Google recently updated their Google Mobile App with a couple new features. Voice Search automatically starts listening when you raise the phone to your ear. Just say what you’re looking for, and it will poll Google and return the results. The app leverages Google’s voice recognition engine, which they’ve been training with Goog-411. [Andy Baio] has been experimenting with audio transcription and was curious what the new app was doing behind the scenes. He started by sniffing the packets as they traversed his network. Unfortunately, the size of the data packets transmitted is so small that he’s almost certain he’s missing something. He’d appreciate any help in this endeavor. Part of the problem might be Google getting special treatment and using undocumented iPhone SDK features.

The ball is well and truly rolling on weekly LittleBigPlanet updates, with this week's new costumes detailed and priced.

First up is the 'Sack-in-the-box' costume, which puts Sackboy's head in a TV, designed by the winner of the US Official in-game SackBoy Costume Contest. That one's free.

And for $2.99 (or around the £2 mark over here), Media Molecule is putting out five LocoRoco-themed costumes in honour of the release of LocoRoco 2 next month.

The PS Blog also details a new super-rare Sackboy Prize Crown, which be given away as an in-game reward to winner of US-only LittleBigChallenges, starting with a challenge to create a level that celebrates the second anniversary of PS3.

Check out the new costumes to the right, here. ...

Epic has made fixing Gears of War 2's skill-based matchmaking its top priority, and hopes to have a solution soon.

"We're aware that some folks are experiencing longer-than-ideal wait times while using the skill-based public matchmaking in Gears 2 multiplayer," said senior producer Rod Fergusson on the official forums.

"We're working on some solutions but it's a complicated issue as there isn't any one problem; it's a combination of factors. Clearly, scale is one of them as we've had millions of successful matches played online so far, [but] a small percentage of players are having issues, which is unacceptable.

"We're working closely with Microsoft to address the matchmaking issues, I promise you that it is our number one priority, and we hope to have an update soon," he said.

Until then, he suggested a few workarounds. Trying different playlists can reduce delays, as can having at least two people in the party before matchmaking; a full team of five, incidentally, is the fastest way.

Re-inviting the nine other people in the game immediately after one finishes is also a top tip from Fergusson, although this will turn the match into a private affair. There's benefits to this, such as being able to pick maps and modes, although the outcome will not be recorded or ranked.

He suggests double-checking the NAT settings with your router, too.

Still, little of this seems to have put people off playing Gears of War 2, which continues to attract the most unique users on Xbox Live according to Major Nelson's charts.

Fergusson added that there have been 3 million ranked multiplayer matches played and over 1 million screenshots uploaded to the official website.

And from those stats he has worked out that Horde is the most popular multiplayer mode, River is the map of choice, and the Gnasher weapon has notched-up the most kills. ...

Well, we extended the courtesy to the PS3 on its special day, so it seems only fair that Nintendo's little guy should get his own day in the sun. Two years ago today you either discovered that you really could have fun flailing around looking like a dork or, if you're a senior citizen, discovered that video games had been invented.

In those two years the Wii has carved its own niche, bridging gaps between different gaming audiences and (occasionally) leaving some feeling left out of the fun. What do you think of the first 24 months and what are you looking for in the Wii's next 12? ...

EA has refused to comment on "rumour and speculation" that a sequel to brilliant Wii puzzle game Boom Blox is in the works.

That's according to US website Variety, which claims returning developer EA Los Angeles has already begun fleshing out the project.

There's no word on whether Boom Blox 2 will be a Wii-only game, nor whether Steven Spielberg will once again be involved.

The source of all this, interestingly, is a former employee of "Blueprint" - a supposedly top secret EA studio tasked with dreaming up new IP.

The developer has apparently been shut down, although no one will acknowledge the existence of "Blueprint" or issue an official announcement. Sounds like the X-Files.

Boom Blox was released on Wii back in May, and fell under Ellie's uncompromising eye for appraisal. But, much to our surprise, the game made such an impression that Ellie was soon championing its cause. ...

Home version 1.0 - the version that'll be released to the public - will be made available to closed beta testers tomorrow, according to supposed leaked info.

In what looks like a message intended only for closed beta testers themselves are the release plans for Home in the coming weeks.

"1.0 will arrive in the closed beta this Thursday the 20th and will entail a downtime starting in the morning," reads the document.

"On Friday we will send out our first batch of invitations to new testers to help load-test 1.0 and the new servers that are coming online in the next week or so," it adds.

"We have 2 further batches of invitations scheduled for the following week and overall we'll be inviting a huge number of people into the closed beta in SCEE territories."

Unfortunately though, it says: "Open Beta will be here when it's here." We don't like the sound of that.

There's a whole bunch of details and features in the document over on Tawkn which, if fake, does remarkably well to seem pretty real. Sony, however, has issued CVG with a "no comment" on the matter. ...

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime has said that there will not be enough supply of the Wii Fit peripheral to meet demand this Christmas.

"With Wii hardware, I think we've got a good shot at meeting demand during the holidays," Fils-Aime told Forbes. "With Wii Fit, I know we'll fall short."

He also said that he doesn't think a number of third-party Nintendo developers fully understand the potential of the Wii, leaving them unable to find success with their products.

"I will be able to say our licensees 'get it' when their very best content is on our platform," he says. "And with very few exceptions today, that's not the case."

Fils-Aime also reiterated that while competitors have made price cuts to their home systems, Nintendo has no plans to reduce the price of the market-leading console in the immediate future.

"At some point, it will be time to adjust the [price]," he said, "but we're nowhere near that point now." ...

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix will be released on 26th November via Xbox Live Arcade.

That's according to Capcom's blog, anyway, which jokes that the game "could be just a few days away" under a massive screenshot that says "Coming Nov 26 to Xbox LIVE Arcade".

SSFII Turbo HD Remix is a 1080p remake of Capcom's classic beat-'em-up featuring reworked art, online multiplayer and more fan service an air-con buffet.

There's no word on the PlayStation Network release, but that may be more to do with the rest of the blog post, which is promoting an NXE "Branded Destination Experience".

Based on our dabblings with New Xbox Experience, that means it's got a few shuffly panels detailing the game and offering easy access to trailers, picture packs, themes and other downloadables, with a spiffy image in the background.

As for its PSN release, the obvious candidate is 27th November, since PSN updates drop on Thursdays, but we'll check with Capcom. Let's hope the game doesn't fall foul of the usual European delay for localisation.

(Update: Hrm. Capcom officially said "no comment" when we asked about the PSN date. Hopefully we'll hear more soon.) ...

Sony's head of public relations for the UK, David Wilson, has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company is pleased with LittleBigPlanet's retail performance and expects the title to perform better due to "word of mouth".

The Media Molecule title went on sale on November 5, and entered the UK's All Format chart in fourth place, the same week as the company's MotorStorm: Pacific Rift came in at 29. The following week both titles dropped in the charts to 19 and 35 respectively.

"We're really pleased with the initial reaction to LittleBigPlanet - it has been our highest scoring game ever I believe with a Metacritic score of 95 and a huge list of 10/10s or 100 per cent scores," explained Wilson.

"We are also pleased with its commercial performance. In other times of the year it would be a clear number one - so you have to put the chart in context. This is an incredibly volatile time of year and the chart reflects that - November 7 saw 47 titles released on that one day alone including many big hitters with Christmas number one aspirations. Look at the chart this week - the top four are all brand new entries."

The game is a flagship title for the PlayStation 3, with Sony claiming it will help sell console hardware.

"LittleBigPlanet has also sold well given that this is a brand new IP," he said in reference to the game's first week of sales which saw it coming in below three sequel titles, Microsoft's exclusive Gears of War 2, FIFA 09 and Fallout 3.

"Our industry is littered with examples of brand new innovative titles that have been lauded by the critics but have sold dismally," Wilson added. "But Sony is delighted and honoured to be working with hugely talented developers who can create brilliantly creative original games."

"LittleBigPlanet has broken this stereotype by not only being brilliant and original but also by selling really well on a global basis. LittleBigPlanet is breaking many preconceptions. There are some games that are hardcore experiences that the kudos lies in getting it first."

Wilson further explained how the title was built to benefit from long tail sales, in particular pointing out the title's ever growing resource of user-generated content.

"LittleBigPlanet is excellent on day one but even better as time goes by," he explained. "If you bought this game on day one, you'd play your 50 plus levels on the Blu-ray and dip into the 12,000 levels created by the beta testers. If you bought the game one week later you've got over 84,000 user created levels to play with. This game gets better and better as an experience and as a value proposition."

"It is also a game that will benefit enormously from word of mouth and from people trying it out with friends or in store - it drips fun and charm in equal measure. Also the bulk of our marketing including our six figure TV advertising campaign doesn't roll out until December, so we genuinely believe that Sackboy hasn't even hit his stride yet."

The title's route to market hasn't been smooth – the game was originally delayed for release due to complications with the soundtrack.

On release, many levels which infringe copyright have been deleted, highlighting the problems of allowing users to create and share their own content in the game. ...

Netflix has pulled all content by Sony-owned Columbia Pictures from the on-demand New Xbox Experience film streaming service.

The movie rental company blames licensing problems, although other Netflix-enabled streaming platforms such as PCs and TVs are unaffected.

"As watching instantly becomes a more prominent part of the Netflix service, our goal is to have all of our streaming content licensed for all of our partner devices," Netflix told MTV Multiplayer. "We're doing well in this area, but it will take some time before we fully achieve that goal."

"Today, titles regularly come in and out of license and there is a natural ebb and flow to what we have on license at any given point in time. In the case of Xbox 360, a few hundred titles are temporarily unavailable to be streamed via the Xbox game console."

Among those "few hundred" are films such as Superbad and the entire Karate Kid trilogy.

Of course, the Netflix streaming service is only available in the US, so none of this affects us. Unfortunately, there are also no plans for a similar operation here.
