Third-party console accessory maker Mad Catz has acquired fellow Californian company Tritton, a creator of high-end audio headsets.

In the deal, struck yesterday, Mad Catz gains 100 per cent ownership of Tritton, in exchange for $1 million up-front and a promise of up to $9 million across five years, dependent on the headset manufacturer's sales performance.

As part of the acquisition, Mad Catz will be creating roles for Tritton founder and CEO Christopher Von Huben, and a 'limited number' of other key Tritton employees.

"We are thrilled to be joining the Mad Catz organisation," said Von Huben. "Tritton has built a successful brand and lineup of gaming audio headsets and computer peripheral products. I am confident that with Mad Catz' global capabilities we can significantly increase our market penetration and more rapidly grow the Tritton brand."

Mad Catz has previously acquired game controller manufacturers Saitek and Joytech, and in February revealed Christmas 2009's profits were up 19 per cent on 2008's, with a net profit of $48.8 million.

In April, Mad Catz signed a multi-year deal with music game developer Harmonix to create all future accessories for the Rock Band franchise - including the upcoming Rock Band 3. It is possible that Tritton's audio device technology will be leveraged for this purpose.

Tritton's range of headphone and microphone all-in-ones retail for between $69.99 and $169.99, many of which offer wireless and surround sound support, and are compatible with all current-gen gaming platforms. The company also manufactures several video output devices for the PC. In 2009, the firm generated $8 million in revenue.

"The gaming headset category is one of the fastest growing within the gaming sector, and the acquisition of Tritton significantly enhances Mad Catz' opportunities in this very attractive market segment," said Darren Richardson, President and CEO of Mad Catz.

"Tritton has developed an attractive portfolio of premium products and a brand that resonates strongly with gaming enthusiasts. Additionally, this acquisition further diversifies Mad Catz' revenue base and is consistent with our strategy to create shareholder value by leveraging our global capabilities with high-value products that enhance the gaming experience."

The iPad only went on sale outside the US on 28 May, but according to AdMob, it already has a big proportion of overseas users.
The mobile advertising firm says that according to its network stats, 38% of iPads accessing its network of ads in May were outside the US.
The biggest markets were Japan (5%), the UK (4%), China (4%) and Canada (3%), with three of those four getting a sharp boost in the number of iPad users over the weekend, once the device went on sale there.
China is the exception, yet according to AdMob's Mike Fyall, "we have seen consistently strong iPad usage in China since the device first launched".
AdMob tracked around 850,000 unique iPads during May.

The company has just launched its iPad SDK, allowing iPad developers to incorporate its ad units in their applications.

Publisher EA has conceded that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 won’t outsell its direct rival Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 this time out – but its believes the foundations have been laid for future success.
The company spoke quite openly about its aspirations for the title upon its release earlier this year, and analysts have since pegged the series’ as a real contender for the console FPS throne.
“It’s been great,” VP and UK GM Keith Ramsdale told MCV. “The press reaction has been focused largely on how good the multiplayer is. It’s now recognised as genre defining, and the way the market’s going, that’s key.
“Are we going to beat Modern Warfare sales this year with any single title? No. But do we have a long-term goal of taking more market share or possibly growing the market? Yes.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Ramsdale outlines the five elements EA now sees it main business as falling into – football, racing, Sims, shooters and fitness.

“We consider them all to be year-round opportunities,” he added. “And that means year-round work with retail, year-round marketing and year-round communication with the communities – a key part of which is new content.”

PS3 and PC MMO DC Universe has finally been given a release date by Sony Online Entertainment - or a release month, at least.

Best send your spandex to the dry cleaners now because you'll be called to action by the likes of Batman, Superman and Green Lantern in November.

It seems like we've been reporting on DC Universe Online for years. Mainly because we have.

UK retailers are selling Nintendo's DSi console for £119.99 following the announcement of a price cut earlier today.

CVG has been told by senior retail sources that £129.99 is the widely 'agreed' retail price for the device following the drop - but that certain chains have already sliced another £10 off.

The standard price for the console at the likes of HMV, GAME and Amazon is already £119.99 online and at various High Street locations.

Nintendo's announcement said that the new trade price would come into effect on June 18 - but it appears UK retail isn't shy in jumping the gun.

Nintendo maintains that - unlike other hardware distributors - it doesn't set a 'suggested retail price', rather letting individual retailers set their mark-up.

Emergent has revealed its Gamebryo Lightspeed engine has been licenced to a studio working on a WiiWare title.
The announcement is, as Emergent planned, a demonstration of the degree of scalability that the Gamebryo LightSpeed engine benefits from.
Emergent’s latest platform was used in the development of Bethesda title Fallout 3 – a high-profile title available on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
Yet Polish studio Bloober Team will hope to make the most out of the engine for Last Flight; a downloadable action-adventure horror game available via WiiWare.
“We were shopping for a fully featured game engine and tool chain ready to use out of the box, and Gamebryo was the only development platform that met our standards,” said Pawel Lewandowski of Bloober Team.

“In contrast to other engines available for Wii, Emergent’s tech is really well documented. Not only is there a standard API documentation, but all tools are documented as well. Provided examples are useful and commented with great detail.”
