The Nintendo 3DS has a slider in its side. A slider that adjusts its namesake feature, three-dimensional imagery, up and down in intensity relative to the user's preference. Now, although the 3DS' screen doesn't force glasses on you, it does demand that it be held just right in order to get the most out of the 3D effect and we can imagine plenty of people might neglect its extra dimension in favor of old-fashioned 2D (not to mention those who can't tolerate the third D for health reasons). It's encouraging, therefore, to hear that Nintendo has taken the stance that no game should require 3D as part of its gameplay mechanics. That's the word from Hideki Konno, one of Nintendo's veteran producers, who says the company wants all of its 3DS games to be playable in 2D, essentially reducing the 3D aspect to an aesthetic enhancement. Some might argue that's underusing the portable's hardware potential, but Nintendo has always been in the business of pleasing the mass market -- there's nothing preventing some daring developer from making a game entirely dependent on a three-dimensional perspective.

What are the chances of walking into a shop tomorrow and buying a Nintendo 3DS off the shelf?
Is there enough stock allocated to the UK to serve the pre-orders and then the spontaneous shoppers out there?
    Eurogamer investigated.
Sainsbury's: "We have 3DS consoles in over 300 stores from launch this Friday. Availability is good and we will have a fantastic range of offers across hardware, software and accessories," Sainsbury's promised Eurogamer.
Buy a 3DS from Sainsbury's Harringay, London Colney or Lincoln at midnight tonight and pay £197. Standard price after will be £219.99.
Super Monkey Ball 3D and Rayman 3D are only £30 when bought with a 3DS.
ASDA: "I have looked into your inquiry and am assured we will have enough stock for anyone who wants to come to store to buy a Nintendo 3DS this Friday and weekend," ASDA told Eurogamer, patting its pocket.
ASDA stores will sell the 3DS for £197. Online you can pre-order at a special price of £187.
ASDA will also be opening 200 stores at midnight tonight to sell the 3DS. The Derby supermarket offers the first 100 3DS buyers a free game, entertainment and food.
If you buy a 3DS from ASDA within the first three days you can pick up one of the 3DS launch titles for £15. This deal is also effective online.
"We're expecting huge week-one demand, particularly for the weekend..."

    HMV

Tesco: A spokesperson for Tesco told Eurogamer there will be enough stock for off-the-shelf buying tomorrow. Tesco sells the 3DS for £175 if you buy a 3DS game with it, which takes the grand total to £209.99. The flat Tesco 3DS price is £197.
Morrisons: Eurogamer was told by Morrisons that pre-order demand had been so high that shelf stock had been affected. We're waiting for an official statement.
Currys: "We are selling the Nintendo 3DS in all our stores and are confident that there will be stock available to purchase throughout the day," Currys told Eurogamer.
Currys carries a low 3DS price of £179. But there's a caveat: that price is only offered to the first 150 people queueing at Currys on Oxford Street tonight. The flat price for a 3DS at Currys is £197, with a £25 game-price incentive bolted on.
Toys 'R' Us: "For thousands of 3DS fans across the country who cannot make it at midnight, we can confirm that Toys 'R' Us will not be disappointing customers on Friday morning. Each of our 76 stores in the UK will be supplied with plenty of stock to cope with consumer demand," Toys 'R' Us told Eurogamer.
HMV: "In a nutshell: yes," HMV answered to Eurogamer. "But we're expecting huge week-one demand, particularly for the weekend - so the earlier punters come in to make their purchase the better. Better still, if they pre-order by Thursday we will guarantee them a 3DS - so we recommend that's their best bet."
HMV is the official launch 3DS UK launch partner, so more stock may be pushed its way. The HMV midnight launch bonanza we've written about before. Oxford Street HMV is the flagship venue down south; Liverpool One shopping centre HMV up north.
HMV sells the 3DS for a flat price of £197.
GAME: "Yes, as a punter there will be stock available at each store (both GAME and gamestation) for you to walk in and buy a 3DS," GAME told Eurogamer.
GAME sells the 3DS for £197. GAME's midnight launch plans we've written about before.
If you know of any other shops with 3DS stock availability, please tell us below.

Today's most infamous hacker, PS3 jailbreaker George "Geohot" Hotz, has laughed in the face of allegations that he fled Sony's lawyers and ran away to South America.
"Apparently, I have fled the country. ROFL," wrote Hotz in a post titled "Fearmongering" on his Geohot Got Sued blog.
"Factually, it's true I'm in South America, on a vacation I've had planned and paid for since November. I mean, it is spring break; hacking isn't my life.
"Rest assured that not a dime of legal defence money would ever go toward something like this. And of course [Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton - Sony's choice of legal firm on this matter] loves the idea of painting me as an international fugitive.
"I have been in contact with my lawyers almost every day," Hotz added. "I would not let the case suffer.
"That said, I also won't let this ridiculous lawsuit run my life either. Then the fearmongerers win."
Hotz will return to North America because the Xperia Play, Sony's new PlayStation-themed phone, is "hard to come by" where he is. I think it's supposed to be a joke.
Yesterday, Sony's lawyers accused Hotz of refusing to comply with court orders. "Hotz's attempts to dodge this Court's authority raise very serious questions," the legal team declared.
Hotz faces an uphill battle against Sony in court. Judges have already ordered that Hotz turn over his computer for inspection. The authorities have also granted subpoenas spanning YouTube, Google, Twitter and Hotz's own website and PayPal account~. Why? To find out who else was involved with PS3 Jailbreak, and who downloaded the piracy-enabling hack.
The only question left to answer is who will play Hotz in Geohot: The Movie - Leonardo DiCaprio or Harrison Ford?

Supermarket Tesco and high-street electronics shop Currys have both lowered the Nintendo 3DS price to under £180.
Tesco is lowest, asking just £175 for the new device, according to MCV. Currys is after £179, wrote TechRadar.
To qualify for that Tesco price, you'll need to buy an accompanying 3DS game in-store.
Curry's will only sell the 3DS for £179 to the first 150 people in line at Currys on Oxford Street, London.
Those 150 people will also get a £75 voucher book, a £5 discount on selected 3DS games, £15 off Wii Fit and £20 off a Wii console.
Supermarket Morrisons and Amazon had offered the joint-lowest 3DS price of £187.
The Nintendo 3DS carries a RRP of £230. But why does it cost so much? Eurogamer's US news correspondent Fred Dutton investigated exactly how much it costs to make a Nintendo 3DS.
The Nintendo 3DS arrives in the UK tonight, at midnight.

Opportunities for success in the console download space are continuing to shrink, with access to distribution and prices being "squeezed" on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, according to veteran designer Don Daglow.
While success in the blockbuster market is closed off to anyone without a million dollar marketing budget and equal development funds, there may still be some digital opportunities for small teams on console, but Daglow warned of a rapidly changing and unpredictable landscape.
"The downloadable console space – that area is in flux. Whatever you think of the way the world works today, don't wait to tell people six months from now because the market is going to be different," Daglow told GamesIndustry.biz in an interview published today.
We're certainly seeing some squeeze in access to distribution and some erosion of price in places.
    Don Daglow, Daglow Entertainment

"We're certainly seeing some squeeze in access to distribution compared to what we had before. We're also seeing some erosion of price in places. But it is a place where a good game, that maybe even a single programmer did, can still break through.
"So I don't think we've choked off the innovation in that area, but I do think that – like everything else – it's getting tougher," he said.
Daglow has set up his own studio to concentrate on the social gaming space, currently with 10 people working on a project already signed to a publishing partner in a deal reminiscent of the old developer/publisher relationship.
He believes that the knock on effect that the Wii had on the traditional console games market threw many off balance, leaving a lot of companies struggling to react to changes in the current generation of home hardware.
"Because this console cycle did not evolve the way everybody expected, the infrastructure was built for this generation based on the PS2 and Xbox generation, and the Wii disrupted that – the economics never supported it so everybody stuck it out in the hole, in effect, and that has chain-reacted really negatively through the industry in terms of the number of projects, risk taking, the number of jobs lost: all those factors," he said.
Daglow is excited to be entering the console space, not to jump on a bandwagon - he heaps praise on companies that have already discovered and built a business around millions of users that never considered themselves gamers before - but he also sees opportunity for games that are designed to entertain first and foremost, to stand out in a market that struggles to convince some of its legitimacy.
"I actually think of the Facebook market as being like that experience at E3 – and at CES before E3 – in that in each of those situations I came back and thought that the only way to get through this mess, with all that stuff that's out there, is to build something that's fun to play. Focus on the fun and focus on the gameplay.
"It sounds naive, but for thirty years I've been operating on the basis that if you get the gameplay right, even in a crowded market, you'll be okay," he added.
Daglow isn't the only designer who started out creating games in the 70s and 80s to move into the social games space. Wizardry designer Brenda Brathwaite currently works with Doom co-creator John Romero at Loot Drop, while Ultima developer Richard Garriott is also working on a new social fantasy game at Portalarium.

Pre-orders for the Nintendo 3DS are now more than double that for the Wii at Amazon.co.uk, as the new portable console continues to exceed previous record holder the PlayStation 3.
Although the online retailer has released no pre-order figures it previously indicated that pre-orders for the 3DS had beaten that of the PlayStation 3 by 20 per cent. Now exactly a week later that figure stands at 71 per cent.
3DS pre-orders are also double that of the Wii and more than five times that for the Nintendo DSi.
3DS products already feature twice in the top ten bestsellers chart on Amazon, with games including Ridge Racer 3D, Pilotwings Resort, Super Monkey Ball 3D, Rayman 3D and Super Street Fighter IV occupying slots in the top twenty hot future releases.
Accessories such as screen protectors and cases also feature prominently in Amazon's own dynamically updated lists. Although at time of press the number one title on the Hot Future Releases list is Zumba Fitness on the Wii, with the Aqua Blue 3DS console at number two.
The top five most pre-ordered consoles at Amazon.co.uk are the Nintendo 3DS, the PlayStation 3 (launched in March 2007), Wii (December 2006), Kinect (November 2010), and PlayStation Move (September 2010).
Due for release on March 25 the Nintendo 3DS is currently priced at £187 on Amazon. This is one of the cheapest price tags at any major retailer, after an intense price war between stores following Nintendo of Europe's failure to set a recommend retail price.
"It's unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch, such high levels of interest are normally reserved for the play-at-home hardware like the ground-breaking Nintendo Wii and last year's Microsoft Kinect ," said Chris Poad, director of video games at Amazon.co.uk.
"Nintendo 3DS is launching at a time when interest in all things 3D is incredibly high and with the promise of real 3D graphics without glasses, it's a real breakthrough in handheld video game entertainment."

There has been no change in top three selling games of the week in Japan, with a very slow week of sales overall and no major new releases of note.
What effect the continuing earthquake disaster is having on the country's games business is unclear, but the stimulus from the launch of the Nintendo 3DS is already waning and there has been little else to excite the market this week.
Dynasty Warriors 7 remained the number one seller, but could manage only an additional 67,000 units after its 250,000 debut last week.
Square Enix's Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy remained the second biggest seller on 31,000 units and Professor Layton And The Mask of Miracle, still the best-selling 3DS title, kept its third place position with 18,000 sales.
The highest new entry of the week was Konami's Powerful Golf for Nintendo DS at number nine, but the title managed only a paltry 10,000 unit sales. As a result it only just came in ahead of Idea Factory's visual novel Hanaoni: Koisomeru Koku - Eikyuu no Shirushi, also on a rounded-down 10,000.
The only other new entries in the top 30 were Ubisoft's Splinter Cell 3D for the 3DS at number 18 and BioWare expansion (published by Spike in Japan) Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening at number 22.

A report by Eurogamer has indicated that the estimated cost of the components of a 3DS to Nintendo is £61.76, with the price to retailers thought to be around £170, a margin of £108.
Once the UK's new 20 per cent rate of VAT is added to that £170.63, minimum break-even price is £204.86. Added retailer overheads and staffing costs soon push that price north of £230.
Eurogamer's estimations come from David Carey, VP of technical intelligence for UBM TechInsights, which specialises in maximum investment return in consumer electronics.
Whilst the estimate is just that, it certainly represents a significant price hike on a console whichNintendo openly admits will be sold at a profit from the get-go.
Compared to the launch prices of Nintendo's other handhelds, the 3DS represents a significant cost increase, but UBM's analysis seems to indicate that the rise is somewhat disproportionate to the costs involved. The DSi, for example, launched at £149 in 2009, but cost just £9.17 less per unit for Nintendo to produce. However, that model came later in a line where previous iterations had absorbed a great deal of R&D costs.
"Little known fact, the margin on hardware for retailers is incredibly small," EEDAR's Jesse Divnich told Eurogamer. "Retailers make the profit on the games and accessories. Typically retailers see a 20 to 25 per cent margin on the games and 40 to 60 per cent on the accessories."
That's a view echoed by Don McCabe, CEO of the independent CHIPS retail network.
"By the time you take into account the VAT and various other bits and pieces, [retailers charging under £200] will not make a brass penny piece. Even for an online outfit, it's still going to cost them money to sell it for under 200 quid."
McCabe sees that as detrimental, not just to the public, but to the industry as a whole.
"It means that consumers won't go hands-on with the machine," McCabe believes. "You don't get hands-on via mail order and supermarkets very rarely do demonstrations.
"What happens is, your early adopters are going to buy the machine come hell or high water. It doesn't matter whether it's £200 or £230, they still would've bought it. But early adopters will not make the machine. It's wave two and wave three that make the machine and the only way that's going to happen is if people see it, feel it, touch it. 3D is very difficult to get across in a TV advert or in a newspaper. People need to experience it.
"We saw it with the Dreamcast. A critically acclaimed machine, but only the early adopters took it on, and it died," he continued.
"For a machine to grow and be viable, it needs to go beyond the early adopters. The actions that the Tescos and the mail order people of this world take have a detrimental effect on that.

The Air Force's Research Lab in Rome, NY. has one of the cheapest supercomputers ever made, and best of all over 3,000 of your friends can playTekken on it. The computer is made from 1,716 PlayStation 3s linked together, and is used to process images from spy planes. From the article: "The Air Force calls the souped-up PlayStations the Condor Supercomputer and says it is among the 40 fastest computers in the world. The Condor went online late last year, and it will likely change the way the Air Force and the Air National Guard watch things on the ground." We covered this story back in December when the Condor first went online.

From the article: 'US Air Force Combat controller Ron Walker had lost his iPhone 4 from his aircraft during flight. He works as a Jump Master, which is where he would ensure the airplane was in the correct position when he sends parachute jumpers out. The plane was moving at 150 mph and while looking out the door of the plane to find necessary ground landmarks his pocket opened and his iPhone flew out. When he noticed his phone fell, he thought all was lost. Upon landing and sharing the story with friends he installed the Find My iPhone app on one of their phones and went looking for his phone. He expected it to be battered from the fall but found the phone to be 100% un-damaged from the fall. The phone was protected by a Griffin Motif TPU iPhone case but it isn't clear whether the case protected the phone from the fall or the fact that it was cushioned by the brush that it hit.'"http://idle.slashdot.org/story/11/03...all-From-Plane ...
