Speaking at a business writers' convention in the United States, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has confirmed that the next-generation Xbox console will launch this year, and once again promoted the new system's multimedia capabilities.

Breaking with the company's policy of staying silent in public on the question of when the new console, widely believed to be called Xbox 360, will launch, Gates told the Society of American Business Writers and Editors that the system will ship in the current year.

Speaking about high definition displays, he asked rhetorically when the "year of high definition" will be - and followed on to say that it would be "this year, because we're going to ship this next Xbox."

His comment is the first public acknowledgement by the company that it plans to ship Xbox 360 before the end of the year, although it's been generally accepted around the industry for some time that the console will arrive in October or November.

Gates also talked briefly about the multimedia functionality which will be offered by Xbox 360, comparing it to the firm's Media Center PC software. "If you're used that menu, when you use this Xenon [the codename for Xbox 360], you'll see a menu a lot like that, that lets you get photos, TV, music and all those different things," he explained.

It's still not clear, however, whether Xbox 360 will offer this functionality in all of its retail versions. Several reports have indicated that the system will ship with two configurations, one of which, lacking a hard drive, will be less capable as a multimedia device.

Many questions about the new console are expected to be answered next week, when MTV broadcasts a television special about the Xbox 360 - airing on the evening of May 12th in North America, and on May 13th worldwide. ...

Xbox 360 is about to replace Sony's PlayStation as the world's favourite games platform, according to Bill Gates.
The man who built Microsoft into the giant it is today went on record last week with his plans to overtake Sony in the games console race.

"Our goal in the last generation was to be in the game," said Gates in a presentation to the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, "and we came out of this round a strong number two. Now people are looking at Microsoft and Sony at a pretty much equal basis."

Microsoft only entered the console market in 2001 with the Xbox. The Xbox 360 is expected to beat both Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Revolution (which, interestingly, was not even mentioned by Gates as a legitimate competitor) to the living room. It will be unveiled during a MTV special on May 12/13 and should be on sale later this year.

Gates also discussed Xbox 360's multimedia capabilities and offered a glimpse into the console's start menu. "When you use Xenon you'll see a menu that lets you get photos, TV, music and all those different things," he said.
He also mentioned that your Xbox Live account would be automatically linked to your system startup, letting you instantly see if any of your friends are online and chat with them straight away.

Finally, more interesting info straight from the Gates: in an interview with tech weblog Engadget he reiterated Microsoft's intentions to avoid the portable gaming market, but suggested that a Nokia N-Gage-style gaming phone could be on the cards.

"I think you'll see us do flavours of the phone that are better for gaming and have an affinity to PC gaming and Xenon gaming," he said. "We see a generation of phones coming that really can do this without too much compromising being available in the two to four year time frame."

And in case you were wondering, he does have a PSP - compliments of PlayStation godfather Ken Kutaragi. "He sent me one, so that was nice," said Gates. "I'm not sure if he'd have done the same with PS3, though."

Steve has released a new version of his Nes emulator for the UIQ phones, heres whats new:

Added turbo game A/B keys mode which is enabled via the options dialog
Added a combo button key press feature that when press activates both game buttons, A & B
Added a purple virtual button and default mapped it to the combo key press, but can be mapped as desired
Added a display mode options setting to select between "fit-to-screen" or "center" modes

Hope this is in the right place, sorry if it isn't.

I'm just wondering what sort of work is involved in editing an already existing cheat device? For example, one of the old Xploder V1 or something.

I mean editing and customising the interface that gets displayed on the ps2, changing the encryption of the codes (Hex on Xploder), etc.

As you can tell I'm new here, I'm interested in this though but I don't wanna get annoying and start stepping on peoples toes. This would never be for public distribution or anything that I think would antagonize Blaze, it's just for home use.
