A 60 per cent rise on last year.
iPhone shipments hit 93 million in 2011, and the newly unveiled iPhone 5 is expected to send total shipments for the year rocketing by 60 per cent and smash past 149m, according to IHS.
Traditionally, whispers of a new iPhone approaching prompts consumers to stave off buying the current design, which was the case this year when Q3 shipments hit 26m and fell from Q2's 35.1m.
But the firm is expected to bounce back to record the biggest quarterly iPhone sales in history.
Daniel Gleeson, mobile analyst, IHS, said: "Unlike last year's release of the iPhone 4S, this year's iPhone 5 announcement comes as a significant departure from previous models.
"The addition of a new, larger screen is a fundamental change in product design. Furthermore, the iPhone 5 is the first member of Apple's smartphone line to feature 4G long term evolution (LTE) connectivity, accelerating data speeds dramatically compared to previous models. These major improvements will drive strong sales for the iPhone 5."

    2. Apple iPhone

Three Motorala Razr devices measure in at 7.1mm.
The iPhone 5 (Apple's worst kept secret) was unveiled yesterday, boasting a four-inch display and a slimmer design, among other things.
Such was the confidence of Apple, the Cupertino firm basked in its own adulation and raved how the "iPhone 5 is the thinnest smartphone in the world."
    Apple lied.
The 7.6mm depth may well be 18 per cent thinner than the iPhone 4S, but Strategy Analytics notes that the Motorola RAZR XT909, Motorola DROID RAZR CDMA, and Motorola RAZR XT910 are all 7.1mm thick.
Although some commenters have suggested that the RAZR devices aren't as thin as Motorola claims, the fact remains that there are still other phones out there thinner than the iPhone 5. Namely:

    • Huawei Ascend P1 S (6.68mm)
    • Fujitsu ARROWS ES IS12F (6.70mm)
    • Pantech Vega S5 (6.89mm)

Apple recently advertised the new iPad as an LTE device, but savvy users complained and shot the company's claims down, given that LTE didn't (and still doesn't) exist in some countries at the time of launch.

    2. Apple iPhone

Four-inch Retina Display, but no jaw-dropping revelations.
Let's talk about the iPhone 5. (Click here for all related stories)
Prior to its launch last night, Apple's latest gadget had already secured a mammoth following, with 10m people expected to buy one on September 21st – massively outstripping the 4m 4Ss sold in three days.
Rumours covered plausible features like NFC, but also theridiculous, with talk of an $800 price tag and Apple-made bolts that couldn't be unscrewed.
ME said Apple must be innovative for true success, avoiding the same rehashed design with minor additions like Siri and improved cameras, giving loyalists what they deserve.
Well, the iPhone 5 does have an improved camera, but for the first time it also has a four-inch screen, 4G LTE and an A6 processor.
It also claimed to be the "world's thinnest smartphone" – it isn't.
93 per cent of consumers wanted a stronger screen and 86 per cent wanted a mini USB port – they didn't get their wishes.
The most notable feature missing from the device, of course, is NFC, meaning Apple is now trailing its rival Samsung who has shifted 20m NFC-enabled Galaxy S III phones in 100 days.
Check out some opinions from industry insiders below (accessories, enterprise apps, market research, social gaming.)
Dan Ashman, head of product at Breffo, said: "The new iPhone 5 presents a huge opportunity for the accessory industry especially with the new 80 per cent smaller adapter."
Lynnette Prigmore, head of product, Proporta said: "We're really pleased to see Apple live up to the expectations surrounding the iPhone 5. With the upgraded graphic ability, the new A6 chip and impressive camera function, Apple have once again raised the bar for the Smartphone industry."
Jim Hemmer, CEO of Antenna Software, said: "The iPhone 5 has not been re-designed – it has been re-fitted. It was the same story with the new iPad when it launched earlier this year, and that’s going to raise more questions about Apple’s ability to innovate in the post-Jobs era.
"Even more so when you consider that the most significant update to the iPhone 5’s hardware — an increased screen size — looks like it’s straight out of Samsung’s playbook."
Hemmer makes a brilliant point, large screen sizes is what Samsung is famed for, yet Apple saw fit to sue Samsung left, right, and centre, which may see the tables turn in due course.
Dominic Sunnebo, consumer insight director, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: "The release of the iPhone 5 will give Apple a huge spike in market share as the large number of out of contract iPhone users upgrade to the new device.
"Apple customers are particularly loyal to their brand, and around 90 per cent of Apple consumers who are out of contract have told us they plan to upgrade to the latest model.
Alex Rigby, chief creative officer and co-founder of Playdemic, said: "For gamers who enjoy graphically intensive experiences, the new iPhone brings the experience closer to console quality gaming.
"One thing that still lacks however is improvements to the actual gameplay. While a wider screen provides more space for viewing when thumbs are on the screen, a lack of haptics or touch capabilities on the back prevents a true console gameplay experience."
What do you reckon? Are you ordering your accessories already? Can the iPhone rival consoles? Or is it just a nicely dressed refit that nabs inspiration from Samsung?

    2. Nintendo Wii News

    via Eurogamer

Back in May, it seemed like Bayonetta 2 was dead in the water. The original attracted critical praise aplenty, but failed to make much of a dent in the charts and the only statement that developer Platinum Games would make was that they'd love to make a sequel, but only when the time was right.

Well, it turns out that the time was right all along, and Bayonetta 2 will not only be a Wii U exclusive but will be published by Nintendo, perhaps the most unlikely saviour for a series with such a strong emphasis on violence and sexuality. The first game was of course published by Nintendo's old sparring partner, Sega.

The reveal of Bayonetta 2 as a Wii U exclusive was arguably the highlight of Nintendo's video announcement today, with a brief flash of footage and the promise that Yusuke Hashimoto of Platinum Games is once again at the helm. Will the game make use of the Wii U's unique touchscreen gamepad, or has it been designed with the more familiar Pro Controller joypad in mind? We'll have to wait and see. For now, let's just be happy that one of the great action games has been given a new lease of life. ...

At long last, the iPhone 5. We just got our hands on Apple's latest smartphone following its unveiling in San Francisco, and suffice it to say, it's a beautiful thing. Some might say we've been waiting for this moment since October 4th of last year, but another crowd may say that the real next-gen iPhone has been on the burner for much longer. Indeed, this is the first iPhone since June of 2010 to showcase an entirely new design, but it's obvious that Apple's not going to deviate far when it comes to aesthetics.
Apple followers will aptly recall Steve Jobs' quote in July of 2010 -- you know, that one about "no one" wanting a big phone, with current CEO Tim Cook seated just feet from Steve as the phrase was uttered. Now, however, Apple's inching ever closer to that very realm, with an elongated 4-inch display that enables new apps to take advantage of more pixels (1,136 x 640), while legacy apps can still operate within a familiar space. The phone itself doesn't feel too much different than the iPhone 4 and 4S; yes, it's a bit taller, but by keeping the width the same, you'll utilize a very familiar grasp to hold it.
In typical Apple fashion, even the finest details have been worked over tirelessly. The metal feels downright elegant to the touch, and the same line we've said time and time again applies here: there's no doubting the premium fit and finish when you clutch one of these things. Yeah, the headphone port's now on the bottom, but avid Galaxy Nexus iPod touch users shouldn't have too much trouble adjusting.

It's been quite a while since the Shuffle has been updated, but we're happy to say that Apple has shown the tiniest of its music players some much needed love. There's only one change here, but it's by far the most important -- colors! Now the tiny PMPs will match their revamped "iTouch" brothers. Just, you know, with much less functionality. There's even a soft and subtle pink model for all those ladies out there that love being pandered to and a Project (RED) version for the socially conscious. The latest generation of the shuffle should start shipping today.

It's obvious that the iPhone 5 is the star of today's show, but Apple's not letting its iPod line go untouched. The newest iPod touch takes a note from the newfangled display on its cellular sibling, bringing a vaster panel (the same 4-inch, 1,136 x 640 one found on the new iPhone). At 88 grams and just 6.1mm thick, it's also shockingly thin and light -- of course, the anodized aluminum backing makes it feel like a premium piece of kit. Premium, as in, right up there with the iPhone. In a world where Apple's seeing its iPod sales sink quarter after quarter due to self-cannibalization from the iPad and iPhone, it's interesting (but appreciated) to see so much effort placed on the new iPod touch.
The introduction of the dual-core A5 chip (that's dual-core on the CPU and the graphics side) is a huge boon for the touch. Apple's claiming a 7x improvement in graphics, and given that this thing is claiming such a huge swath of the mobile gaming market, it's pretty much a necessity. Indeed, our interactions with the device were notably faster than on the prior touch. We didn't exactly have 40 hours here to test the audio playback claims (in fact, we didn't even have eight to test the claims on video), but you can bet that'll be a huge selling point.

Not to be outdone by a refreshed iPod touch (and, let's face it, a new iPhone), Apple also shot out a 5.4mm-thick iPod nano today -- that's 38 percent thinner than the one it replaces. We just got our hands on the newest, tiniest music player outside of Apple's product launch today, replete with a 2.5-inch multitouch panel and a familiar Home button. As you'd expect, the enlarged display is hugely beneficial. While there's no bona fide version of iOS on here, the stripped-down variant seems sufficient for handling media alone. As if the ability to watch widescreen video wasn't enough, fitness gurus are also apt to take notice -- inbuilt support for Nike+ gear, along with Bluetooth, make this one potent device.
The Lightning connector seems to make a lot of sense here, given the dearth of real estate along the bottom, but somehow the company squeezed a big enough battery in here to net some 30 reported hours of battery life. In playing with it, we found screen transitions to be adequately smooth, and video playback was surprisingly enjoyable to watch. The screen is most definitely less stunning than the one on the iPod touch, but at $149, you can bet quite a bit of these end up in stockings this holiday season.
