A new release of the Dos Emulator for the Nintendo DS

    DS2x86 0.08 release notes
This version has a lot of previously missing opcodes implemented, so a few more games might run again. I did not have time to add support for new INT calls or I/O ports into this version, so those errors will still happen in the games that previously had these errors. I hope to be able to handle these in the upcoming versions.

I have also debugged some ill-behaving games, but sadly that has been mostly frustrating work with no clear improvements in the behaviour. I have collected a lot of information and have been able to close in on the actual problems, but have not yet been able to solve them yet.

After spending many days with various problems in the games, and getting frustrated, I decided to see if I could get Windows 3.00a to run in Standard Mode also in DS2x86. This basically meant porting the 16-bit protected mode features I had coded into the original DSx86 to DS2x86. This work progressed better, so that this version can run Windows 3.00a in both Real and Standard mode. The Enhanced mode would need support for virtual memory, which is not coded in yet, so that mode does not work.

The problem in Windows 3.00a that I have been fighting with today was that opening some programs, like Paintbrush, gave an error "File PBRUSH.DLL not found" or similar. I checked the Windows directory and the file does exist, and I even checked my SD card for errors, but still I got that error. Next I checked my emulated DOS System File Table contents, which has room for 64 entries, but there were only 16 entries used so that was not the cause. I debugged my DOS file routines, and made sure the directory and file name are exactly correct, and then found out that it was the DS2 SDK fopen() function that returned NULL for the file. Finally it then occurred to me to check the the SDK file system functions (which luckily come with source) to see what the file table size is there, and it had only 16 entries! So, I doubled the size to 32 entries, and now Windows 3.00a seems to run. I think I could increase the table to 64, to match my emulated DOS file table, but I'll do that later when I have more time to test that everything still works.

    DSx86 0.32 release notes
This DSx86 version has only one minor fix, as I have been focusing on DS2x86 during this two-week period. I implemented the direct file reading into EGA VRAM, which is used by games like Rockford and Heimdall.

    News via http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/dow...r-zune-hd.html

zuNESter is a port of PocketNester 0.7a. It is highly optimized and should be able to run any NES ROM at a full 60 frames per second. It supports 9 save states per ROM. Unfortunately, the sound currently does not work at all. Hopefully that will change in the future. The controls are obvious from the overlay, except that to access the menu while playing a game in portrait mode, you have to touch where the game is displaying (upper part of the screen).

Also, be sure to add your own NES ROMs to the ROMs folder before deploying.

Note: Nothing has yet changed since the latest release candidate. The source code will be added soon.

    Update:
-Landscape mode (Thanks to Nick for the theme.)
-ROMs are now searched for in /flash2/zuNESter/ROMs as well. (Put them there with Liberate or the zuNESter File Deployer.)
-Moved saves to /flash2/zuNESter/Saves and now saves according to the entire file name.
-Invisible quick load button in top-left corner and invisible quick save button in top-right corner. ...

    News via http://www.dingux.com/2011/05/new-gemei-x760.html

In the comments of the previous post Neno provided the following link:

    http://www.it.com.cn/audio/mp4/news/.../757299_1.html

So I asked ChinaChip. That is the upcoming Gemei X760+ (yes, same name than the old x760+, fun!), and the specs in the linked page are wrong. It's due out by the end of May according to ChinaChip.

It's CC1800 based, same SoC than in the Gemei A330. LCD is 4.3" 480x272. I like the wealth of controls in the lower side.

Unfortunately work on the CC1800 has been slow. It's no fun to write code based on other code with no comments and no programmer's manual, plus I recently got sponsoring for porting dingux to a JZ4755 based device (can't say much about that at the moment), which will be eating up absolutely all of my spare time for the next couple of months. As I already said, I'm not happy being the bottleneck here, so I asked ChinaChip to let me disclose the information they provided on the CC1800 but got no reply, so for now I must honor my promise of keeping the information closed. ...

    News via http://dknute.livejournal.com/38217.html

So... SONY manages to have their PSN data stolen. And not just any data - the most sensitive kind, their customers' personal data. SONY calls that a high-profile malicious attack but in reality their system had gaping security holes. Known vulnerabilities were not patched for months. Very proffesional, let me guess, it was all outsourced to cut the costs?

How bad is it? So bad that they don't even know WHAT was taken since the logs were compromised as well. Because SONY not only failed to run a proper server stack, they failed to setup a logging system that would run independently. Apparently if it wasn't for the attackers clumsy attempts to cover their tracks, nobody would even know the intrusion took place!

To add insult to injury I was away from country as it got reported and could not block my card or else I'd end up with no money to pay bills and return home...

Words fail to properly convey my feelings about this, I'll try though. Let's start with PSP - it got hacked, with a spoofed "service battery" of all things. Way to include a backdoor into your secure product, guys. Just brilliant. PS3 - got hacked with a stupid buffer overflow in USB layer, again with the help of a backdoor system known as "service JIG". Then it got owned completly because SONY decided to use curve-based crypto rather than the usual RSA-like system, and nobody understood the new algorithms well enough to actually use them properly. I was laughing so hard when this was published... And what does SONY do? Blame the hackers.

Next thing SONY fails at is running a secure database with all of their clients data. And not just PSN, apparently the SOE one was raided too. You couldn't do worse if you tried. Hell, SONY might have as well just copied and send out the data themselves - at least that way we wouldn't have to endure a lenghty downtime of their services. But wait, that's not all of it yet. Now they got their collective asses moving and decided to actually upgrade the Apache to the latest version - and maybe (though doubtful) to keep doing that from now on. And with the claim that it's secure now they made it into grand reopening. Some lesser CEO even apologized. Wow. It would be much more impressive if not for another exploit that was discovered, what, less then 24 hours after the restart? This seems to be the extent of their new security - they just can't code shit, even if their lives depended on it.

Also, as it turns out, Japanese government is not happy with the way SONY handled the situation and forbid PSN reopening until all the issues are properly resolved, and explanations are made as to what steps were undertaken to prevent this mess from happening again in future. Now, this might just be a political struggle but it does kinda make you wonder just how secure this "new" system really is. It sure bothers me.

We are talking about 100 million accounts, this is THE BIGGEST data leak in history. Ever. SONY fails time and time again, and there seem to be no consequences whatsoever. I'm really unhappy with EU and USA authorities not demanding formal apology and proper compensation. I suppose the unnamed hackers will again take all the blame, since apparently big companies can do no evil. Nobody died, right? Move along folks, nothing to see here.

Oh and don't get me started on the Welcome Back Programme - it's just as insulting as the half-hearted apology. Rather than get a wallet bonus or something to the effect, we are given old games that many already have. And this is no accident, SONY knows well what games we have and play (via PSN reports) so this way they just pretend to give us something without actually investing too much money. Think of it this way, you just exchanged all of your personal data, including possibly credit card info, for 2 lousy games and 30 days of PSN+. Was it worth it?

I'm pretty sure kids won't mind. When you're 16 or so, what do you care who knows what your name and date of birth is. But proper adults should realize the potential consequences of identity theft. I've seen it happen to someone who had ID card stolen and let me tell you - it ain't pretty. First of all it won't hit you right away, usually takes months, but then it will haunt you for many months to come. And there is nothing you can do about it, except work hard to clear your name. In the meantime it's quite possible you'll be visited by debt collectors asking for money you never had, and even receive threats from people who think you owe them. Banks might lock your accounts every now and then, your cards will stop working due to all the stuff happening, and so on. And the worst thing is you know none of this is your fault. Welcome to your personal hell.

I won't ask anybody to boycott SONY. You do what you think is right in that situation. I will probably keep using my PS3 since the milk is spilt and nothing will change that. I sure won't enter my card detais into the console again, ...

[JJ Hendricks] wrote in to tell us about his SNES cartridge urinal. The fully functional urinal is constructed with 40 SNES cartridges and sealed up with polyurethane. The base of the whole operation is actually not a puddle of festering urine, but instead poured polyurethane that ensures proper flow through the drain. You heard right, this urinal actually flushes! As a bit of consolation [Hendricks] plainly states in the directions: “No good games were damaged in the making of this video. All the video games used in this urinal were already broken or worthless sports games”. We have featured some SNES cartridge readers before, so now you have something to do with all the leftover hardware! Gross

Development has been progessing quite nicely on [Matlo's] PlayStation 3 controller spoofing project. This is a package that allows you to identify a PC as a PS3 controller. We know what you’re thinking: why would you want to do that? When we originally looked in on the project about a year ago we mentioned that this allows you to use any Linux-friendly peripheral as a PS3 controller. In the clip embedded below you’ll see that nothing beats a good keyboard and gaming mouse when it comes to first-person shooters. [Matlo's] solution not only allows you to use alternative control hardware, but there’s almost unlimited configurability.

And speaking of configuration, he’s done a ton of work on the GUI. After the initial package installation no terminal typing needs to be done to get the system configured. Once in place, you can set the MAC address of a Bluetooth dongle to spoof the address of your SixAxis controller. From there you can set up the button mapping, calibrate mouse hardware and the like, and even program macros (fantastic). Now go out and pwn everyone at deathmatch now that the PlayStation Network is back up and running.

If you think that your water cooled rig is pretty sweet, check out this creation by Dutch PC enthusiast [Peter Brands] (Google Translation).

With his computer tweaked as far as he could imagine, he decided to spruce up his office a bit. In the process, he ended up tweaking his computer just a little bit more. After seeing a build put together by another computer enthusiast, he set off to construct a desk in which he could show off his computer. He spent some time drawing up plans with Google Sketchup and with the help of a friendly neighbor, started construction of his desk/PC case.

The desk is constructed from 3mm thick aluminum, and houses most of his computer’s components under a thick piece of glass. The only portion of the computer that is not enclosed in the desk is the 9-fan radiator he used for his water cooling setup. That part resides in his crawl space, which he connects to his PC via a pair of large water hoses he punched through his tile floor. If you are interested, you can see all 800+ pictures of the build here.

    Simply awesome!
