You know how it is -- we're frightened and appalled by the thought of unmanned killing machines, but if they must exist we really, really want to play with one. The US Army's latest nightmarish deathcopter / awesome tech toy is a little something called the Autonomous Rotorcraft Sniper System (ARSS). Essentially a .338-caliber rifle mounted to the bottom of a Vigilante unmanned helicopter (though it could eventually be made to work on a Predator drone, for instance), this bad boy utilizes a modified Xbox 360 game contoller for targeting while the vehicle itself stays put courtesy of its autopilot functions. Never again will your favorite sniper need to leave the comfort of his barracks! Airborne testing begins in July, with autonomy to come soon after that and a possible robot apocalypse estimated for Q4 2011.

There's a lot to love about the special edition 160GB Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete Cloud Black PlayStation 3 bundle that was unleashed this week in Japan -- a fancy Strife Wolf emblem, a copy of Advent Children Complete on Blu-ray, and a Final Fantasy XIII demo you can't play anywhere else -- but perhaps our favorite part is the console's matte finish. For us, a smudge-resistant PS3 is well worth the 49,980 yen (US $505) price of admission. 1UP has the unboxing,

Having mentioned about XCM announcing Rumble Joystick for PS3 with Rumle, XCM has released the Rumble Joystick as well as final product images.

Here are some of the features:
    • Built in Rumble function (world first Rumble joystick compatible with PS3™ console)
    • 4 Memory Buttons - Program up to 20 button and joystick movement combos to a single button to pull off devastating moves at will!
    • Independent Rapid Fire / Turbo Modes Built In - Just flip the switch of the button you want to enable rapid fire for and its done.
    • LED buttons
    • Plug and Play - Just plug the joystick into your PS3™ console via the USB port and you are all set.
    • 2 at the Same Time - Just in case you are kind enough to allow someone else to use one at the same time, you can plug 2 of these into the same PS3™ console and use them both to battle each other!
    • Compatible with all PS3™ consoles

You can purchase this from Divineo, Play-Asia, Extreme-Mods and ConsoleSource.

The final design has a chrome casing. Although it looks nice, expect to have fingerprints galore. If you're anal about things like that, you might want to think real hard if its worth it over your OCD.

Wii sales have been the lowest they've ever been in Japan. Is the Japanese public losing interest? Screen Digest analyst Ed Barton told GameBizBlog that the Wii sales downturn is mostly due to the lack of staying power exhibited by Animal Crossing: City Folk and Wii Music.

Barton says that the continued success of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii only back up his claim. "These are older games that obviously have shown tremendous stamina, but Nintendo always needs to bring out new ways to drive console sales forward, and we just didn't see that with Wii Music and City Folk." Even though both titles sold decently enough (Animal Crossing was one of the region's top 10 selling games in 2008 and Wii Music debuted with 92,000 units sold in its first week), they lacked the necessary sales stamina of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii.

He says that there isn't much hope on the horizon either, despite the imminent release of Monster Hunter 3 on Wii. He warns that trying to transfer the user base from handheld to home console is risky and that the gamble may not pay off for Nintendo. Barton is of the mind that "it won't have the same level of success that it had on the PSP."

Originally released on the PlayStation 2 in 2002, mecha video game Armored Core 3 is getting a PSP port.

As with most PSP ports, it will feature ad-hoc wireless play as well as customization options. Paint your mecha pink! You know you want to.

    Thanks cacophanus for the tip!

Gamespot is running a feature looking into the facts behind gaming addiction: what it is, whether it exists, and why the need still exists for objective research into the issue. Quoting:
"[Richard M. Ryan, a psychologist and professor of psychology, psychiatry, and education at the University of Rochester in New York] thinks the lack of quality research into video game overuse will be rectified with time as games become more sophisticated in the ways they satisfy people's psychological needs. 'We have a lot of people, some in the media and some in the sciences, who are too ready to make very strong claims about video games, whether we are talking about aggression, addiction, or cultural estrangement, based on very little evidence. I think that is especially how the media often sells stories. Some commentators exaggerate risks, and on the other hand there are defenders of games who deny any and all problems and attack any perceived bad news. Games are relatively new in our culture, and such vacillation between hysteria and denial I suspect often greets any new phenomenon, from hip-hop to the Internet to video games. Both sides usually have some part of the truth, but it may be a while before at least we as scientists, much less as a society, have a coherent understanding.'"

Despite a number of high-profile releases on the PlayStation Network in March, Thatgamecompany’s uniquely tranquil Flower remained the best selling game on Sony’s portal last month.
It’s the second month on the trot that Flower has captured the top spot, and in doing so in March it successfully fended off the advances of new releases such as Sony pair Buzz Junior: Jungle Party and Burn Zombie Burn, Worms and Warner’s download-only Watchmen – the latter of which failed to trouble the top ten at all.
New entries included Wheel of Fortune and Red Baron Arcade, though perhaps more notable is Bandai Namco’s Noby Noby Boy slipping just one place to capture third spot – though considering the admission from creator Keita Takahashi that the game is not selling strongly, perhaps this asks questions about the number of digital units Sony is successfully shifting.

On that subject, the fascinating Noby Noby Stats website shows that 19,000 new players registered their characters in March. Obviously, online registration is not necessarily an indication of total sales – but for a title in which internet functionality is so fundamental, it’s logical to presume the few offline players have dabbled.
Here’s the full PSN March top ten, as reported by Gamerbytes:
    1. Flower
    2. Wheel of Fortune
    3. Noby Noby Boy
    4. Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
    5. Mortal Kombat II
    6. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
    7. 3 on 3 NHL Arcade
    8. Red Baron Arcade
    9. Age of Booty
    10. Linger in Shadows
