meshes man's mental might with silicon whizzery to read and interpret sensorimotor rhythms (brain waves associated with motor control) via an electroencephalography measuring cap. By mapping these SMRs to a virtual helicopter's forward-backward and left to right movements, subjects were able to achieve "fast, accurate and continuous" three-dimensional control of the CG aircraft. The so scifi-it-borders-on-psychic tech could one day help amputees control synthetic limbs, or less nobly, helps us mentally manipulate 3D avatars. So, the future of gaming and locomotion looks to be secure, but we all know where this should really be headed -- defense tactics for the Robot Apocalypse.

GoldenEye Reloaded is out next Friday, November 4 and in case you missed it we're running a great competition the night before to decide the ultimate GoldenEye player with a fantastic prize of a PS3, big screen Sony TV and assorted gaming goodies worth hundreds of pounds up for grabs.

But we also caught up with Activision producer for GoldenEye Reloaded, James Steer, at a recent multiplayer event, to talk Bond, guns and gadgets. We started off by quizzing him on the huge multiplayer legacy of the series.

"We talk about the original N64 game as being like the godfather of first-person shooters," said Steer, "You know especially from a multiplayer, split-screen point of view. People loved it."

Naturally, we wondered if this created any additional pressure when it came to creating the multiplayer side of GoldenEye 007 Reloaded, given its illustrious heritage.

"There's a pressure, but it's also quite an honour to work on it," said Steer. "We create our own pressure in that way, because we want to do the best thing we can, the best Bond game that we can make, let alone the best GoldenEye game."

"So yes there is a pressure, but it's a good thing I think. Everyone wants to make games that people love and recognise and GoldenEye is hugely popular, so that's great."

You can check out our impressions of the game in our recent multiplayer hands-on preview.

And don't forget, if you're available to play at HMV Gamerbase in Manchester on Nov 3, why not come along and try winning that GoldenEye prize yourself?

Not only will you have a chance to win all those gaming goodies, plus some splendid runners-up prizes, but there'll be food, drink, Bond girls and our video team will be on hand to immortalise your efforts for posterity.

Nintendo's Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony concert came to London last night, giving fans of the series a rare opportunity to witness some of gaming's most recognisable anthems performed by their creators.

Doors opened at 6.30pm and quickly the halls of the Hammersmith Apollo filled with costume-clad Zelda fans, including one keen pair dressed as Ocarina witches Koume and Kotake. We're glad we weren't sat behind them.

An excitable atmosphere built up until eventually the Royal Philarmonic Concert Orchestra took to the stage, on the backdrop of a giant screen showing off visuals from the games.

Mozilla is now distributing a version of Firefox that uses Bing as the default search provider instead of Google. Rest assured that this is a joint project, though: the creatively-named Firefox with Bing website is run by Microsoft, and both Mozilla and MS are clear that this is a joint venture. Now, don't get too excited — the default version of Firefox available from Mozilla.com is still backed by Google, and there's no mention of an alternative, Bingy download anywhere on the site — but it's worth noting that Mozilla has been testing Bing's capabilities using Test Pilot over the last couple of months, and the release of Firefox with Bing indicates that Mozilla is now confident in Bing's ability to provide a top-notch service to Firefox users. Mozilla might be readying a large-scale switch to Bing when its current contract with Google expires in November.

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock were both unavailable for comment, but we're guessing the pair would be quite pleased to see that the tech world's Need For Speed is hardly fading. Maingear and Origin PC have both announced this week that their high-end gaming desktops are now available with Intel's Core i7 2700K -- a beast of a processor that's clocked from the factory at 3.5GHz. Maingear's shoving this guy into its SHIFT (starting at $1,985) and F131 (starting at $1,228) rigs, with factory overclocking options pushing it beyond 5GHz. Origin is hawking its Genesis desktop with a factory speed of 5.2GHz, and yes, gratis warranties are thrown in for the paranoid. Hit the links below to give your wallet the dent it's been asking for.

We say proprietary and you think, Sony. Isn't that how it usually goes? For the electronic giant's latestreVitalized foray into portable gaming, the same old custom solution is in tow -- now, with limited storage options. According to a report on Kotaku Japan, games made for the handheld will either save your progress to its SD card-like external storage or to the cartridge itself, as SCEI's not offering users any option for overlap or preference. Thinking you might save a few bucks and skip out on the external memory altogether? Well, my frugal gaming friends, think again. Unlike the PSP, titles for the system requiring an external save, in addition to some downloadable content, simply won't play without a memory card on board. Sure, this tidbit of news could prove frustrating to those not indoctrinated to the company's obstinate ways. But, we're willing to bet this device's dazzling innards are enough to help you overlook these minor niggles come next February.

It looks as if the secondary joypad accessory being released for the 3DS final has a name.
Siliconera reports that Nintendo has trademarked the name ‘Circle Pad Pro’ in Japan, It has also trademarked ‘Slide Pad Expansion’ in Japanese, suggesting the former moniker is destined for the rest.
Pictures of the peripheral first appeared in August. MCV admits to having a little chuckle at its expense, and no one was as surprised as us when Nintendo officially confirmed the unit in September.
It will be compatible with a number of titles including Monster Hunter 3G and Resident Evil: Revelations.

Peripherals specialist Venom will distribute a range of officially licensed 3DS peripherals.
The firm has the exclusive UK and Ireland distribution rights for Project Sustain’s 3DS range. There are nine products currently on offer, including mushroom ear buds, folio cases and in-car chargers.
These are available now and are already stocked by retailers such as Tesco.
“The Project Sustain range is a fantastic addition to what Venom currently offers,” head of business development Tom Hodge told MCV. “As a brand we are constantly striving to offer a one-stop shop for our retail partners. The 3DS is going to have a great Christmas and the licensed range will help retail make the margin they need.
“With the recent price drop on 3DS we expect to see some real traction on this product leading up to and beyond Christmas.”
The range is one of several officially licensed lines in Venom’s portfolio.

Sainsbury’s new £1m acquisition will let it develop a digital games service for 2012, it has told MCV.
The supermarket giant purchased Global Media Vault (GMV) from Music Box Leisure last week. The online entertainment specialist has a unique entertainment ecommerce and digital media platform, with a digital database of over 3m music, film and game assets for the UK market, which can be searched through, bought and distributed via the web, mobile platforms, TV and even kiosks.
The platform will allow customers to buy, stream or rent from the firm’s Entertainment website, which it launched last year. The company said the acquisition is a real time saver as it means it doesn’t need to build a platform from scratch.
“This acquisition will enable us to develop our Sainsbury’s Entertainment online and games proposition significantly and quickly,” said Sainsbury’s head of entertainment Richard Crampton.
“The digital vault will allow us to develop a media and digital games service delivered to our customers through a variety of channels in 2012.”
