An update for gargantuan simulation racer Gran Turismo 5 will be released on Saturday 27th November, creator Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed to Eurogamer in a new interview.

"We received a lot of demands for having more regulations placed on the online play. We're going to perform an update on the 27th that will include things like max power restrictions and weight restrictions," Yamauchi said.

"It's like a living creature, dynamically growing as we speak."

According to Yamauchi, the update will "refine the usability of the game to make it a better experience.

"I think it's going to be hard to find an end to that process," he admitted.

This morning it emerged that Sony has had to limit some areas of Gran Turismo 5 while it works out a way to ease the online congestion currently crippling the game.

The high demand coupled with GT5's constant communication with the internet is causing all sorts of problems that spill over even into single-player races.

Sony's temporary solution? Disable your PS3 internet connection.

"Yesterday the online service was kind of in a critical state," Yamauchi said.

"The data centre was set up to handle 500,000 connections but the number of connections we received greatly exceeded that amount and there was a high chance of experiencing problems as a result.

"The design of the GT game really integrates the online and offline parts. So the problems online actually affected the offline play as well. Right now we've changed the number of simultaneous connections that are possible to one million, doubling the number, and we're trying to gauge what will happen, but we don't know at this point in time."

Yamauchi also responded to criticism of the online feature set, revealing to Eurogamer, "Online updates are planned of course for leaderboards and matchmaking - [they're] all planned in the process of evolution."

The Polyphony Digital boss pledged that his team would be "upgrading every week, every month" to improve the game, which took five years to develop.

Oli reviewed Gran Turismo 5 for Eurogamer, awarding it 9/10.

With iOS 4.2 only a few days old, speculation has already turned to iOS 4.3: specifically, the possibility that we'll see upgraded firmware as soon as mid-December. MacStories is reporting that 4.3 will drop in a few weeks, with bug fixes and an API for app subscriptions to support the new "iPad newspaper" called The Daily.

As we know, iOS 4.2 took longer than Apple had expected: when the WiFi bug in the 4.2 golden master was found, they had to go back to the lab to roll out the 4.2.1 version that was released on Monday. According to MacStories, 4.2 was supposed to be out in the early part of November, preparing the way for 4.3 on all devices that would be able to support billing for apps that you subscribe to, rather than pay for once..

Apple has defeated TinyUmbrella's iPhone 4 baseband protection by implementing a boot level signature check in iOS 4.2.1. It's probably unnecessary to reiterate the warning that's been out there since before the upgrade dropped, but unlockers should really, really avoid upgrading. Meanwhile, MuscleNerd wishes everybody a happy Thanksgiving, and says he thinks the next version of ultrasn0w may be ready, at least for some users, as soon as Sunday.

Adventurous unlockers have already found that if they try to run iOS 4.2.1 on a device with an older baseband, it will show the message "An unknown error has occurred" and go into recovery mode. TinyUmbrella is no longer able to kick iPhones out of recovery for iOS 4.2.1 because the baseband nonce is now checked, just like the SHSH is checked for firmware revs. So at this point there's no way out of that except to install the new baseband...

Sony will launch the heavily rumoured PlayStation Phone in February 2011, a new report claims.

It will be officially unveiled on 9th December, PocketGamer reckons (thanks, VG247).

This latest rumour was sparked by French blog Nowereelse.fr, which has received an image of what looks like a press invitation to a Sony event.

It shows the four famous PlayStation symbols next to an image of a phone.

The invite reads: "The most awaited event of the past 10 years." Hasn't Sony heard of the X-Factor final?

According to website MobileCrunch, the phone will be formerly launched next February.

Apparently the phone's screen is "on par" with the iPhone's Retina display. Sony's Bravia technology is said to have "trickled" in here, with Sony Ericsson considering leveraging the Bravia brand when highlighting the display.

Games will be priced at mobile game rates, not PSP rates. Sony Ericsson currently has the off-contract price somewhere around $500 (£318 approx), with that purchase including five free games.

The PlayStation Phone, along with the PSP2, is one of the worst kept secrets in gaming.

On Monday Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg said, "There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere.

"Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that's very interesting. Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn't we use that? Gaming, including content, is a very interesting proposition."

According to the Wall Street Journal, the PlayStation Phone will carry the Sony Ericsson Xperia brand, run Google Android and offer games through an application.

Nordberg plans a big splash at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona this February 2011 – could that tie in with the rumoured launch?

The PlayStation Phone has long been speculated. It appeared to be on the verge of confirmation last month when a series of target images were leaked and numerous reports backed them up.

Sony has had to limit some areas of Gran Turismo 5 while it works out a way to ease the online congestion currently crippling the game.

Sony is sorry, but the high demand coupled with GT5's constant communication with the internet is causing all sorts of problems that spill over even into single-player races.

Sony's temporary solution? Disable your PS3 internet connection.

"Because GT5 performs online access not only when participating in online races and using community features, but also when starting the game and during the various screen displays in GT Mode, unfortunately this online congestion is also affecting standard gameplay," wrote Sony on the GT5 in-game news feed.

"Currently we are simultaneously working on several different solutions to improve the network status and alleviate the network congestion as soon as possible. We are expecting to be able to provide a proper online service again soon.

"We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience."

Eurogamer's Digital Foundry, which has first-hand experience of these issues, recalls a "longer than comfortable lag" when navigating the Gran Turismo 5 menus and says accessing the GT5 news feed is a "time-consuming exercise".

Digital Foundry said issues are also prevalent with Gran Turismo 5's matchmaking, which can pit Minis up against Bugatti Veyrons - the world's fastest road car. And sometimes even connecting to lobbies doesn't work.

The full message from Sony reads:

Notice Regarding the Status of the Online Service

Currently the online service of Gran Turismo 5 (GT5) is experiencing some extreme online traffic congestion.

Because GT5 performs online access not only when participating in online races and using community features, but also when starting the game and during the various screen displays in GT Mode, unfortunately this online congestion is also affecting standard gameplay.

If you are experiencing the following symptoms, we recommend that you temporarily play GT5 without connecting the PlayStation 3 (PS3) to the network.

    (A) If you are finding it takes several minutes before being able to perform any actions in the following screens:

Before the start of the opening movie, immediately after launching the game.
At the top screen after the game has started.
In various screens within GT Mode.
    (B) Or, when it takes several minutes or more to gain a result when the following operations are performed:

When entering the open lobby, if it takes several minutes or more before the room list is acquired and displayed.
When clicking on an ID in the participant list of a room, if it takes several minutes or more before the menu appears.
When writing on the message boards within Community, if it is taking several minutes or more for your posts to appear.
*Also, some of the following features have been limited intentionally as a measure to temporarily alleviate some of the network traffic. Due to these limitations, you will find that:

The viewing and update of the [Log] in the Community section of GT Mode has been temporarily disabled.
Changes to the Profile may not update in some cases.
Changes to the Friend List may not update in some cases.
Currently we are simultaneously working on several different solutions to improve the network status and alleviate the network congestion as soon as possible. We are expecting to be able to provide a proper online service again soon.

We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.

    Reference Information

Temporary measures you can take for playing Offline.

The following are procedures for preventing the PS3 from accesssing the network when playing GT5.

Please note the steps introduced here are only temporary procedures you can take until the network conditions are improved.

If GT5 is currently running, please quit the game.
Go to [Settings] -> [Network Connections] -> [Internet Connection] and swtich the selection to [Disabled]
    Start GT5.
