PayPal has announced that its PayPal Mobile iPhone app has been downloaded more than one million times since its release in mid-March.
The app lets people transfer money from their PayPal account, while also splitting restaurant bills, collecting money for events and donating to charities.
It also uses the Bump API, allowing people to transfer money by bumping their iPhones together.
"One million downloads shows just how ready people are to live a cashless and card-free culture with their wallet living safely in the cloud," says PayPal's VP of platform and emerging technology Osama Bedier.
It'll be interesting to see how much money is being transferred using the app - hopefully PayPal will release that kind of stat later in the year, once the app has been out for a few months.

Role-playing sequel Etrian Odyssey III has entered straight in at number one in the latest weekly Japanese sales chart, with Atlus' hardcore dungeon crawler recording its best opening yet for the series.

Although Etrian Odyssey III's first week sales of 88,000 are low by the normal standards of a Japanese number one they easily eclipse the 33,000 unit sales of the original game and 69,000 record of the first sequel.

The game's success knocked previous number one, Tecmo Koei's Fist of the North Star anime tie-in, down to second place with 72,000 unit sales.

The second highest entry of the week, at number three, was Konami's annual iteration in the Pro Baseball Spirits series. The PlayStation 3 version of the game was the biggest seller with 57,000 unit sales, with the PSP version just behind at number four on 51,000.

The PlayStation 2 version also entered the charts at number 10 with 21,000 unit sales.

With the rest of the chart composed of the usual evergreen Nintendo titles, and recently dethroned number ones such as Yakuza 4 and Pokemon Ranger, the only other new entry in the top 10 was Tecmo Koei's Dead or Alive Paradise for PSP.

Although critically mauled for its lack of content and sexist overtones in the West, the game entered the Japanese charts at number nine with 32,000 unit sales.

    1. Etrian Odyssey III (DS)
    2. Fist of the North Star (PS3)
    3. Pro Baseball Spirits 2010 (PS3)
    4. Pro Baseball Spirits 2010 (PSP)
    5. New Super Mario Bros Wii (Wii)
    6. Friend Collection (DS)
    7. Yakuza 4 (PS3)
    8. Pokemon Ranger: Tracks of Light (DS)
    9. Dead Or Alive Paradise (PSP)
    10. Pro Baseball Spirits 2010 (PS2)

Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series for Konami, has predicted that new networking technologies will make the videogame console obsolete in the near future.

Although he did not mention cloud computing or existing services such as OnLive by name, Kojima commented that: "In the near future, we'll have games that don't depend on any platform".

"Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel - wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience," he added.

Kojima was speaking at a press conference for forthcoming PSP title Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, at which he also announced the inclusion of characters and creatures from Capcom's Monster Hunter series in the game.

The comments were reported by Reuters, with Sony Japan president Hiroshi Kawano describing the statement as "a bold prediction".

Kojima also indicated his desire to create motion pictures, although no details of potential projects were announced.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 "Stimulus" map pack saw more than 1 million downloads in its first 24 hours of availability, according to publisher Activision.

The downloadable content was released on Xbox Live on March 30, with more than 2.5 million downloads in the first week.

Two map packs were initially announced by Activision, both of which will be 30 day exclusives for the Xbox 360 version of the game.

The map pack contains five new maps for the game, three brand new designs and two based on maps from earlier title Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

The downloadable content has proven controversial with some fans, in part due to its high cost of 1200 Microsoft Points ($15/£10.28) - more than previous Call of Duty map packs.

There was also considerable server disruption on the day of the pack's release, with some in-game features being affected. Although none of these issues appear to have affected its financial success.

Parents must take responsibility for keeping violent content away from children - that was the message this morning from Mothers Against Violence in a BBC Radio Leeds debate on violent videogames.

A spokesperson for the organisation, whose aim is to "promote the eradication of violence and to relieve the victims of the effects of violence within the community", told the station: "I'm not directly blaming games, I'm blaming parents," adding: "If someone doesn't do something where does it stop?"

Grand Theft Auto was the inevitable focal point of the discussion - between the parent, presenters and a games journalists - with the handheld versions of the series produced locally at Rockstar Leeds.

On GTA, the mother said: "Why is it okay to beat up a prostitute, but not okay to pick up a normal civilian?" In fact, GTA features the ability to pick up and drive around 'normal civilians'.

A broader point made was that many parents, despite age-ratings on packaging, don't pay attention to the games their children are playing, not are they aware of the negative effects they could have.

The Mothers Against Violence spokesperson called on other mothers to help educate parents on the issue, stating: "It just takes one of us to spread the word, to plant the seed." It's about "taking the time to study what games are all about," she added, expressing fears that violent games were "desensitising" children who are "becoming complacent and think they're invincible".

Rockstar issued a statement to BBC Radio Leeds, stating it "submits every game to the appropriate ratings body", adding that the GTA series is "18-rated and is entertainment clearly aimed at an adult audience".

Videogames in the UK are currently age-rated by the BBFC and PEGI, with the latter system set to be adopted as the sole standard. Part of the controversial Digital Economy Bill - which receives its third reading in UK parliament today - the system is expected to pass into law before next months general election.

The UK games industry has said it will fund a parental awareness campaign on the new ratings.

Halo 3 will be released digitally on Xbox Live's Games on Demand service on 20th April.

In Europe, the Bungie shooter will be joined the same week by guilty pleasure Saints Row, and preceded on 13th April by Devil May Cry 4. North Americans get Tomb Raider: Legend instead.

All this was confirmed by Xbox's Major Nelson in a Marketplace release schedule for the coming weeks.

You'll be able to get price reductions on Left 4 Dead's Crash Course DLC and Borderlands' The Zombie Island of Doctor Ned add-on from 12th and 19th April respectively. Retro fiends can enjoy Final Fight: Double Impact on Xbox Live Arcade in a week's time, on the 14th.

Expect to see add-ons for Mega Man 10 this week, and Forza Motorsport 3 next week.

Seems like April will be as quiet for new releases on Xbox Live as it is in the shops. Roll on May!

Forthcoming PSP game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will feature characters from the Monster Hunter series, including mascot Felyne.

News of the crossover emerged via Famitsu magazine, which reported that creatures such as the Tigrex and Velociprey will appear in the game.

MGS creator Hideo Kojima confirmed the plans at a press conference in Tokyo. According to Andriasang a video of Snake fighting some familiar enemies was shown, accompanied by Monster Hunter background music. "It looks like Monster Hunter, but with Snake," apparently.

Kojima will embark on a world tour to mark the release of Peace Walker, beginning when the game is released in Japan on 29th April. A European launch will follow on 18th June.
