PCSX2 SVN r4791 is released. PCSX2 is an open source PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulator for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. With the most recent versions, many PS2 games are playable (although speed limitations have made play-to-completion tests for many games impractical), and several games are claimed to have full functionality.

    PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
    r4791
GSdx: CRC hackfix for Midnight Club 3, fixes the huge vram usage when moving.
Small change to the Burnout hackfix, was skipping too much for NTSC.

The coder Neur0n releases a new update for PSPStates, a plugin through which you can save our game sessions regardless of save points established by the game itself. The work begun by Dark_Alex is adapted from Neur0n for the latest HEN / CF.

The new release confirms the compatibility with previous models, plus updated support for PSP Go (05G) for HEN / SS 6:39, in particular the recent TN 6:39 6:39 PRO CF-A and given that the coder has recently entered Neur0n part of the development team for this CF.
PSPStates remember that it is incompatible with PSP FAT (series 1000) as for its correct operation uses the extra RAM introduced from PSP SLIM (Series 200).

Oversleeping sucks, but we’ve all been there. Whether its a matter of hitting the snooze button a dozen times too many, or turning off the alarm and drifting back to sleep – sooner or later, you are going to wake up late.

Instructables user [nolte919] has overslept a time or two in his life, and he set out to design a clock that would make it nearly impossible to wake up late. His clock is Arduino-based and shares many features with off the shelf models including multiple alarms, a backup battery, and snooze features. His alarm however goes one step further and ensures you are fully awake each morning.

If you hit the user-defined snooze limit, the alarm sounds and will not turn off until you have cleared 4 lines in Tetris. That’s right, you have to prove to the clock that you are awake and coherent before it will shut off. Technically you can silence the alarm for a 30 second period so you can focus on Tetris, but that’s all the break you get.

It really is a novel way of ensuring you are awake in the morning, and heck, how bad can the day be when you start off by playing video games for a few minutes?

Stick around to see a quick video of his Tetris alarm clock in action.

    News via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/07/04/g...lo-net-winner/

As I said a few days ago, the Genesis competition is far from being over, as we still have a bit more than 1500$ to give to winners. Today I’m announcing two prizes of 100$, one for the /Talk audience vote, and the other for my personal favorite open source entry.

    /Talk audience vote
Lamecraft and pro cfw were by very far the audience favorite entries, respectively with 22% and 30% of the votes, but as I announced when we started the vote, these 2 already won the big prizes, and consequently were not eligible for the audience prize.
Victory therefore goes to Nazi Zombies Portable, which wins with a comfortable margin against the other competitors. Thumbs up also go to 6.39 Downgrader by some1 (which wasn’t eligible for that prize), Easy 6.20 Dualboot by Rinnegatamante, Aloader by ardi, Localizer by Draan, G.D.P. by DeViaNTe, PSP3DPlugin by PSPWizard, Silveredge by AndrewYY, and gSquare by Geecko, who all got a fair amount of votes, while not being able to drag as much attention as NZP.

Nazi Zombies portable is an fps in which you have to survive as long as you can against hordes of zombies. The concept is fairly popular, and the PSP was still missing its own version of this game. NZP fills this void! Quoting the authors:

Nz portable is about surviving unlimited rounds of zombies in an enclosed area. While playing, you get points from different actions. These points can be used to buy weapons, open doors for more playable areas, and utilize different things. Zombies enter the level from outside of the playable area, and you can slow them a little bit by boarding their entrances with planks of wood. Nazi zombie portable is inspired by the same game that is found in Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: World at War (these games are not made by us, they are made by the company treyarch). Every single content ingame is 100% made by us or by people who have submited their work for us to use.

Nzp is using a heavily modified quake engine called proquake. This engine is made by baker. and we have editted it to suit our needs. The game logic (qc ) is written 100% by us from scrach.

NZP Can be downloaded from the official thread here. Have fun

    Wololo’s prize
This is my own prize, that goes to my favorite open source entry. There were honestly lots of homebrews to which I would have wanted to award this prize, but in the end I decided to award it to Draan’s Localizer. There’s a very nice concept behind this app, and it is truly a perfect example of a great legit usage for a hacked PSP. Yes, if you speak one of the 250 languages Sony “forgot” for commercial reasons to include in their console, this plugin can help you. It is basically a plugin that helps you translating all the PSP internal messages, including but not limited to the XMB. Oh, and it does all that on the fly in Ram, so no need to flash anything, no fear to brick your PSP or anything like that

    Simply brilliant!

You can Download Localizer from the official thread here.

Both NZP and Localizer authors will receive 100$ for their cool work. Npt and myself will be in touch with you guys to send you the prizes. Congrats! ...

Researchers from Cornell have used AI to create a system based on the Kinect that can recognize what you are doing — cleaning your teeth, cooking, writing on a whiteboard etc. In a smart home it could be used to offer help: 'Would you like some help with that recipe, Dave?' Or it could monitor patients or workers to make sure they are doing what they are told. The study also reveals that there is probably enough information in how activities are performed to recognize an individual — so providing yet more biometrics. There are clearly a lot more things that we can teach the Kinect to do with machine learning than just gesture recognition.

TransGaming CEO Vikas Gupta has cast doubt on the future of video game streaming service OnLive.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz from the company's Toronto offices, Gupta outlined the technical and economical problems with OnLive, and the way TransGaming's rival service, Game Tree TV, will be different.

"We've looked at OnLive's [business] model and we don't believe it's sustainable," he said. "We don't believe they can make money on it."

"We know what they're making from a distribution fee perspective, because that's their model... So EA says here's a game, and that game retails for $50. We know that they're only making x percent, and within that margin there's no way they can make money, given their operating expenditure, as well as the initial capital expenditure in order to get that data centre up and running."

Gupta describes the end-user experience in North America as "pretty good", but doubts that the AAA console audience OnLive is targeting will tolerate any noticable performance issues.

"The problem, I feel, is that if I'm playing Call Of Duty and I know that on my PlayStation 3 it's an amazing, uninterrupted experience, the minute I get jitters with OnLive, or any kind of stuttering, that's it, I'm going to stop. These aren't the sort of games where you can have that level of delay or unpredictable performance."

Game Tree TV, however, has been built "from the ground up" for smart TVs, with consistency of service and experience as the highest priority.

We've looked at OnLive's model and we don't believe it's sustainable. We don't believe they can make money on it
    Vikas Gupta, CEO, TransGaming
"Think of us as the Netflix of videogames-on-demand," he says. "We've got a sophisticated infrastructure located in the cloud... but the one big difference is that we download the content directly to the device, and that allows us to run the content optimally, and not have to worry about bandwidth issues and so on, which, in certain territories, can be a big problem."

In Gupta's view, OnLive and other streaming services offering AAA console games haven't yet found a compelling solution, and Game Tree TV will be focused on a more inclusive, family-friendly experience comprising smaller games that can be downloaded quickly and played with a remote control - Plants Vs. Zombies, Peggle, World Of Goo, Osmos, Puzzle Quest.

"We're taking a very pragmatic approach. My operating expenditure is fixed. I know exactly what it is. We don't have to worry about scalability issues. We have scale in the cloud, but fundamentally, whether I've got one million users or 100,000 users or 100 users, it doesn't matter. We're dealing with a model where it's short bursts of bandwidth requirement."

Rather than produce its own set-top box, TransGaming is forming partnerships with cable operators and set-top box manufacturers to include Game Tree TV as a part of their services.

"We've publicly announced our first operator, Free, the second largest in France. Free will have 5 million subscribers on the Freebox by the end of next year, so that's a 5 million addressable market with a single operator. And we're expecting, by next year, in excess of half a dozen operators."

Game Tree TV is designed to fit seamlessly into the viewing experience by using broadcast television as its main point of inspiration. Indeed, almost the entire staff of Transgaming's Atlanta office was "scooped up" from Turner Broadcasting, including Blake Lewin, the creator of GameTap.

In the near future, Gupta intends to mimic broadcast television by dividing the service into channels. There will be channels devoted to specific companies like PopCap and Disney, or specific genres like puzzle and adventure, all of which will have tailored subscription packages.

"We have the ability to allow the consumer to go from watching TV to – without the switching of hardware or remote controls or anything else – playing games, and then back to watching TV."

"We [also] have the ability to use metadata tags, so if the user is watching a particular show and there's a corresponding game available on Game Tree TV, then at the end of the show, with the help of the operator, we can put up a little message that says play this game now, and with a single click we can transition that consumer directly to that product page."

Whether the AAA experience at the heart of OnLive plays a role in GameTree TV's future is still being decided, but right now Gupta believes it won't play a role in the near term, for both the company and gaming on smart TVs.

"We'll get higher end. Don't get me wrong there. But we don't want to look like we're competing with consoles, because we really believe that the console experience is a very different kind of experience... We're not taking a digital distribution property and now trying to bolt it on to the latest buzzword. We've thought about the televeision experience, we've thought about what the consumer wants
